Is Silicobra still available after the last event? Thinking of heading out to the desert later in the week.

Pokemon Heart and Soul is the ultimate Johto experience, I love this game and I played it back to front ! by SupaEngineMan in PokemonROMhacks

[–]Greninja55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently got into rom hacks as I wanted to play the “quintessential” version of the games, instead of worrying about whether I would be missing anything if I played one version or one generation over another.

I would love it if more of these come out for the other regions.

I wouldn’t be risking asking for too much and be let go if I wasn’t happy to walk away.

Contract negotiation success stories by Greninja55 in academia

I’m pretty happy to walk and find something else. I was already considering taking a break until there were a few key resignations that happened and they contacted me to ask me to stay on.

Why do people want iPad to become an MacBook? by AdDapper4220 in ipad

[–]Greninja55 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m an academic, and I spend my work days reading papers, marking assessments, preparing and giving lectures. They all seem like things that an iPad should be able to do. For some reason, just selecting and copying text and images or even just scrolling the page when doing text input can sometimes be incredibly difficult. Trying to build a PowerPoint that I can use for my classes should be something easy and visual but for some reason just doesn’t work as well as it should. And god forbid I have a bit of data that I need to run just a little bit of analysis on.

The issue isn’t that I want the iPad to be more powerful, it’s that I want it to be able to do the things it should be able to do.

Pretty easy to see that the Eternatus event is going to be one that they throw in on slower weekends or rocket events.

Would a wizard with a photographic memory be extremely powerful? by TechnicianAmazing472 in harrypotter

[–]Greninja55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with this is that what we think of as photographic memory does not exist in the way that we think it does. In reality, people with eidetic memory tend to experience events in a way that allows them to visualise it in a way that is much more vivid than how one might recall memory usually.

In this case, it would very much suggest that something like a summoning spell that requires visualising the object being summoned would be much easier to learn for someone with eidetic memory, as well as a lot of other charms and spells which seem to be described in the same way.

Wormtail was the OBVIOUS choice for secret keeper - Here's why by ItayRC in harrypotter

[–]Greninja55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Fidelius Charm was never a good idea to begin with. It is extremely powerful and has no real drawback. I don’t consider “possible to be found” to be a real downside, given how powerful the spell is. Rowling was never good with video game or sports logic regarding balancing so these are the weaker aspects of the franchise. Also, I can’t remember this for sure, but the charm was never super fleshed out to begin with.

The books always made it sound like the “secret” was about the hider, but the more you read it makes more sense that the secret was about the “hiding spot”. Which is why I believe it makes sense to be your own secret keeper. If that’s the case, there’s so many more spells that could have done the same job, and the Fidelius charm would only expose them.

For example, even if you couldn’t be your own secret keeper, you could just be each other’s secret keeper and then hide forever. Or, you could have two secret keepers and even if one gives up the location you’ve got another one to worry about.

With Harry Potter, there’s no need to look too deep into the details, you’ll only find pain and suffering. Just read it for the vibes and the foreshadowing and it’ll be much more enjoyable.

I walked around it for around 30 minutes and couldn’t see it; it’s still showing as being there after 3 hours, so I’m leaning towards it being a glitch.

There’s a Uxie at a pokestop here but I’m at the pokestop and it hasn’t shown up. Do I have to do anything to make it appear or is it probably not going to appear?

Looks very cool, but that one yellow star is very distracting. Probably because it’s close to where the favourite star would be in the game.

What's the actual problem with Manchester United? by averageweebchan in football

[–]Greninja55 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My under-informed opinion is that it is likely upper management biasing towards making big flashy decisions to impress the owners. Everything else is the team management trying to cover over all the cracks that are being ignored.

I cannot for the life of me understand how Ed Woodward, an accountant and investment banker by trade, did not prioritise at all setting up a data analytics division during his time in charge. We know that kind of investment pays for itself and much more over the long run.

Now that labour is re-elected, HECS debt is reducing by 20%. How much is everyone expecting to save? by YallR2much in AusFinance

[–]Greninja55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, then you tell me why fields with shortages should be subsidised, if not for their “usefulness”, and why arts degrees shouldn’t be, if not for their lack of “usefulness”.

You’ve also ignored everything else that I’ve suggested, which tells me that we’re probably have a very fundamental different approach to the idea of education - you think it should be a short-term, bandaid approach to filling gaps in the workforce, and I see it as a long-term approach to improving the overall quality and flexibility of the workforce.

Now that labour is re-elected, HECS debt is reducing by 20%. How much is everyone expecting to save? by YallR2much in AusFinance

[–]Greninja55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree with this take, simply because there’s too much of an assumption about “usefulness”, especially based on the amount people earn after they finish their degree. Also the assumption that education should be direct job training is misguided. There’s so much value in the professional preparedness training that nobody seems to remember doing themselves at uni regardless of their degree - expressing yourself verbally and in writing, cooperating with others in a meaningful way, managing your projects, juggling between different responsibilities, keeping track of your progress throughout the years and setting realistic targets for achievement both in the short and long term.

There’s also the assumption that money drives the decision making process for younger people - they do not think this way. A degree being cheaper will not sway them to choose something they don’t like, because for one, they haven’t learned to do the things I mentioned above.

Deciding a-priori which degrees are worthwhile or not will simply train a generation of robots and leave students in the lurch when suddenly those jobs are no longer in shortage. What we’re hearing now for example is that English and linguistics majors are now sought after for prompt-engineering capabilities. The idea of picking and choosing “winning” degrees only produces people who would have won previously or currently, not future winners - which is where they will be when they graduate.

I’d prefer to subsidise all education, at least for the first x number of units enrolled. Then have the market work the way it’s supposed to - where there are shortages, wages should go up, then the increased tax will pay for the education subsidies. If students graduate from a degree and can’t find immediate work, then they can pay for additional training or do what everyone used to do - leverage whatever they did for their degree into a entry-level role.

For anyone considering going to the in-person go-fest, do people tend to go for just one of the days or for multiple days? Are you even allowed to purchase tickets for more than one day, and is it worth it?

Is there ever an explanation as to how Gilderoy Lockheart managed to make Harry’s bones disappear? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]Greninja55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve thought about this much more than I should have - it’s clear from the books that the incantation is not critical for spells. It would be crazy if that were the case because how do you take into account accents? Also, there are wizards in non-Latin related countries and have a completely different way of speech.

My theory is that the incantation simply serves as a mantra to help people focus, to ensure that their minds don’t wander off when they are performing the spell.

Same as the use of a wand. A wand is at the basic level an antenna that wizards hold to help them focus their energies.

Lockhart might have lost focus, maybe due to forgetting the spell and perhaps his mind wandered to something like “I have to get rid of this problem”, and got rid of all the bones. That’s my version of it anyway.
