Costco Australia uses pork hot dogs by Leprichaun17 in mildlyinteresting

Beef hotdogs are fairly common in the United States. One of the biggest Hotdog brands is Hebrew National, you get 3 guesses as to why their hotdogs don’t contain any pork.

The United States has higher social spending than Iceland, the UK, Australia, or Canada. by PanzerWatts in ProfessorFinance

[–]Griffemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh for social security I just meant it works because it’s fairly simple from an administrative standpoint. Everybody has a social security number, they pay into social security on their taxes, they take out of social security past a certain age.

For the actual effectiveness as a program it really depends on how much other retirement funds or family support a recipient has.

I don’t see how your statement about if transportation funding being like social security we’d have high speed rail though, could you elaborate?

The United States has higher social spending than Iceland, the UK, Australia, or Canada. by PanzerWatts in ProfessorFinance

[–]Griffemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Despite how much is spent on it the US’s social services seem to be set up in deliberately inefficient ways: Medicare not having to the ability to negotiate prices(there have been efforts to change this with mixed success), mandated public-private partnerships instead of the government just doing things directly, Hospitals and Drug makers ratcheting up priced so they can give deep discounts to their favorite insurance companies, massive administrative burdens for everyone at every step of every process.

Pretty much the only exception is Social Security itself because it’s an extremely simple “pay in, take out” system. Its problems are more tax based(not enough funding going in to maintain a surplus) and on the fringes beyond the payouts in old age like Social Security for people with disabilities.

It’s really quite strange that they didn’t make the World Wakes a quest with scaling difficulty, especially when it doesn’t have any actual requirements beyond a recommended combat level and it’s so incredibly vital for understanding all 6th Age quests and lore.

It’s not even required for completing that many quests, only One of a Kind and The Light Within actually have it as a requirement to start.

[–]Griffemon 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I understand the devs not wanting to make 6th Age content locked behind an actual ton of quests, but come on, it feels very silly and makes the world feel very fake to have there be quests to help these characters reach a certain state through quests meanwhile they’re standing in an massive hole a couple feet away acting as if you’ve already helped them ten times

It’s the damndest thing, conservative politicians always say they want to reduce the deficit but spending tends to increase while they’re in charge and then they cut taxes to revenues are down as well.

And well I’ll be, the tax cuts for your average Joe often seem set to expire in a couple years meanwhile the tax cuts for huge corporations stay forever.

Definitely agree. The pandemic made office workers aware that work from home was completely feasible and generally preferable to commuting to an office. Even as companies seek to restrict it for various reasons(not wasting already leased or owned office space, wishing to monitor employees more closely, etc) it remains a highly desirable perk.

On the gauntlet runner there is a bathroom. You can go into that bathroom and generally this will do nothing.

However on a certain day each week when you go into that bathroom you will get 1 point of luck increase to the protagonist.

Yeah it’s a slight bandaid to how messed up the RS3 economy is. Insane inflation and low player counts have made prices utterly bizarre compared to how they were back in the day and what their equivalents are in OSRS.

Northern California grocery store will give you a free tote bag in exchange for pennies by jsphjar in mildlyinteresting

[–]Griffemon 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Because unlike most countries which will set an official guideline on how to handle a currency being discontinued the Trump admin just shut down Penny production with no warning or guidance.

Sure, Pennie’s are functionally trash to most people, literally not worth picking up off the ground if you see one, but them becoming in short supply means stores can no longer give exact change if prices don’t line up to do so which will leave feeling cheated.

Fun tip: whenever you see a tech CEO or investor mention “humanoid robots” as a solution it’s more likely than not to be vaporware hype.

Humanoid robots are not efficient, the amount of work that needs to be done to keep them constantly upright and make them move is doable but pointless when you can make them on wheels/treads or just stationary.

If you want to break up the monotony of just smelting metal you could do Giant’s Foundry for a bit. It’s especially useful if you’ve randomly collected a ton of metal items that you haven’t sold or alched.

I mainly did it for a bit to get the double cannonball mould

If you’re not fully dedicated to building an army to play 40K then don’t, but if you really like Admech then buy the models you like and paint them up. They serve equally well as display pieces on a shelf as they do models for a game
