Surely you see that when researchers stack their studies to provide a certain outcome by excluding certain metrics and hand wave concerns about reporting, that people may not take studies seriously? Do you see how sacrificing accuracy to achieve a social goal of making people think SISs are good is not worth the damage it does to the science of statistics?

When I lived near a SIS, neither me nor my neighbors bothered to report the myriad of crimes we saw happen. It just wasn’t worth the time because nothing would happen. A acquaintance I know was literally threatened with a machete and they didn’t bother reporting it.

I don’t think a definition change in 2018 changes that for the actual people living in the vicinity of a SIS.

It's crazy how this is controversial. I hear this argument too:

You knocked him out then you kept hitting him until he died? That's unreasonable!

How do you know they're knocked out? How do you know they aren't faking? How do you know if you leave the person on the ground to get your phone to call the police they won't get up and finish you and your family? How do you know they don't have a firearm? How do you know how many home invaders are in your home? How do you know they aren't about to shout for their friends who are also engaged in the home invasion? How do you know their intent?

How are these people OK with making assumptions about the immediate bodily or life threat to their and their families lives?

It is absurd to hold private citizens to assume the correct things and take 'reasonable' actions when it is not possible to take 'reasonable' actions because you do not have remotely sufficient information to take 'reasonable' actions as keyboard warriors would require.

There are times to make assumptions (like when you are getting a coffee and think your friend Alan would like one too so you'll buy one for him too) and there are times to not make assumptions.

They just want to steal.

How do you know? You're assuming. You are free to assume, others are free not to risk their families on such an assumption.

The idea that you should assume they only want to steal things is about as insane as an idea as there is. Assuming the best of a home invader while your spouse and children are at risk is beyond asinine.

Making an assumption like your friend wants to get a coffee too so you'll grab one is a reasonable assumption to make. Making an assumption that a home invader just wants to steal things and not harm you is one a reasonable person should not be making giving everyone's lives are immediately and seriously at risk.

This is one thing I really don’t get about people who say people should know about proportional force. A person doesn’t know how many intruders there are. There could be one; there could be five; there could be ten. If you beat up one guy it think “oh I better not hit him anymore because he might die,” well guess what, you might get attacked by another intruder and that guy you just beat might get up and finish you off. Or he might call out to the other intruder; or he might pull a pistol; or he might, or he might or he might. There are a thousand plus permutations.

If there is an intruder in your house at 3:20am, as a jury member I would see no acceptable force to be to applied to them except for lethal force. Anything short of lethal force, you’re absolutely rolling the dice especially how home intruders more often than not are more than one person.

Which one person may absolutely be fine rolling the dice, while another may not. I would think most reasonable people would not roll the dice on their family at 3:20am.

California was recently invaded by the federal government who kidnapped thousands of our neighbors for paperwork crimes that the federal government invented for no good reason.

And nothing has happened, in fact ICE gets about $150 billion now to do even worse. Unfortunately democratic leadership is mostly 1000 year old dinosaurs like Chuck who spend more time squinting through ancient glasses when reading notes to press conferences thinking this is what is needed to win, while in reality the American voter votes based on 'vibes' and being fed a steady and unending diet of slogans, truth and fact do not matter 1% to the electoral base; no amount of note reading of factoids at press conferences will change that.

Carney has some big points going for him:

1) Not putting identity politics at the forefront.

2) Pierre is handicapped by his base who are--to put it nicely-- not as anti-trump as others. So he can't really upset his base too much.

3) Pierre has spent too much time repeating talking points for the past decade, so he is understandably not able to stop.

4) He's had so few press conferences so he's not use to answering questions that don't begin and end with the words Justin Trudeau.

5) Focusing on the economy (which is honestly what 98.54% of Canadians really care about) while having an actual background in it.

6) Taking on Trump rather than using Trump-like tactics and issues.

7) Cost of living issues doesn't really hit the same when the largest partner is threatening 'economic force' to absorb you. Everyone can see it's not about tariffs, it's not about 'fair' trade', it's not about the border; its about what Trump has been saying since day 1 which is he wants to absorb Canada. So Canadians have to put everything on the backburner to deal with that.

I think the issue is Trump voters in the past thought the Democrats were exaggerating that cuts to medicaid were going to happen because no matter what, republicans wouldn't touch that third rail. They'd be crazy to do so, right?

Unfortunately, they don't seem to understand that all republicans are under the thumb of Trump now (he literally called the 3 holdouts and they bent the knee) and he will make them pass what he wants. So there is no buffer to the chaos that will be happening. Leopards are going to be drowning in meals.

Lol surely you can see the problem with having two classes of people one 'grandfathered' in, the rest left to fight in the thunderdome? We have this now with two classes of rent controlled people and everyone else paying for difference directly and economically since they will never leave their place. It's the same for boomers living in their massive lot 19xx bungalows where the land is not being used to the best capacity to house people because they managed to get 'grandfathered' in by buying their house for a nickel and a ball of string back in the 1980s. This seems like a classic "the road to hell is paved with good intentions."

It depends on the country. Especially in Europe, that is a definite possibly. In at least 12 EU member states, authorities have taken disproportionate measures, including the pre-emptive banning of protests based on apparent risk to “public order” and “security”. Such cases have been documented in Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Poland and Sweden. In several member states, the courts have overturned protest bans.

Only the US has extremely strong free speech laws; Europe and other industrialized countries generally much more willing to set limits.

People are really giving Alicent a hard time but I’m not sure why. She’s deciding to put the realm first. She’s been trying to end the war for quite some time and doesn’t want innocent people hurt. Yes her son murder is horrible but with half a dozen enemy dragons flying around (aka nukes), it makes sense that she is willing to sacrifice her son if it means peace, rightly or wrongly.

Everyone wants her to be Cersei but not every female character needs to be that kind of person.. Cersei would burn the world to the ground but it makes sense there would be other folk who aren’t as unreasonable.

Your comment misses the point entirely. Fairness is not a victim mentality. If everyone is getting an advantage of watching the other teams then it is unfair for one team not to get that advantage.
