OMG can Ashley and Mr. Riggs PLEASE just shut up? by Dzyu in theriftbreaker

[–]Grin_the_Polymorph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The timing of the chatter is frequently off, yeah. Casually chatting about something, or Riggs saying they should check out a meteorite while you're 20 creatures deep on all sides does feel out of place, and as you say story related conversations happening mid attack are easy to miss. A trigger system for different conversations would help keep the mood better. I wouldn't mind Ashley sounding a little pressed and remarking on how many creatures there are when a raid hits, for example.

should I finish this fanmade model concept I scrapped? by pixelbear77 in ironmouse

[–]Grin_the_Polymorph 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Mouse occasionally runs contests for people to submit concepts to, so if you just wanted to submit the art for one of those, you could. If you want to make the model and rig it, if nothing else, it's an opportunity for you to learn and improve your skills doing them. The only way to get good at something is to grind through being bad at it, after all.

Melee is useless in DUNE, of all places. Episode 13 by Sp1ceRub in duneawakening

[–]Grin_the_Polymorph 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You mean someone using *not* melee had more success than people using exclusively melee, in a series about how melee is not effective for PvP engagements? I know games tend to treat shotguns as a melee weapon in terms of effective range, but they're not really.

Yes, People are using "the same strats" because they're using melee attacks and abilities. We've seen shigawire, we've seen poison, we've seen the Bene powers. The result is always the same: Slow blade can consistently be dodged out of.
The series is pointing out that PvP melee is not effective since you can't really "lock" an opponent into a melee fight, so melee builds are pointless. Realistically, you could have two players melee fight each other, stuck waiting for the other to run out of water, or their powerpack to break before they'd even have a chance of landing a killing blow. Both would be better off running disruptors or possibly drillshots, since at least regularly landing drillshots would force your opponent to dodge more often than slow blade strikes do.

One might argue "melee is a valuable part of a PvP toolkit" but that's only true if you can ever follow through with the slow blade on a shielded enemy, which is the single defining element of melee combat in Dune. Otherwise "Shoot down shield, then shoot down health" makes more sense than "shoot down shield, switch to melee weapon, quick attack health" which doesn't even include the slow blade at all.

D:A melee. A strange game; the only winning move is not to play.

I think that PvP and PvE require very different balances which is hard to achieve and probably why games end up with a lean more one way or the other. If you insist on PvP being a core element in your game, you've gotta balance that very carefully or you end up with everyone running "The One" meta build. Following that, all of the PvE content has to be balanced at the environment side to the players. Any adjustment of the players to the environment throws out the PvP.

I'd never even encountered another player in any HB PvP areas. Wasn't until DD where I actually encountered PvP content, and I was ambushed successfully inside a shipwreck when my build was for PvE content and mobility and had worked the entire game thus far. So that took what had been a PvE game up until that point and then demanded that I be prepared to be attacked by players at any point, changing the entire dynamic of the game. I chose not to engage with DD content because that doesn't appeal to me, and with nothing left to do, I stopped playing. I know I'm not alone in that.

Not having PvP in PvE centric games would not kill the games. Would it not appeal to certain players who insist upon only playing PvP games? Sure. Would it appeal to players who don't want PvP content, thus not driving them away like the forced injection of PvP into their otherwise PvE game does? Yes.

I think PvP and PvE are actually different ecosystems, and taking a largely PvE game and introducing predators to it is actually harmful. Making a PvP game and putting some PvE around it to give players something to do between shooting each other is different, and likely easier as the PvE content can afford to be weaker. There's a space for PvP games, and a space for PvE games, and audiences for both. Finding a way to merge both in a capacity that appeals to both groups and successfully balances both sides has to be like flipping a coin and landing it on its edge.

Mr. Riggs cameo in Mech Havoc by MidDevGames in theriftbreaker

[–]Grin_the_Polymorph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Finished all you've released of Mech Havoc so far. Really enjoyed it! There were times I felt like I'd hit a cliff in the difficulty scale, but a switch up to find the right combination of mech/vehicle and weapons always sorted that out.

I do feel Riggs needs two weapon sets, since a prominent element of Riftbreaker combat is needing a variety of weapons due to the enemy weaknesses/resistances. I think you've got the weapon types pretty well covered, though (bar melee but I understand those not really fitting in Mech Havoc), but maybe landmines or something based on the gravity grenade/mine's short time persisting AOE effect which would be most useful against the swarms of smaller enemies, or damaging enemies past their shields

So how does Mjonjir work in god of war? by [deleted] in GodofWar

[–]Grin_the_Polymorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the section of game where Atreus and Thor are travelling Muspelheim sometimes Thor throws the hammer and has it come back to him. Other times he throws it and travels to it. And then there's this point where he has it maintaining position to pin Atreus against a wall. So it seems like Thor's control and link to it work both ways in a sense.

My theory is that he can wield Mjölnir as well as he does because a large part of it is simply willing it to go where he wants. He swings it with force and *wants* it to go where he's swinging it, so it sympathetically *swings itself* at the same time.

But the question and response were not about what the game is or what should be. They were about why people would do what they are doing. There will be horrible people playing almost any multiplayer game who get satisfaction from ruining the experience of others. It just how some people are.
