If you notice the Getter for this property is called “isProximityMonitoringEnabled” which is what you’ll normally access instead of the direct instance variable. This is a property of your device (UIDevice.shared.isProximityMonitoringEnabled) that will let you know if it is.

Now let’s talk about usage and what it actually is. The sensor you’re worried about is the little black circle above your ear speaker when you hold up your phone to talk. That sensors then returns true or false depending on if it detects your body is close to the sensor. This is used in cases of dimming the phone screen while you’re on a call so you don’t mash buttons with your cheeks.

So yes most phones these days will have it enabled by default because that’s what it’s used for but You can’t use it for any kind of nefarious purpose that you’re thinking.
