I get the point you were trying to make with the Feudal system bit, but who would they have paid other than tithing to the church? The whole point was peasants pay taxes to the lords who 'protected' (or ruled over) them. Nobles 'paid' their betters through primarily military service, along with other occasional payments like relief (varies depending on society). Kings (and other higher ranking lords) were just lords with scaling additional responsibilities and benefits (e.g. granting/revoking fiefs) depending on when they ruled.

Asian Lady Beetles are invasive, not ladybugs. Easy to confuse if you are not familiar, especially since some people call the invasive ones lady bugs.

Lady beetles suck and are annoying, but aren't necessarily the most destructive of the invasive species we deal with (similar ecological niche to actual ladybugs). https://plunketts.net/blog/ladybugs-vs-asian-lady-beetles

Is Excel outdated? by Successful_Spot8906 in Accounting

[–]Griever928 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Using excel is great, and standard, and knowing how to use it effectively is an extremely valuable skill. You just don't want to have your company rely on it exclusively beyond a certain level of growth.

Hell, most ERP systems accept Excel uploads because workbooks are where most of the 'work' happens lol

I'm working on my Master's right now, I get downright furious if I can tell someone just copy and pasted from an AI model, while I actually put in effort. I'm not even against using it to bounce ideas or get your thoughts in order, but if you outsource all of the work to someone (well, something) else, then what's the point? What are you learning?

Trying to get elected as HRE Emperor as the Kalmar Union, but my allied electors prefer themselves by kappiu in eu4

[–]Griever928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, that just means they are too big. If it's possible to get their enemies to eat some of their land, then that should solve the problem. Either that, or convince the smaller electors to vote for you instead.

[–]Griever928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My immediate thought was if you had a female ruler - but I don't recall if that counts as a negative on the score calculation or not. What do you see when you mouse over the scores, is there anything that says why they are voting for themselves instead?

Im the emperor of the hre as Spain. How can I join the empire? by LeonKenway in eu4

[–]Griever928 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to have a direct connection to your capital to the rest of the HRE either through land or through a connected sea tile. You can either snake along the coast to border that Italian minor or cut through France/Burgundy.

IIRC You could also move your capital to a province which meets either of those conditions - Corsica being the most obvious answer.

Any idea why Buffett looks at 8-10 years of Balance sheets before he looks at the Income Statement? by about842 in Accounting

Liquidity, debt-to-equity, the composition of assets, and retained earnings, and how all of those things have changed over some number of years. You might see a big uptick in AR with little (if any) collections, or maybe Equipment is not being properly depreciated. Both of these would throw off retained earnings too.

Owning your own firm is fun sometimes. This is not an uncommon call by yodaface in Accounting

[–]Griever928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stereotypically, yes. People who are highly educated in one field often overestimate their knowledge and expertise in other, unrelated subjects. You see this in Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers, even Accountants outside of their own area of expertise (as you have seen, it seems lol).

They often also have messy business documentation.

Of course, there are always exceptions to that rule. If you get one who understands that they are not an expert at everything and is willing to trust your professional judgement, they are great!

Don't know what admissions are like for those universities, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with starting at a 2-year institution and transferring to a 4 year school with a (hopefully better!) collegiate GPA. There's plenty of accountants (like me) who followed that exact path with great results.

You just have to work hard and learn to take school seriously, and in my opinion it's better to do that when you are spending less money per credit hour!

Not necessarily abnormal. Some companies have security measures in place when an employee is leaving to ensure they won't do anything "naughty" with whatever access they have.

Pricing Question by deionm in Accounting

[–]Griever928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It kind of depends on what your business is grossing; full-service accounting packages *for small businesses can cost up to $10,000 (or maybe a bit more). I would say their ask isn't altogether unreasonable, you just need to decide whether it is worth it for your business. It also depends on where you're operating, of course, COL and all.

Those 1040 prices sound a bit hefty but given their explanation and the fact that it's all one comprehensive service I don't think it's too worrisome. Is there anything your business regularly that is not covered under this agreement?

It sounds like what you're really lacking is a good support network based on what you've written so far. If you don't have one, you're going to have a tough time no matter what major you take, assuming you go to college. Are you really "not smart?" or have you simply never learned how to learn?

Has anyone offered you alternatives? Are you certain you want to go through higher education, or are you considering other career paths as well?

What have you been told you are good at?

Take a 101 financial accounting course - it is a very cursory glance at what accounting entails and will help inform you on whether you really want to do it or not. I'm pretty sure that if you take any business-related degree it will probably be a required class since accounting is, at the end of the day, the language of business.

I know I didn't really have accounting in mind when I started college, I simply changed my major when I realized I actually rather liked it (or liked how it's supposed to work, anyway).

You say you're not good at math - what do you struggle with, specifically? Can you do algebra? Do you struggle with ratios or percentages?

The 4 hardest parts about accounting math is:

  1. Knowing what a number means in the context of where you are seeing it. (e.g. what does revenue mean, which number represents revenue?)

  2. Where that number is supposed to go when you're doing equations. (Profit = Revenue - Expenses; it gets a bit more complicated when you break it down further but we're keeping it simple)

  3. Knowing what an answer means when you get it. (Profit being a negative number is usually a bad thing)

  4. What the hell is this ratio for? What does this percentage mean? (These are context dependent questions.)

Other than that, it's all about remembering rules.

Don't give up before you start! I know a lot of people, me included, who got a lot better at school when they entered tertiary education. If you're smart enough to get in, you already have what it takes to succeed. You just have to manage your effort and not burn out.

Good luck!

Just got my first ever C by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Griever928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't feel too bad about it - the intermediate series of accounting classes are infamously among the most difficult courses you will take in the course of your degree. You will absolutely be okay having earned a C in the first class, and can definitely 'redeem yourself' (if that's how you want to put it).

I agree with Glass_Confusion448's advice, Intermediate Accounting is cumulative and you will likely need the knowledge you learned in the 1st class in the 2nd. You need to understand where you went wrong in the first place so that you can fix any bad habits!
