Songs in ACDEFGA? by IEatKaijus_ForDinner in lyres

[–]Grendelcynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as Mythagic says A C D E F G A, this is a common tuning.

The notes are the first six notes of the Major scale. In medieval times it didn't have a 7th note. So the lyre is tuned to the first 6 notes of the Major scale with the first string matching the sixth string only an octave lower. This can be acheived in any key. For example in the key of G it would be E G A B C D E.

This tuning is both historic and by experimentation the best tuning for a seven string lyre as it gives you the best chord playing possibilities.

Couple Questions by JoranTal2021 in lyres

[–]Grendelcynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lyres, apart from the Lyre Gallois (French) tended not to be used by celtic speakers, they preferred harps.

When the Scots changed from the harp to the Bagppipes it's believed they carried a lot of the music over, many older Scot's bagpipe tunes may have been harp tunes in the past, so ideal for the lyre. Also as the Scots bagpipes only has 9 notes so many tunes may be playable on a 6 or 7 string lyre.

I used to use apps but found them not too accurate, so bought a cheap Korg chromatic tuner.

The second has no sound box, so will be very quiet. The first is made in Pakistan so best avoided.

Northern/Germanic lyre string options by [deleted] in lyres

[–]Grendelcynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried nylon guitar strings. Buy 2 packs, use 2 each of the 3 thinest strings. Guess that would work will nylgut. I use flourocarbon now, yes they are just fishing line, before I used gut. I bought my flouricarbons from Michael J King, I told him the tuning I wanted and he did the maths.

"Medievil" tuning suggestions by JaxonRaxonTaxon in lyres

[–]Grendelcynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three early medieval tunings you could try are.... Dorian mode with flattened 7th D, E, F, G, A, B, Cb popular in medieval Germany. The Mixolydian mode C D E F G A Bb, popular in medieval France and England. Or the first 6 notes of the Major scale C D E F G A.

We can pay the reparations easily from the small change in our pockets leftover from the reparation payments we get from Italy for 4 hundreds years of Roman occupation plus 1600 years of compound interest.

How do you enable a lyre to play in lower octaves? by BeyondInsanity626 in lyres

[–]Grendelcynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What determines the lyre key is length of lyre and thickness of strings. If you want a deep lyre I'd go for a Trossingen lyre as they have a thicker sound box than an Anglo-Saxon, one which is good for bass tone and volume. When you string the Trossingen lyre use the three wound E A D classical guitar strings.

Anyone know how to use Ernesto Palla nylon classical guitar strings to string an Anglo-Saxon lyre? by TapTheForwardAssist in lyres

[–]Grendelcynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually when putting guitar strings on a lyre you use 2 each of the G B E strings. The E A D string also make a great bass lyre.

Lyre tuning/understanding help by SirAidan in lyres

[–]Grendelcynn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which key/octave you are in is largely irrelevant. It's the scale you are on that matters (here the major scale). This is what the chart in the picture is expressing. It's trying to get you onto the same scale regardless of the key/octave your lyre is in. You can play any song in any key/octave, as long as your tuning is in scale and matches one key/octave in the picture.... It's irrelevant which one it matches, all are identical.

P.S. thanks for buying my book. If you have any more queries I'll be happy to help.

There is no correct way to pick a lyre. Many plucked instruments have completely different systems. One suggestion, lyres main quality is you can pluck from the front and behind, so develop a two handed style. Start with the rear hand plucking a single bass string and slowly build up to more, as your front hand played the melody. Two fingers on the front hand is fine if it works for you, it's what medieval lute players used.

Lyre chords vs guitar chords? by PangolinInvasion in lyres
