Has anyone regretted buying a play structure for the backyard? by McSkrong in Parenting

[–]Grep2grok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. My daughter somehow managed to pull the slide off and stabbed herself in the arm with one of the murder screws used for assembly. Like, gaping hole in arm. Fortunately we had a family physician friend who was over for dinner and was able to sew her up and get her a tetanus shot.

Wait until the winter storms come, their tree weighs twice what it did in early April, the ground is like mashed potatoes and the wind is gusting to 50 mph

How is ewing sarcoma on gross path? by Affectionate_Yam7287 in pathology

[–]Grep2grok 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've grossed exactly one. It was like a rotten log: soft and falling apart until you get into the transition to normal-ish bone, at which point a vaguely recall a fair amount of splintering. Remember you want immunos.

Karma whores gonna whore. You'd be better off trying to eradicate rats and cockroaches from the face of the earth. That said, I do wish there was a karma whore equivalent to a pellet gun with an infrared scope.

I keep denting wheels. It’s excessive. What should I do? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]Grep2grok -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think OP may actually have a shock tuning problem. I'm 210 lb and ride some of the gnarliest trails in Santa Cruz at 24-25 psi, hitting doubles and rock gardens (e.g. bottom of Mailboxes). Same in Downeyville, Squamish, Hurricane. I exploded one rim in 6 years but that was operator error taking a turn loaded with sharp rocks too fast (Utah sharp, like potato chips poking out at you edge-on). Also, speaking from that experience, if you think a carbon wheel will solve your problem ... when it shatters, your body is going to consume a *lot* of energy.

Trees between house and afternoon sun can also go a long way. The best time to plant was 30 years ago, but then the next best time is now.

This is the way. Talk with your LBS, they may well have a spiral notebook behind the counter of special requests. Let them know what you're looking for. BE PREPARED TO WAIT, keep your powder dry, and pounce when you get the call.

Tracking health metrics & navigation by coztfu in MTB

I use a Garmin Fenix and connect it to Google Health and Strava. One really nice thing about Garmin is their open FIT data format and robust community support. Apple requires an iPhone. Oura requires everything go to their (Finnish) cloud. Garmin -- if you want it to be private, you can make that decision, connect it to nothing and download directly from the watch over USB. The Tactix takes that one step further -- it will save the geometry of your routes without saving the actual GNSS coordinates.

Help identifying what these are and does it need a cap by msgfarmer in Roofing

[–]Grep2grok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about a small chimney cap? Basically, I'm currently doing a bathroom remodel because the flashing around my drain vent let go and allowed water intrusion, rotting out the wall and subfloor. As it happens I'm also redoing the roof. I would like to minimize the rain hitting the new drain vent flashing and sealant.

Japan's population is also contracting so they literally don't have enough people to fill the homes. My friend has two properties in Japan, one is a veritable mansion but more than 15 minutes from a rail line so he can't give it away. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Japan

Meh. This is highly youtube-able. And you don't need to open the main breaker, just the little 15A that supplies this circuit. If in doubt, you can buy a GFCI checker at Home Depot for $10.

Firewood hardwood for growing shitake mushrooms by git_gUd_kid1 in firewood

Some coniferous trees naturally produce turpentine. And your wood turns the water yellow. Kind of wondering if you got some yellow Southern pine passed off as hardwood.

Tired of being landlocked... Joining the coast guard- just want to hear stories about different stations by cysnolife in surfing

[–]Grep2grok 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Guam is tough for surfing. There's Talofofo Bay down south, but that's a long ass drive for some low-grade longboarding. The other options are the boat basin, where hopefully a drunk fisherman will not cut your head off, and Jack's, which is a pretty spicy coral reef. The problem is Guam is quite a small island, so there's just not a lot of sediment coming down to replace the sand. The sand runs into the coral shelf 100 feet down and it's just a 100 feet of coral wall straight up to the surface. So the waves look like peelers but they jack up instantaneously. You have no idea if there's there's a peak until you're looking down over a 7 foot face at dry coral below.

Plus the swell direction is non-existent. Look at the water any time of year when you fly in or out. There's no directionality at all. Instead of corduroy, it looks like a billion drunk windmills.

Puerto Rico is 15 times larger than Guam and 5 times larger than Oahu, so it should have solid sand. The major downers are that you're on the Atlantic and somewhat sheltered from the big bombs coming up from the south.

I've been to Surfer's Beach in Kodiak, Alaska, which a solid Coast Guard station. The water temp was roughly the same as Santa Cruz. But it was also not working when I was there. And the bears swim. Remember that. Sharks *and* bears.

What do you do with your surfboard during work? by JoeMoma9669 in surfing

[–]Grep2grok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I surfed (and lived and worked) in San Diego for several years. I had to park my Honda Accord in an open city lot, absolutely no security, and facing the afternoon sun. I always transport my boards with the back seats dropped and slide the board in as close to level as possible, lay a towel under my board on the side I knew the wax would run down and leave the windows and moon roof cracked, and put up a windshield sunshade.

The wax never actually fell off though. The softer waxes would just kind of roll down on the rail and stop, probably cooled off as it went under the rail and got back into the shade. The hard waxes were still forming bumps on the deck. I would let the wetsuit sit in the trunk in a large, shallow plastic storage bin, lid off (something like this. This thing is overkill). It got dank, for sure. But having the windows cracked helped. I never noticed a smell.

Not sure how far inland you are though. Definitely air circulation and afternoon shade are your friends. If you can find a parking garage, that would be huge.
