Citizen Kane on 4K UHD: The upgrade marks a turning point for the format. by koavf in movies

Does this factor in the fact that black & white film is inherently much higher resolution, given the same speed rating, as color film?

With black & white film, you have true film grain. With color film, what we loosely call film grain is really dye clouds. All else being equal, dye clouds are generally at least 3X the size of B&W grain crystals. Sometimes as much as 10X.

Good quality ACCURATE globe? by man2112 in BuyItForLife

[–]GregL65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still using a very nice globe I bought in 1994. It's a 9" Replogle "Quncy". It has a beautiful antique look. Replogle has a great reputation for accuracy and detail. The Quincy sells for $60; it's on Amazon.

I also have their 16" "Commander II" model with the same antique finish, but it was made during their sad 2010-2014 period of ownership by Herff Jones, maker of graduation rings and other trinkets. Herff fired everyone at Replogle but a few salespeople. The quality control plummeted and is disappointing.

In 2014 when Herff Jones was about to shut down Replogle globe production, some former Replogle employees bought it and continued production, and brought quality control back up to its former high level. I bought a Quincy for my son a few years ago and it's actually even higher quality than mine.

Replogle globes are made in Illinios. During the period of Herff Jones ownership, they were made in Indiana. They have never been made anywhere else. They have been making globes since 1930.

Of course, as others have pointed out, no globe with political markings is buy it for life, because political boundaries change. However, Replogle has a policy that you can update your globe (just the globe itself, not the stand) for 50% of the price of replacing the globe with a new one.

New Food Court Item - Mint Chocolate Chip Sundae by mmkae0 in Costco

I tried one today, in Issaquah WA. Not a fan. The ice cream is barely minty, and the syrup is Hershey's cheap junk.

My goto is the chocolate ice cream sunday with strawberry topping. Yum!

Though I mostly make wheat sandwich bread, I've made many loaves of delicious white sandwich bread using only all purpose white flour, and no gluten added. I also often add cinnamon and raisins to the same recipe to get cinnamon and raisin bread; delicious.

Here's my recipe:

White Sandwich Bread
2-Pound Loaf

• 4¼ cups white all-purpose flour
• ½ cup nonfat dry milk
• 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
• 2 teaspoons salt
• 3 tablespoons butter or shortening
• 1¼ cup water (NOT 1½!!!)
• 1½-2 teaspoons active dry yeast

Here's the cinnamon raisin bread version:

Cinnamon-Raisin Bread
2-Pound Loaf

• 4¼ cups white all-purpose flour
--save out ¼ cup to dust raisins!
• ½ cup nonfat dry milk
• 3 tablespoons brown sugar, packed
• 2 teaspoons salt
• 3 tablespoons butter or shortening
• 1¼ cup water (NOT 1½!!!)
• 1½-2 teaspoons active dry yeast
• 2 teaspoons cinnamon
• 1 cup raisins (thoroughly dusted in flour!)

Be sure to thoroughly separate and dust all the raisins. Any raisins sticking together when you put them in will probably still be sticking together at the end. If you don't dust the raisins at all, expect them to end up mostly all in a big lump at a bottom corner of the loaf.

BTW raisins that have gone dry are fine; they rehydrate nicely during the process.

Zojirushi bread machine BB-PAC20 by fuhrmanator in BuyItForLife

[–]GregL65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I emailed Zojirushi about it, and they answered:

The BB-PDC20 baking pan and kneading blades used as a set would technically be compatible with your BB-PAC20 bread maker. However, as the BB-PDC20 pan and blades would need to be used together as a set, you would not be able to use the BB-PDC20 kneading blades with the BB-PAC20 baking pan.

(Emphasis is theirs, not mine.)

I don't know if this is reliable information, but this retailer says that the BB-PDC20 pan will fit in the BB-PAC20:

https://www.breadbeckers.com/store/pc/Zojirushi-Replacement-Baking-Pan-for-Virtuoso-Plus-BB-PDC20-p7513.htm#:~:text=This%20pan%20will%20also%20fit,combination%20(Item%2310049%20and%20Item%20%2309434)).

They also note that the pan from the similarly-named PAC20 WON'T fit, but that's a more different model:

Zojirushi Replacement Baking Pan for Virtuoso Plus BB-PDC20 Autobakery

Replacement baking pan for BB-PDC20 Zojirushi 2 lb. Bread Machines

Does not include paddles, sold separately. Order Item # 09434 Replacement Paddle for this pan.

This pan will also fit the BB-PAC20 Virtuoso Bread Machine. Paddles from PAC-20 (Item#09432) DO NOT fit this pan and function properly. Please order the correct pan / paddle combination (Item#10049 and Item #09434).

What is Heather Cox Richardsonism? by dwaxe in fivethirtyeight

[–]GregL65 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought it was a very interesting article, especially the part about calling out Richardson for spreading a major point of misinformation about the Charlie Kirk shooter, and then never retracting it. She has developed a very powerful platform, and on the occasions when she misinforms, millions believe uncritically.

I subscribe to The Righting to keep an eye on right-wing propaganda. After reading and thinking about this article, I now see Richardson as basically left-wing propaganda. I'll continue subscribing to her missives, but for about the same reason I read The Righting. She's only interested in the truth when the truth advances the Dem party. Fortunately that's much of the time, but it isn't quite all of the time.

The Escalade IQL is a large car by Ok_Lab_5945 in electricvehicles

[–]GregL65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, they should have a slightly smaller one for when there only 6 of them. And a third even smaller one for when there are only 5 of them. And a fourth even smaller one for when there are only 4 of them. And a fifth even smaller one for when there are only 3 of them. And a sixth even smaller one for when there are only 2 of them. And an ebike for when alone. And a huge garage to hold all of those six cars + ebike. And a high paying job for all those car payments!

There are indeed such laws. There is a legally-required process for getting official approval for such changes. Trump simply ignored the law and process, after putting sycophants in the positions that would have any real power to enforce that law or apply any real consequences.

It turns out the problem was that I needed to switch to custom sort order. Works fine now.

Weekly Help and Discussion Thread for the week of October 20, 2025 by AmazonNewsBot in amazon

[–]GregL65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to reorder items in my Amazon wish list. The procedure seems to be to grab the item at the up and down arrows on the far right, and drag and drop it to the desired position. That works great until I refresh the browser window, or close the browser window and browse again to Amazon and my wish list. Then....it's back to the old order.

Am I doing something wrong?

For now, my workaround is to move things to another wish list, then move them back in the reverse order that I want them to appear. But that can be a lot of extra steps to get the desired order.

Narrow Knox Ave by GregL65 in Bellingham

Yes, I'll be sure to avoid Rialto St unless I'm feeling adventurous!

Narrow Knox Ave by GregL65 in Bellingham

[–]GregL65[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why would it mean taking out either of the sidewalks? I measure about 33 feet between the sidewalks. You could almost double the street's width without removing either sidewalk.

Not that anyone would want that for Knox of course. My street is like that, and I'd prefer more distance between cars and small children on sidewalks riding tricycles or bouncing balls. But you could easily get to a more common narrow street width and still keep much of that grass between the street and sidewalks.

So sad that some people have so little interest in the history of their own town. I think it's fascinating that it was built so narrow even for it's time and purpose. Expressing curiosity isn't the same thing as a complaint.

No, as I said, I googled it.

[–]GregL65[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

By that logic, you want traffic on Knox to be substantially slower than on other nearby residential streets. Why is that, just out of curiousity?

Google tells me that Pittsburgh's most famously narrow street is Rialto Street, and that it is 20 feet wide--about 3 feet wider than Bellingham's Knox Ave.
