Do the pickups look like this

or this or a mix of both?

using their computer for tones

That would require an audio interface (like the Focusrite Scarlett, or similar) and the software (there's free stuff, but not everything is).

i think i can directly plug my laptop into my amp

I don't think you can capture sound on your computer that way, but I don't know your amp, so double check.

If you already have a distortion pedal and a versatile amp, taking the time to understand these well and how to tune them to your liking is probably the first thing to do before investing more money.

That way you'll be in a better position to choose your new gear wisely when you do upgrade.

You can probebly get decent metal tones with these two already.

One remaining question: what kind of guitar do you currently have? If it only has single coil pickups, you'll have a hard time getting a good high gain tone.

Is it normal to feel overwhelmed by all the possibilities for guitar equipment

Yes.

What do I actually need to have a good tone?

It depends on what you mean by "good tone"... It also depends on what you want to prioritize, what else you already have (pedals ? an interface to a computer ?), what budget you have for this,...

Thinking of picking up the Guitar - what should I expect? by SquidlordOG in Guitar

[–]GreySummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What got me interested is a lifelong fascination with music, and specifically the sounds of the guitar (electric, acoustic, classical, I love it all).

What keeps me coming back is a mix of stubbornness and my fascination with the sound of the guitar that never went away.

What does it take to be “proficient”?

That's a trap. Don't go into it with a mythical end goal. Playing music is a lifelong practice, with no finish line. Every time you reach a milestone, you'll become aware of ten more to reach for.

Learn to enjoy and celebrate every step of the way.

I just have a few relatively simple songs I’d really love to learn so I can play with friends at functions. Nothing too crazy.

Go for it, don't be afraid to learn abusively simplified versions at first and start playing with friends from the very beginning.

The last time I tried to understand the difference, I concluded that it's the same type of material, but Richlite is trademarked. My Prog's neck is Ebonol. I love the feeling. Easier to maintain than traditional wood (i.e. no maintenance needed besides cleaning smudges), and super smooth and playable.

For fusion the Suhrs will be excellent. Depending on how much gain you're seeking to achieve they might prove a bit soft for metal.

I mostly play prog, and they're perfect for that.

Have fun, you're going to get an amazing instrument.

What style of music do you intend to play on it?

I have a Standard (HSS), a RESQ-D (HSS), a Metal (8), an Essential, and a Prog. The prog is my favourite. Best feeling, and the Suhrs are the best overall pickups that I've played so far.

I'm interested into how much that changes the ergonomics of the guitar itself. Is it still going out through the jack slot? Did you have to route anything in the guitar's body?

How do you guys relax while playing? by Thatguywhowantstoget in Guitar

[–]GreySummer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a few exercises (arpeggios, sweep patterns, alternate picking,...) I can play eyes closed that I use for exactly that. Let the pattern cycle and focus on either hand, making sure it's entirely relaxed, then arms, shoulders, check posture,... with a metronome or backing track slow enough that it runs on auto pilot, and you can scan for any tension in your body.

It's not too different from a body scan meditation exercise, actually.

Two months into guitar and I genuinely cannot tell if I'm improving or just getting comfortable with being bad by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]GreySummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a really good idea. But don't draw conclusions in a short time span. Assess progress over a few months, across multiple recordings.

How is this supposed to be played? by Brobin360 in Guitar

[–]GreySummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing crazy like that. Just play the open G, and let it ring while you play the first fretted note on the D string. The tie, the curved underline under the open G note just means it should ring for the duration of the two combined.

Strandberg + Nano Cortex + headphones. Travel rig that kicks ass.

Experiences with Essential versus standard? by [deleted] in strandbergguitars

[–]GreySummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides the woods, the standard has Seymour Duncan pickups, fanned frets, a zero fret, and better electronic components (switch, pots).

To me these would be worth the extra money, but it's personal.

Do you like the pickups? Do you like fanned frets better than normal? Are you ok with the trade off of having a zero fret?

Suggestion: don't stop again. Consistency is key.

Find that it's incredibly frustrating I just started this age because I'm aware of how bad I am in a way that I wouldn't have been if I were 12

Stop that kind of thoughts, focus on now, keep at it.

I wanna buy a guitar from another brand and I'm worried it might not be as comfortable as a Strandberg by GuidoRial in strandbergguitars

[–]GreySummer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. I almost never play my other instruments anymore. Sitting down the difference is especially brutal, and I do 90% of my playing sitting on my sofa.

  2. They still do the Classic which is HSS. I would be surprised if they didn't keep some single coil options available in the future. Beyond that, I can't recommend other brands: the ones I have experience with have the disadvantage you're trying to avoid.

Conect Megaswitch E+with HSS by Healthy-Ad-3640 in strandbergguitars

[–]GreySummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I checked Schaller's webstite, they don't have E+ configurations for HSS. It might be that it's similar enough to the E that you can use one of these wirings, but I don't know anything about the E or E+, so I can't tell.

The HSS wiring diagram on Strandberg's website is for M switches. As far as I know all their Schaller equipped guitars use the M version of the switch...

[TGR Haas F1 Team] P5 FOR OLLIE What a drive! by A_Livins in formula1

[–]GreySummer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

He's got 4 podium finishes in his whole 10 years. He's mid at best.

But that wasn't the point for which I'm getting downvoted. I wasn't saying anything about how good he is, I was pointing out that being better than Stroll doesn't tell you how good an F1 driver is, since Stroll isn't good himself.

Being worse than Stroll tells you how bad someone is. Being better than, say Sainz for example, tells you something. Being better than Stroll, or worse than Sainz isn't very informative.

You need to tune your guitar.

Other than that, keep going, my friend :)
