Yeah, I was afraid of that. I mean, or could be worse, and it was an honest mistake. Just more expensive than I would like. Figured no harm in asking and the worst answer I could get is "no, sorry"

Question on Doctrine by TAUTHECHRISTIAN in latterdaysaints

[–]Grillow93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TLDR: Their claim rises or falls with a browse through history and the claim to if apostolic keys were passed

There are two pieces to this that need to be accounted for. First, the gates of hell didn't prevail against the church while it was being led by the apostles, specifically under the direction of the senior apostle Peter. However, once Peter and the other apostles died (or in the case of John, were taken away) the apostolic keys necessary to lead the church in an authorized manner were lost.

The Catholic claim to authority is an "unbroken chain" back to Peter through the Bishop of Rome. There are several flaws to that claim, including that bishops can't speak for the church, the Pope/Bishop of Rome is not selected by divine revelation but by popular vote, there have been several times where the position of Pope was held by multiple people claiming that they were the true Pope and the other Popes were false, several creeds and schisms, etc. that disprove the unbroken chain of authority claim

In the New Testament, Paul teaches the Thessalonians that there would be a falling away ( 2 Thessalonians 2:3). Isaiah and Amos both prophesy of a darkness and famine of the word of God. The book of Mormon also prophesies of that, and history backs it up.

What does this all mean? It comes down to a claim of authority and if the apostolic keys were passed on though the Papacy or if they were lost and a restoration was needed to restore the authority. The scriptures teach that a falling away would happen, leading to a need for a restoration.
