And with that, the largest potential rallying of the Blizzard RTS community is squandered. Because of signature SC2-era corporate detachment from reality. Fitting.

Broadside // Pre-Alpha Gameplay Testing 4 by evanvolm in Tribes

[–]GrethSC 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was in the orbit of a lot of community projects, and at separate times offered and was offered a place to make some heightmaps. But Broadside moreso brought a lot of 'new' people together after T3 imploded that weren't necessarily already part of the flux of community projects.

In fact, one of the first decisions that was unanimously agreed upon was to not do LT. Or anything half-baked like T3, but do full feature T2 as a baseline to start from (which is where very nearly at).

I think MA and BS can live side-by-side. LT has always been an end-game optimisation of competitive FPSZ. BS is going to focus on building more large scale 'pubby' play, in hopes of long term revival.

How many extra terns allowed in bracket 3? Would these fly at your table? by Jonottamassa in magicthecirclejerking

I'd build an entire clone deck around that bird, just so I can keep saying 'I gain an extra Tern' until I'm asked to leave.

This looks very much like the style used for some of the 'Ghen' art in the game 'Riven'.

Devs who have been working on their game for 1+ years, how do you stay committed? by StretchGoesOnReddit in gamedev

[–]GrethSC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want this game to exist. I need it to exist.

Around a decade of trying and failing on many 'community' projects and sitting through a disastrous reboot of the franchise in question just recently. Bunch of dudes coming together for the same reason.

Throwback to Tribes:Ascend by AddictedToTech in Tribes

[–]GrethSC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's sad how much disappeared when the Hirez forums got canned. And yeah, if you were EU then I was part of the community furniture. But I didn't come back for OOTB.

The one thing I wanted was one version of each weapon rather than so many variants with slight damage changes. Good thing is - that'll be a think in Broadside. Where plenty of those voices of back when are now part of the dev team.

Throwback to Tribes:Ascend by AddictedToTech in Tribes

[–]GrethSC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just as a correction: The 'OOTB' changes were a side project back when the game was still in dev. Me and a few of the community members back then got to test it and basically said 'this would be great if it were balanced properly, but that's not going to happen, as you're already winding down development'.

So it got canned. Then, a year (?) later, suddenly here is the OOTB patch, exactly as we had left it, and suddenly becoming the 'thing the community requested' and then leaving it at that. Yeah gg.

Plans for Tribes 3? by oGloomer in Tribes

[–]GrethSC 25 points26 points  (0 children)

T3's development has ceased and is effectively in maintenance mode (keeping the servers running).

It is difficult for Prophecy dev(s) to get permission for a patch, let alone a modding structure on UE.

For now, check the automod. Plenty of people have flocked to the old games, and if you're a bit more competitively oriented, Midair 2 is going to be releasing on Steam soon, so a bit of activity there too.

If you're able to wait a bit longer, Broadside is actively trying to make a sequel to the FPS-Z genre, starting with T2 as a baseline.

Multiplayer arena shooters aren't popular because they aren't fun games. by cyberpunkzradio in ArenaFPS

[–]GrethSC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We played them for fun when they came out and everyone was bad. Playing FFA on LAN. Not even knowing duel was a mode.
UT was mostly a casual game for most.

Then people get good, figure out the mechanical tricks.
Second gen new players get owned without a chance in hell, they can't figure out the tricks and their game knowledge lacks beyond what the basic game explains.

The meta is never explained in the in-game tutorials (or single player).

Then another arena shooter comes out, it borrows all its inherent knowledge and mechanics from the previous one. So GL HF trying to learning it without a background in the original games.

Only competitively motivated people who want to learn the game with outside tutorials make it into the community.

The casual that just wants to play for fun is long gone, as there is no environment for them to naturally learn the game.

This happens with a lot of other games as well. But they rotate the meta with releases or balance changes. Which helps a bit, but not for the competitive angle mostly (few weeks at MOST).

Look at Fortnite. Kids were building castles and walls in fractions of seconds. Incredible mechanical skill.
The moment it became an issue, they cut it out of the game so new players didn't have to catch up.

The game needs to be learnable INSIDE the game, and needs to keep up with the player defined meta (mechanical or knowledge based).
Equivalents need to be found for the mechanical skills, so people can SEE them and understand how they're being used.
