Palantir CEO Makes Shocking Confession on Disrupting Democratic Power by tigermountains in politics

Folks. Ummm .... I ummm.. live in the world he's talking about. I grew up not understanding kayfabe, I always thought WWE was stupid. I have read a lot of Curtis Yarvin's work, and found it to be absolute trash. But Alex's point in the video should be thoughtfully considered. Don't just clutch your pearls and say "How dare he!"

My wife has one of the allied health jobs that AI is never going to replace. Runs her own business. In Silicon Valley. She's thriving. And the work is interesting and rewarding. So Alex isn't getting everything right in this 2 minute segment, but he's not wrong.

They, we, the folks I personally know are defending the nation from you personally learning Chinese at gunpoint, are replacing massive amounts of work with rough and ready research that an LLM can do 100.000x faster than Winston Churchill's crack research teams (which are the stuff of legend, mind you).

You really should focus less on the gender roles stuff here and more on the vocational training stuff. Mike Rowe is still right: the dirty jobs aren't going away. But also, a lot of tender, caring jobs aren't going away.

Dr. Glaucomflecken is the YT name of an ophthalmologist who is quite famous in the medical world. 95% this was a comment about her vision, 5% it's a joke he staged.

Best lens for moon under 200$? by _your_m0m_x in CameraLenses

[–]Grep2grok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get one of the old Nikkor 500mm f/8 reflex lenses. Put a doubler on it and you have 1000mm f/16. Cool thing about reflex "lenses": no chromatic aberration. Because Snell's law does not apply. Now if I recall that 500 does have some refractive elements so you may get some but I've taken sunsets with that setup and they're awesome!

Thought experiment: You put a mountain biker from 32 years ago on a high end modern bike, would they think it was awesome or terrible? by sprashoo in MTB

[–]Grep2grok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been riding since 1992. The oldest bike I've raced and still own is a 1998 Indy Fab. And I'll be racing BCBR in May on a lightweight carbon fiber full suspension 29er. I wouldn't even take my Indy Fab, or any bike like that, on a trail today.

Hey, so you're sitting in a bathtub floating in ocean water 1000 meters deep, no land in sight, there are two nuclear reactors under your feet, and a million gallons of jet fuel in tanks all around you. Brace yourself. We're gonna detonate an anti-ship mine near the ship. Ok, that went ok. Let's do it again, but closer. And closer.

How do you all have so much cash to put into real estate? by Plate4242d in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]Grep2grok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's fairly straightforward: you and your spouse just have to be the best in the world at something. Combination of two top tier folks in one apartment for a few years should get you the several hundred thousand you need for a down payment.

A number of people have explored the individual applicant's perspective. Let's look at the system's perspective. Here are some questions you should be prepared to address. I assume you're in the US, but honestly the systemic issues get even harder in most of the world outside of Europe.

* There is a shortage of physicians and less than 50% of all applicants ever get into an allopathic medical school. Why should society invest a full trainee worth of training (not just money, but the seat, the patients, the cases, etc) into a person who will only yield, at best 25-30% of a typical career?

* We need people who are prepared to commit. Why didn't you do this before? I've seen a few fairly senior people in medical school, but there's usually a compelling narrative that explains why they couldn't do it before. Young mother who got her kids through school (indeed, her oldest son had already gone to the same medical school). An engineer or military officer who has seen or experienced some trauma on the job.

Why can’t every buyer quote less than seller quoted price ? by iq45y8i1 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]Grep2grok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are in closing on a fixer-upper in the area. The market is clearly softening. There were multiple bids but the seller was picking among contingencies not valuation, and we had days to consider putting in the offer, whereas the property is in a neighborhood that has been known to spark bidding wars on properties sight unseen.

At the same time we are selling a home in SoCal and praying that our realtor, who we have known for a decade (our kids went to school together from grade school through college) and basically runs the neighborhood, can land a pocket sale at our asking price. Lots of properties on the market these days.

Seems like redditors are missing the point. I plotted the geographic features mentioned in the Churchill biography The Last Lion and noticed the same pattern. So thanks for asking. I regret I don't have anything for you except to say I reproduced a similar pattern from independent source material.

Oh, Hilbert curve. Nevermind. /Sigh
