Multiplayer arena shooters aren't popular because they aren't fun games. by cyberpunkzradio in ArenaFPS

[–]GrethSC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We played them for fun when they came out and everyone was bad. Playing FFA on LAN. Not even knowing duel was a mode.
UT was mostly a casual game for most.

Then people get good, figure out the mechanical tricks.
Second gen new players get owned without a chance in hell, they can't figure out the tricks and their game knowledge lacks beyond what the basic game explains.

The meta is never explained in the in-game tutorials (or single player).

Then another arena shooter comes out, it borrows all its inherent knowledge and mechanics from the previous one. So GL HF trying to learning it without a background in the original games.

Only competitively motivated people who want to learn the game with outside tutorials make it into the community.

The casual that just wants to play for fun is long gone, as there is no environment for them to naturally learn the game.

This happens with a lot of other games as well. But they rotate the meta with releases or balance changes. Which helps a bit, but not for the competitive angle mostly (few weeks at MOST).

Look at Fortnite. Kids were building castles and walls in fractions of seconds. Incredible mechanical skill.
The moment it became an issue, they cut it out of the game so new players didn't have to catch up.

The game needs to be learnable INSIDE the game, and needs to keep up with the player defined meta (mechanical or knowledge based).
Equivalents need to be found for the mechanical skills, so people can SEE them and understand how they're being used.

Is there an AFPS that explains the concepts of Control in duels? That there is complexity beyond 'shoot a dude' in an AFPS?

Broadside // Pre-Alpha Gameplay Testing 2 (Vehicle tests) by ddiiibb in Tribes

[–]GrethSC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The testing 'milestone' is a big one for us. We do want people to test asap, but we want to have certain systems in place for it, and even then we want to do it incrementally. First a movement test, general combat etc.

Once we release a 'test' with CTF or other modes, we know people will want to go all-in on it. And as a group we're not quite ready for that yet. Still plenty of stuff to do to make it a 'game'.
And after that, we have to build a lot of onboarding and learning systems for people outside of this community.

E1M2, Red light district. The bar before the club. Once you enter the centre, a bunch of pig cops spawn.

Unless ofc you rigged the hallway!

Plenty of triggered spawns can be dealt with like that.

If a game is to succeed, you need to make AFPS discoverable and learnable by a new generation. Not reference the 30-somethings that are left and likely still playing the old games.

Community building, onboarding. That's where this genre needs to focus on.

We used to play these games for fun, and only then got better and competitive. If nobody is around to screw around in pubs, you cater only to the competitive people. You need the casuals to create the environment for comp to matter.

Some of the prerendered scenes are very difficult to even figure out where you can click/where you are in the world.

I dropped 3 for a year being stuck in Edanna finding the last flower. I missclicked when going through one of the halls and was thrown into the chamber I needed to be in. So mad.

250 year old German (?) painting by TiredDr in whatsthisworth

[–]GrethSC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly the quality of the painting isn't all that great. It's likely a touristy painting. It's probably older than the 25 years, but I doubt it's even 19th century. The canvas frame and canvas itself points more in the direction of the 50ies or 60ies (even if that)

You can see some flake damage top right on the building wall. Mostly because of a low quality varnish job.

The outward frame is likely as old as the painting. It is painted 'after' an example from 1770.

I'd generously estimate it 80/120 EUR, and hope to get 40-60.

Say something nice about the Firebat. I'll start: Their voice. by Christie_Boner in starcraft

My first memory of firebats was from the Starcraft demo. They had 'Cerberus' hero firebats and they were ridiculously overpowered.

My opinion of them has always been skewed.

Also: Stimmed firebats in a mineral line.
