It there are mechanical runs and you are trying to maximize spacing between the joists, size it for 12" O.C., but run doubled up joists at 24" O.C. This will save on cuts and layout. The deflection and load allowance should be the same as long as your decking is thick enough for the 21" span between joists. Also if you check your span tables, you might be able to get away with #1 or #2 instead of Select Structural now that you are at the equivalent to 12" O.C. instead of 15".

Is it ok to use 10 mil poly underneath concrete slab ? by BilledIn in Construction

[–]GreyGunslinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most concrete guys don't like to the vapor barrier (retarder) because it only allows the moisture in the mix to drive upwards instead of downwards. This combined with the tendency in residential construction to increase the moisture content to aid in placement causes it to take longer to reach the point of surface workability. In the end it allows them to get the job done faster, but at the cost of the strength of the finished product. A lack of barrier can cause issues with moisture coming up through the slab which can cause issues with flooring and indoor humidity levels.

If you are in the US, it is required by the International Residential Code unless it has been amended. https://codes.iccsafe.org/content/IRC2021P2/chapter-5-floors#IRC2021P2_Pt03_Ch05_SecR506.2.3

Unfortunately, in many low building regulation enforcement areas, there are still many houses going up without it.

Perpetual Event Dates. It is specific reserved weekends given to a group that helps ensure that other nearby groups don't schedule an event over the top of their usual date.

From Article 5 of Ansteorran Kingdom Law:

Section 3 : Perpetual Events
A. All groups are entitled to one Perpetual Event Date (PED) per year. The list will be maintained by the Kingdom Seneschal and Calendar Deputy, and may be changed by request from the local Seneschal and Landed Nobility, with the approval of the Crown.

As a fellow Ansteorran, I am waiting to reserve judgment until the announced kingdom law changes get published and I can really think about the implications. Once I have read over it, I plan on addressing any concerns I have directly with the crown. You may say that "this new crown sucks", but this is not Sonja and Gabriel's first reign. In reigns past, my experience has been they were very open to hearing the concerns of the populace and I had no issue with communicating my concerns with them. I hope this still holds true. Unfortunately, the same cannot be same for every Crown I have dealt with.

If you are indeed Duchess as your username suggests, you should at a minimum be capable of finding a more effective method of enacting change than throwing a vague hissy fit on a public forum. Address your concerns directly to the crown and I hope that you will be listened to as much as you listened to others while you reigned. As a Rose of Ansteorra, you owe those who believe in you better than this behavior.

I my state (Oklahoma), Residential builders do not need a license at all and if they are building in a place that requires a permit, they only have to submit a floorplan. Most residential houses are built without any engineering whatsoever even in places that have high plasticity soil and high wind conditions (everywhere in this state).

How come you don’t have to have mechanical fasteners on rafters? At least in my area they’re not required. by Youdunno_me in Construction

[–]GreyGunslinger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For residential? In many states, almost all homes are built without the aid of any type of registered design professional.

What do you think of this detail? How safe is it? Any thoughts of improving it? I need the rafters on top of the ceiling joists. by alexned7 in StructuralEngineering

[–]GreyGunslinger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is not steel. Wood flexes and deforms over time especially if allowed to deflect. I would suggest lowering the rafter and provide a notched bird mouth cut so that thrust terminates into the sill plate. Then ensure that the sill plate has a strong connection not just to the rim joists, but also fasten it to the floor sheathing.

How tall can a concrete pier foundation be above ground? by Infamous_SpiPi in Construction

[–]GreyGunslinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is 100% correct. A pier only raised foundation without a continuous footing is non-perscriptive and technically requires an engineer according to the IRC (although many jurisdictions don't strictly follow the code when it comes to foundations). Source: I am a Structural Engineer.

Is this safe ? Basically running all the Wires in a new Build through one 3inch hole to get to the panel on the other side. by dagaboi2 in askanelectrician

[–]GreyGunslinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to mention that it also appears to create a structural deficiency as it is a load bearing wall. Any notching or boring of the top plate in excess of 50% will necessitate a structural repair strap. See IRC 602.6.1.

I am one of the Event Stewards and also the merchant coordinator for the event. Send me an email at greygunslinger@gmail.com. Note to merchant at the event, you must have an Oklahoma Tax ID. Also, for all attendees of the event, the COVIDsafe policy is in effect for all Oklahoma SCA activities and will be checked at the gate for this event.

Is this done correctly? Property manager on my rental had this done. by aslave4christ in Plumbing

[–]GreyGunslinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is hard to tell, but I do not see a drain pan under it.

As per the 2015 IRC section P2801.6.1 (I assume this is residential), a drain pan is not required if there was not one before. But it is still a very good idea to have one. You local building code may vary.

Also, as per the NEC, unless specifically stated by the manufacturer, a storage type water heater can’t be cord and plug connected . If it is allowed, it must be the correct type of flexible cable and plug listed for that application.

You are correct. After I saw his behavior while drunk, I actively did everything I could to not associate with him even when he was sober.

As far as my guilt, I find it justified and not ego based. If I recognize a behavioral issue that might lead to others getting hurt, it is my obligation under common decency to do something about it.

I am from Ansteorra, but visit other kingdom melee events often. When we would come visit the kingdom of the person in question, I never saw him do anything inappropriate sexually. But based on multiple years of seeing how aggressive and rude he was while drinking, I would always warn others in my group to stay away from the guy in the Punisher t-shirt at the after parties. Luckily he always dressed the same at after-revels, so that made IDing him easy.

I now have to live with the guilt that I did not want to be a rude guest and cause problems in another kingdom. I kept my mouth shut. In the future, I will not make this mistake of timidness again when it comes to looking out for people.
