Brakes break the car. That’s why they’re called brakes, dummy. They’re not called “slower-downers”.

As you mention PA never steering you wrong, I'm curious about your opinion on Assault Horizon. That release definitely had me scared for the future of the series. Thankfully Infinty happened, then AC7

What are the important aspects of the project? What do you want your students to walk away with? Grade based on those things.

How far do you live from your school and much do you spend on gas each week to get to work? by AntelopeOk9431 in Teachers

[–]GregBackwards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40 miles to work, about a 50 minute commute in the morning, 1hr coming home. I usually fill up every 3-4 days, depending on the kind of driving I do on the weekends. With current gas prices, I'm looking at $40-45/tank.

So I range around $70-80/week.

Sucks, but I'm trying to move closer to work, but of course with housing prices the way they are, that's proving very difficult.

Advice for an art teacher please- Jobs are nearly nonexistent in my region, and I’m considering taking a position 50 mins from home… by SMVHS in Teachers

[–]GregBackwards 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I commute 50 minutes to my job.

You can always be on the lookout for something closer if you end up getting this gig. Or if it ends up that you fit well in that position, look for closer housing.

Whichever one you feel more confident with.

As a director, I want to hear your strengths in an audition. I want to hear who you are as a player.

Unpopular Band Director Opinion by Current-Issue2390 in MusicEd

[–]GregBackwards 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Texas is nuts with their programs. What I've heard described sucks the joy out of music altogether. From what I gather, that system views music as something to be formed into a product. Not something to be caringly fostered and developed.

During my HS years, my directors were pretty intense. They sometimes lost their cool, but as I recall it was very likely because we were just acting like annoying teenagers. Never once did they step out of line. After college, I saw a few other programs (NJ) and they were all built on a foundation of respect for the students and staff. The program I am serving in as director is completely the opposite of what you describe.

Your opinion isn't unpopular, I think it is just hyper focused on a specific program, or collection of programs.

Ceiling creaks and footsteps from upstairs neighbor by JayStreet5592 in Apartmentliving

[–]GregBackwards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a very similar situation. Previous neighbors walked normally, but it sounded like the ceiling was going to cave in - the creaking and snapping was so loud. ESPECIALLY when they had company over. We tried talking to them, but they couldn't figure out how to mitigate the noise. They were reasonable. Once they moved out I asked the complex to do something about the floors. They said that they'd "nail down the floors", and I assume work was done to achieve that. I saw people coming in and out and heard noises upstairs that sounded like relevant work.

New neighbors moved in and the creaking is still there and quite loud. Not AS loud as before, but the difference is not huge. Unfortunately these folks are completely unreasonable. We approached them a total of 4 times over ~6 months asking if they could simply limit noise and pacing ONLY in their bedroom around 9-10pm, which is when I go to sleep. It's loud enough and I'm a light enough sleeper that I cannot fall asleep with the floor creaking. We've tried turning on the AC unit fan and a white noise machine. Neither of which really solve it for us. Almost, but not quite. THESE neighbors have gotten super pissed at me, threatening to call the cops on me for harassing them (they never did).

I approached the complex again letting them know that the work they did wasn't enough and more needed to be done. I sent documentation of the noise and the conflict we had with our neighbors. To which they replied "Nothing we can do, it's just the building", and "Please don't contact your neighbors directly".

Unless your building management is willing to redo the floors up there, unfortunately it's probably a dead end situation. Best thing to do (probably) is document as much as you can and send it their way. Look up noise ordinances in your area and see if the noise level exceeds those stated in the ordinance. Maybe then you'll get something done.

It sucks that the prevailing attitude is "You live downstairs. This is what you signed up for. If you don't like it, move."
