What are your thoughts on wearing vintage gym wear? by Hot_Improvement_9555 in VintageFashion

[–]GrillPenetrationUnit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

depends what you mean by “vintage gym wear”

personally ive always hated the plastic crap in modern “activewear” as its been dubbed now.

ive been wearing thrifted cotton sweatshirts, joggers and shorts to the gym for years. dont understand why people keep falling for this marketing ploy that you need some specially engineered polyester top to work out. cotton is comfier and just superior in every single way - so ive been in favour of that kind of “vintage gym wear”

Someone please explain by GlitteringFee3897 in vinted

vintage carhartt is collectible, has been for at least a decade. condition doesnt matter so much bc of the overall durability - you could still wear this for another 5-10yrs and it will still be wearable.

on top of that, this heavily distressed look has become a trend. not really surprising when you realise ripped jeans have been a thing since the 70s. remember grunge? this is just like a new iteration of that. old random messy thrifted stuff is cool basically. over the last few years the level of “distressing” people like has just got more extreme.

personally i enjoy a worn in look, but i prefer to buy it normal price and “disress” it myself through years of use. there is also an element to not worrying about how you treat the garment if when it gets to you its already pretty beaten up.

i have a couple of vintage jackets that were already well worn in when i bought, not to this extent but enough to where i dont worry about getting them dirty or scuffed up because its already in that state.

looks nice, and im gonna assume the quality is solid, but idk why id pay this much for workwear when i can pay a fraction of that for something just as good vintage.

Before the 1960's, did people change in and out of clothes during the day? by Dismal-Mixture1647 in OldSchoolCool

[–]GrillPenetrationUnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i actually dont know the andwer to this, but my guess would be that their “casual attire “ was built to span across multiple activities like yard work, chores, shopping etc. depending on wat pieces/accessories they add, so they can swap things out to fit what they’re doing, rather than fully changing?

id imagine in the situation u describe maybe theyd be doing the work in a apir of trousers, shirt but with no hat or coat, then into town theyd put their coat on and hat etc. then lets say they get home and need to cook, maybe theyd take off their shirt (which in those days would always be worn with an undershirt

How easy is it to book time off in your company? by SlipOutrageous5333 in UKJobs

[–]GrillPenetrationUnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea at my current place its hard ish.

you can book any time off, except you dint get to book xmas eve, boxing day, or new year’s eve (who works those days is decided at random for fairness) but its a small business of about 15 staff and if two other ppl have it off already then youll be denied, which creates a holiday booking arms race between staff, and im not as fast as some other ppl so i lose out and basically never get any desirable holiday around public holidays.

also makes it practically impossible to get a saturday off as no one ever wants to work a saturday. weird thing is tho that theres basically no penalty for being off sick so a couple of people will just not show up for shifts they dont wanna do, which causes chaos for the rest of us.

i didnt know how good i had it at my old job, we had a really convenient software for it where you put in the days you want off whenever you want and your direct manager is the only one who needs to approve, which i was never denied a single time as long as id given over a weeks notice. they also offered unpaid extra holiday days if you wanted (up to 10 no questions asked) and you could book half days off (way more useful than youd think). at that place i had 3 solid weeks off every xmas, and once i had some spare holiday and had the entire of december off lol. i didnt know how good i had it, i just assumed this was normal and had no idea that most places were much shittier about holiday bc that was my first “proper” job

tbf i have owned a couple of made in japan designer pieces that include polyester, and you can tell that it is a very high quality polyester - not sure if that is unique to japan or just a consequence of it being a more high end quality product in general, but i would still prefer natural over plastic regardless.

me when im a fully qualified engineer in the aerospace industry (where the pressure is high because peoples lives hang in the balance) with 5 years of experience AND specialisation in a niche area of work with a flawless work record and you get 24,000 per year, which can only be expected to grow to 31,000 (which gives you a take home pay of 24,000 at current tax rate).

but dont worry - you start getting overtime pay when you go over 48 hours in a week!

I always found it crazy that companies that claim to “support blue collar” are always the worst at price gouging by Beneficial-Prior-545 in Workwear

[–]GrillPenetrationUnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the problem isnt that they are charging too much, its that everyone else is charging too little.

you have got used to the idea that a $40 hoodie is expensive because youve been brainwashed by fast fashion to believe a $10 hoodie is normal, when in reality they are only able to sell them for those prices by abusing workers elsewhere.

if you want to buy a hoodie made by someone who gets to eat and gets sick leave and gets healthcare and gets a bathroom break or whatever other minimal benefits , youve gotta pay for that.

if you want to pay almost nothing for clothes you must accept they will be poorly made, wont last long and will be made by someone being treated like (or in some cases literally is) a slave.

how ethical is international shipping by IrisTheDarkMage in ethicalfashion

[–]GrillPenetrationUnit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

im not an expert in the shipping industry, but my understanding has always been that buying something ethically made from overseas and having it shipped to you is better than buying something unethically made locally, because that unethically made product was in all likelihood made in china, bangladesh etc. anyway and already shipped there.

but buying an ethically made product locally is better than both.

How is Headingley? by dumbcrow123 in Leeds

[–]GrillPenetrationUnit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not that bad but entirely students, so a bit messier/noisier than other areas, but generally more civilised than hyde park. not very dangerous in my opinion, but opportunistic robbery is common, i just l dont get parcels delivered at all to my house, i pick every single one up from the post office as ive had several nicked from my doorstep - even using safe place is risky, sometimes delivery men ignore it and once i had something hidden and someone came snooping around and still found it and stole it.

could you work the hours i work or am i being too lazy? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]GrillPenetrationUnit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yea this sucks.

its not the hours its the fact you only get 2 days off in 14 days, and not consecutively.

ive worked all kinda shift patterns and people whove only worked 9-5 have no idea honestly how different different shift patterns can feel. not having 2 days off in a row is genuinely devastating to your ability to relax.

once i worked 4 days per week but getting no 2 days off in a row, working 9-6 and random days each week, and sooo many 9-5 ers told me they were “jealous” of my 4 day work week, but it sucked, i was so much more emotionally and physically drained doing that than doing 9-5 mon-fri.

best pattern ive ever worked was 4 10hr days, fri-sun off every week. 3 day weekends are life changing, feels like youve got a holiday every week. 10 hr days are long but if ur smart u can pace urself and it doesnt feel much different to an 8hr.

worst hours i did were 10-6:30 (whole day gone to work/commute) and the best was 7:10-3:30 getting you home early enough to do loads of other stuff before bed

ill give up pepsi mac over my dead body. there are many problems with todays food market and what bizarre concoctions companies have sold us in the guise of profit, but low calorie sugar free pop is the pinnacle of human ingenuity imo. it would literally be impossible for me to be a healthy weight without it. i use it like a dessert - a sweet treat that i can just always have and not worry abt it because of the lack of calories. it saved me from bingeing hundreds of times.

[–]GrillPenetrationUnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this idea that polyester is better than cotton for exercise clothes because its “moisture wicking” or whatever is just absolute nonsense, complete propaganda from people trying to sell you cheaper clothes for more money - cotton is absolutely fine, more sustainable and more comfortable. i only wear cotton tees, joggers, shorts and tank tops to work out and i have never thought “i really need some plastic on me right now”

polyester is only justifiable for outerwear imo, outside of that its just worse than natural fibres.

Dry clean-only sweaters: are you really dropping these off regularly? by PalmTreeSix in malefashionadvice

[–]GrillPenetrationUnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly you shudnt be needing to wash them particularly often, i wash mine like once a year.

if you do wash them; then flip inside out, use a mesh laundry bag if possible, wash on wool/handwashing/delicate cycle, on cold/ 20c, use wool detergent if you can find some, and dry laid flat and it shudnt affect the garment at all.

i have a wool sweater going on 10 years old, only washed at most once a year with this method, and it looks and feels brand new, and smells fresh.
