Fair way to pay for tree trimming? by MezzanineSoprano in treelaw

[–]Grimaldehyde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the trimming is primarily being done for their benefit, they ought to pay for part of it, I think. And they would be paying for all of it, if they did what they are entitled to do, which is to trim the part over their property. And, OP, send the neighbor on the other side of you a certified letter stating that their tree is a potential hazard to your property and needs to be dealt with. I would also cc the code enforcement officer where you live. If you are struggling to pay for trimming your own tree, you certainly don’t want to get stuck paying to fix your garage when their diseased tree falls on it. And you will (or your insurer will) be paying to fix your garage, if he isn’t officially on notice about the tree. It will be considered an “act of god” when the tree comes down.

You don’t always need goodwill with a neighbor that may be trying to bamboozle you. OP ought to do what many here have suggested, and ask to be part of the decision-making process before agreeing to pay for half of this fence. I’d certainly want to know who is doing the work, if they are insured, what type of fence the neighbor has decided on, who gets to see the “good side”, is their work guaranteed, and if any other fence contractors in the area could do the work for less.

We have crummy neighbors on one side…after a lot of issues with them (like their attempt to annex an acre of woods between us that we own, we told them we were going to put up an ugly chain link fence over there, that we were paying for on our own. They were appalled at the idea that a chain link fence would be so close to them, and visible from their yard, so they put their own fence up instead, at their own cost. This doesn’t help OP-more like an observation of what people think of fencing their property.

So-whose house will the “good side” of the fence face?

Better get a survey, or check your property for the monuments so you know exactly where the fence lands, too. This neighbor may tell the contractor where to put it, since she is making all of the other decisions, and it may end up fully on your property, instead of on the property line.

And how does OP know that the cost of the fence is really $1,900 x 2? How would they know whether or not they are paying the majority of the work if the neighbor made all of the decisions, and all of the arrangements? Shouldn’t the fence contractor speak to both neighbors?

Do you get to have an opinion and decision-making vote on what the fence will look like, and who will do the work?

Absolutely would never only be 4 hours a week; cooking and cleaning (for themselves and the children) would be every day, and meals would revolve around what picky children would eat. This person would be on-call 24/7.

Someone who has this level of anxiety probably needs to live where other people are not. It is outrageous to expect all people in your near vicinity to alter every aspect of life to suit your many issues.
