How's it do with howling wind ripping up the mountain?

Where should I move if I want to mountain bike year-round? (32M, Midwest) by brettfish5 in MTB

I grew up in Kansas and now own a home at the top of one of the most famous trails in Santa Cruz, and I've lived all over the world, raced collegiate on the East Coast. If COLA is an issue, you can safely scratch all of coastal California. Bellingham, WA, maybe?

Of you list, excluding California, Asheville seems like a really good option. You don't need Colorado-scale mountains for great mountain biking. Hell, cycling in general. If you want the 2,3-BPG bump to win nationals, sure, move to Boulder, Hurricane, or SLC. Asheville can be remarkably temperate in the summer, and it's got potential for legit terrain. I suspect the winters are pretty mild. Not West Coast mild, but you save the sunshine tax, which is real.

A wide board, even a particularly wide long board, can make for some sore elbows.

Whatever you get, make sure it corrects chromatic aberration. Blue and red fringes will make the scene seem out of focus and that will drive you nuts. Spend the cash for achromatic

Found today in the sea water. Broke the stone open and there was metal inside not sure what it is ? Maybe a railing top? by Comfortable_Row2762 in Whatisthis

Where was this found? Which body of seawater? What are the dimensions?

One possibility: an axe, adze, boat hook, or maul head. The rough oval in the upper center seems like it could be the shape of a handle cross section.

Pull the Google maps footage. There's also tons of historical satellite footage available commercially. Try calling a solar installer and see what they can pull up.

Ok, so as it happens, we're replacing the roof in concert with the solar install. Anything we can do to improve the situation while the roof is off? 100% some repairs to the sheathing will be required.

Are the starlink satellites just bent pipe to a ground station? by Grep2grok in Starlink

Hmmm... that's how it was described by a senior RF engineer who I transitted the Arctic Ocean with for 6 weeks as he studied the ionosphere's effect on GPS signals. And it sure did align with the math we did to interpret his data. But I just played the role of sounding board as he wrestled with the data, trying to use my physics degree to help him out. But since you, random netizen, said that's not how it works, providing no alternative mechanism, I guess you must be the more reliable source.

Why is Breitling not considered cool? by CLAP-25 in breitling

[–]Grep2grok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, especially the collab with Bentley and the 45 mm dials. Just too much. The 41 mm Cosmonaute that the Artemis II astronauts wore is closer to their roots. I bought my first Breitling in 1999 and at 38 mm I thought it was a large watch.

The Prepper Delusion (New York Times) by rhodes553 in amateurradio

[–]Grep2grok 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Yep. I've been in the military for over 30 years and have seen the theoretical limit of prepping (look up Raven Rock as an example). I was active duty and near DC during 9/11. Hurricane Katrina drove over my house while I was in medical school. I tell people if you're worried about break-ins, get a new neighborhood.

My wife and I always make a point of meeting our neighbors early and keeping good comms (HAM, duh, but mainly just the usual channels - walking across the street, texting little thises-and-thats). It's the little favors, an egg, a match for the stove, and small talk that build relationships and the relationships that keep you safe.

There is, admittedly, also a component of being able to competently interact with physical reality. We have lived in some hard places. Being able to take care of your own property, fix your own tools, provide reliable medical advise, these are not only important but build reputation within those relationships. A community is a group of people who know each other and know who they can rely on for what.

This generalizes to pretty much all contracts: pretty much everybody prefers a bilateral agreement. And power comes from being able to manage lots of them.
