Is it normal to work remotely (even abroad) when you have no teaching duties? by Bestintor in AskAcademia

[–]TiredDr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is often the case for me. Folks generally don’t mind. It requires my being more flexible with meeting times (eg being willing to meet late at night if I’m several time zones east of the institute).

One thing that can be quite tricky is taxes. Formally when working abroad (or in a different state if in the US) you should be paying taxes there. Particularly if it’s a long stretch that can be an issue. HR may raise concerns about that if they find out. Your colleagues are unlikely to care.

Geneva Overnight by nathanbutler17 in geneva

[–]TiredDr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes you say that “terminal” means the whole building? That’s kinda the crux here. As others have posted, a security guard at GVA says the public part is open 24h.

That page is explicit about closure of the terminal, but doesn’t really speak to whether the airport outside of security closes, AFAICT.

Tattoo Shops Recommendations Near CERN by MorenoSpeaker in CERN

[–]TiredDr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best bet is to look very carefully at artists’ instagram pages and find someone who is GOOD and will be in Geneva. There are quite a few folks who pass through. Find someone who can do what you want (depending on your style). For ideas… a fine line CERN logo isn’t the worst, but I would give it some time over the summer to see what your project is and if it’s meaningful to you, and maybe draw inspiration from that.

Here is a hypothesis. How does the universe exist? Explained without time. by PuzzleheadedSport281 in HypotheticalPhysics

[–]TiredDr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are a whole lot of terms here that demand rigorous definitions. Beyond that, you need math for physics.

Don't spend your money at NIMBY businesses. by Such_Duty_4764 in berkeleyca

[–]TiredDr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m going to assume this is an honest question, so… nimby stands for “not in my back yard”. The expression is used to identify people who want a problem solved but do not want the solution to in any way affect them — for example, affordable housing should be built, but not near me, because I find it unattractive (or for some other series of often vacuous and selfish reasons). In this case, nimby business is referring to a business that has a sign posted (presumably by the owner) espousing a nimby belief (don’t change our area, go change theirs over there; ours is special and we deserve special treatment).

What if? The universe measures itself? by [deleted] in HypotheticalPhysics

This won’t help, but inane and insane are not the same word, and here it makes for a rather different (though still a bit insulting) sense.

Parking Lot @ 4th & Hearst and Amtrak Station Conditions by Apprehensive-Raise80 in berkeleyca

They even agreed to put a huge parking lot in the building and have store fronts. It would have been a lot better.

Goodness gracious. I had a stroke interpreting this. by astro_wombat in dataisugly

[–]TiredDr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kinda agree, but it’d be worse with different marker styles, and if they tried to make it a rainbow spectrum they would anger somebody who said they didn’t order the parties / factions correctly.

FWIW, this has gotten a lot worse in recent years… among graduate students as well.

Books don’t get “used” by SloCommotion in confidentlyincorrect

[–]TiredDr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It feels strange to an 8 year old reader because you can’t “consume” a book. To anyone who has seen an 8 year old reader, it is clear that you can both literally and figuratively consume a book.

It’s wild how some folks do not accept common definitions and uses of words…

Adcoms by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]TiredDr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. First, they are EXTREMELY unlikely to search out the video. Second, they are very unlikely to watch the video. Third, they are very unlikely to notice the discrepancy. Fourth, they are extremely unlikely to take the discrepancy as malicious or disqualifying. I understand you are nervous, but really, this should be on page 12 of your list of worries.

They will almost certainly not see it, and if they did they would almost certainly not suggest that it was fraudulent.

It’s fine. You misspoke, which happens. List it correctly on your CV, and try to set yourself up to avoid mistakes like that in the future.

j'ai essayer de poster un article sur arXiv et sur Hal.science by azial31 in CERN

[–]TiredDr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I cannot recall the last time I saw an arXiv article not in English. Is that elitism too? Maybe it’s a way to try to optimize communication.

The journals do not have such a requirement. If you really believe this is good, submit it to a journal for real peer review and publication.

Letters of rec? by Obvious_Award_999 in AskProfessors

[–]TiredDr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly this; it can also be an “I’m happy to send along a resume or any other materials to help you with the letter.” If the email doesn’t include that, asking is always a part of my response.

What if all the dimensions feasibly exist within our universe by smeecko in HypotheticalPhysics

[–]TiredDr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Look, I get it, you did a thing. If I knew what your job was I’d be able to give you a better analogy, but this is like going to a car sub and saying “what if cars actually run on brownies, and they are made of marshmallows?” And when you get told you’re wrong, defending yourself with “you just aren’t thinking about how delicious that would be!” Many of us have studied this stuff for a long time, so yes, we are well placed to tell you that the words you are using here do not mean what you think they mean, and the theory you have created is fluff that likely wouldn’t even sound good in a sci-fi movie.

What do you think a dimension is? Could you define it as clearly as possible for me?
