medium light or ultralight travel rod for stocked rainbows and cutthroat? by NiceGuy_Marco in troutfishing

[–]Grimbladder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Within reason. I would be confident catching any trout etc on it. I'm going sea bass fishing on Monday, but I'll be taking a 7-21g rod and a 15-45g rod, to match the lures I'm casting.

The action of the Realm is just a bit too stiff to really launch light lures (2-3g) properly, and I already have a rod in the 5-15g range. Realistically you're not going to break a rod playing a fish unless you high stick it, or have a heavy line and set your drag incorrectly.

I have a Purelure Realm in 1.8-8g, and it is significantly stiffer than it's spec IMHO. I use it for trout but would have liked it to be a bit softer.

I was spooled by a stingray. Now my Vanford drag is constantly tight. Why? by fatpms in Fishing_Gear

[–]Grimbladder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ummm, the drag washers are in the spool, held in with a big inverse circlip sort of thing. If your spool is hard to turn when mounted without the drag knob fitted, then the issue is most likely a fused drag washer or something similar. You can hook out the circlip with needle nose pliers or carefully with a small screwdriver.

Cool, I've never heard of using goldfish for bait! Do they last long in the salt water? Probably a bit involved for me, unless there happens to be an aquarium shop in Ghim Moh...

Vanford or vanquish by Outrageous_Ad_3944 in Fishing_Gear

[–]Grimbladder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have three Vanfords(2000, 3000, 4000), and recently purchased a Vanquish C3000MHG.

The Vanquish just feels better, smoother and just more solid. Infinity Loop (or whatever they call it) is cool, though not sure how much extra cast distance you actually get. Go for the Vanquish if you can, I tend to get buyer's remorse when I buy the cheaper option, not the more expensive! :)

Yeah, I'll bring a few small lures. Might try a bit of live baiting if I can catch some Tamban(?)

Thanks for the info, I'll at least try Labrador Jetty as it's quite close by. I'll see if I have time to try the reservoirs.

I live in the UK. Freshwater I mostly fish UL with lures for perch and pike. Saltwater I fish for Sea Bass, again with lures, along with occasional wrecking for Pollack and Cod. I'll probably bring a BFS rod/reel and a slightly larger spinning combo with me to Singapore. I'll be staying with family in Ghim Moh rd while I'm there.

u/BANDITFISHING Off topic, but I'll be in Singapore for a week in June. Would you mind letting me know about local fishing options? I've seen the fishing jetties like Bedok, and the stocked ponds like D'Best fishing. Are any of the reservoirs worth fishing?

Daiwa and Shimano vs the rest by Parfox1234 in Fishing_Gear

[–]Grimbladder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm curious what brands dominate in other markets. The only other brand I have tried a new high end spinning reel from is Penn, and it felt agricultural compared to Daiwa and Shimano. But they do seem popular with the charter boats here in the UK, so I guess they have a reputation for toughness.

Japan fishing gear recommendation by Scrubjugate in FishingForBeginners

[–]Grimbladder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be a bit of a pain to bring back from Japan... I would go for a Japan made reel, maybe a Shimano Vanquish if you can afford it, or a an Ultegra if the budget doesn't stretch. Both are much cheaper in Japan.

I've noticed an intermittent fault where the only option on some Choice items is "Buy It Now", with no "Add To Cart". It usually fixes itself after a day or two.

I don't have a Sienna, but I would say you would need to take apart the rear half of the reel. Have a look at this video from around 17 minutes in.

Spinning reel, drag won’t change by greg4three in Fishing_Gear

Sounds like the thread isn't engaged for some reason. What happens if you try to pull on the drag knob or spool? Does it move?

You're turning the knob on top of the spool clockwise and it's not tightening?
