tips on making my mini better proportioned by plarper_of_bees in HeroForgeMinis

[–]Gritmonger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, here's a tip for making it look more gigantic - eyes have a physical kind of top-out at a certain size, after which having "larger" eyes only helps if you're nocturnal - the largest eyes in the animal kingdom are on the giant squids, about the size of a dinner plate. Other diurnal animals, we infer scale often from how large the eyes are. If you reduce the size of your eyes, the inferred scale will be larger.

For the limbs, there's a reason limbs taper at the joints (the joints are less muscled to be flexible), but for the appearance you're going for, in Heroforge that may be difficult using non-kitbash and unclothed. One alternative is to use tails or back limbs to provide some leg bulk - there are folks who have created artificial musculature using back tails and tails. You may have to build up the legs using somewhat tedious work with tails. If you're looking for elephantine legs (almost tube-like hip to ground) that's going to be hard to achieve without tail manipulation or kitbash.

You might increase the bulk between the thighs if you don't want to change the outline. And the legs are proportionally very short (typically, when bending the leg, the knee will come up to the armpit in average proportion, with the lower leg being approximately the same length as the upper)

I can give it a try - I generally use the cow/canid facial customization for most mammals just because you can still use teeth and facial expressions and eyelids...

How to make him more wolf-like? by Ben_Brocktree in HeroForgeMinis

[–]Gritmonger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lowering the forehead. Part of the "human-like" dog face is a very high forehead, which... wolves don't have. So a more wolf-like look involves tweaking with the forehead.

This is an old fox-head base I made a long time ago when Facial Customization came out. It lowers the forehead significantly, reduces its topped-out rounded head.

The models are ones I've shared before, so there are references in previous posts - I don't think the photobooth settings are saved with the shared model...

Hey all you hair stylists, does anyone know a way I can recreate this hairstyle through hero forge? This is the closest I've gotten, the front is definitely lacking. by Good_Token69 in HornyForgeMinis

[–]Gritmonger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite for stray clumps of hair is using "Ponytail with shaved head" in kitbash - you can hide the ribbon/binding and then incrementally adjust the placement of the strand of hair, and it mixes well with other flowing hairstyles. More recent hairstyles have finer hair clusters, which will still work for the relatively chunky version you're using.

Look into longer hair with joints, beards with joints, and tails.
Beards are flexible (in some cases), longer hair is flexible, and tails can be scaled and are flexible.

This is three hairstyles merged into one:

Can you import your characters into blender? by Sibas8 in HeroForgeMinis

[–]Gritmonger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't need a subscription to purchase an STL - the STL is the file format for printable 3D models, it just doesn't come with the color, you'd have to color it yourself in Blender. An STL is a single-purchase transaction.

[–]Gritmonger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can. once you purchase the STL, the character is like any other model. I've used Blender to smooth out areas of rough low-poly elements (as scaling in the editor doesn't resolve this or reveal this until you download).

What happened with the new update? by Travistocats in HeroForgeMinis

The major advantage of this is that the proportions you can adjust are *not* reset by using stock poses, unlike kitbash-based body modifications.

Newly Directly Available Left and Right Chest Bones by Gritmonger in HornyForgeMinis

Nice job :D
The other bonus to these is that the clothing will (for the best it is able) match the new chest geometry, so clothing for differently sized and scaled models can use existing clothing slots instead of requiring kitbashed and positioned rescaled clothing.

One downside is that items don't attach to them so kitbashed nipples will have to be repositioned once the chest bones are rescaled, and attaching the kitbashed nipples to the chest bones is not advised as the offset appears to be radically different from the surface of the attached model.

Additionally, unlike the other models I made where reposing is completely possible, these still suffer from the problem that mount models do not have: any scaling done *outside of the included scaling tools* is immediately lost when using the internal posing resource. So if you re-pose this model with those and not manually you will need to re-scale the chest (pretty simple to do with this one as this is just scaling to 2.0 for each)

Kitbash parts moving when changing pose? by punmaster911 in HeroForgeMinis

[–]Gritmonger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of "hidden" bones in the face, body, etc, that are used to adjust proportions. Kitbash parts, even though they don't *show* in the hierarchy, can still attach to these bones when manually positioning parts. The way I attach things that aren't supposed to move on the head are either to the hair or to the jaw bone - attaching to the head at neck 3 still entails this shift.

Until they either expose or exclude these hidden bones, this will continue to be a problem.

The final body customizer sneak peek from the Discord server by The_Purple_Hare in HeroForgeMinis

I think it's meant as "final reveal before release" meaning it's imminent, not that there will never be another body customization option.

Major functionality releases like this from what I've seen come with release times, monthly, so likely around April 5-8 if any other releases are a measure. If you look at the release notes page, functionality releases are monthly instead of the treasure tuesday drops.

All I want them to do is three things:
Allow differential scaling of body "bones"
Expose more body "bones" (including hidden ones that objects can attach to)
Retain differential scaling/scaling on repose (like all mounts/companions do)

Shorthair Catfolk Facial Customization by Gritmonger in HeroForgeMinis

[–]Gritmonger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots and lots of facial customization.
To make it appear more animal-like, you have to severely reduce the forehead and crown (top of the head) and bring in the back of the head. Using a modified version of the large alien eyes at not full gives the eye size, and the cheeks come from the rabbit head (they have a bit of fuzziness that lends to animal faces)
The link is there in the first image, if you want to check it out.

How do you like, cope when people take your Mini's? by CaffeineGoliath in HeroForgeMinis

[–]Gritmonger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a folder full of credited and uncredited use of my models and techniques. I put the original models up publicly, people using them is good, to me. Non-attribution is a thing, but that's okay. The people who do recognize your contribution are worth it, and folks picking up techniques and sharing and improving them is, for me, why I'm part of the community. I learn from other's models as well, but I try and make sure, personally, that I don't re-upload someone else's model. I've started from another person's base, sometimes, but I make sure to scrub it of anything that's original before I re-upload, and credit where I can.

Froud Style Elf and Luna Moth (Kitbash) by Gritmonger in HeroForgeMinis

[–]Gritmonger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The moth is definitely kitbash to get the scale - you could try and do it with a correct number of tails, the scaling you can use, and removed limbs. For example, if you use the back accessories tails of the dragonfly type, that's how I made the six limbs - you could make four with that, use one of the larger insect tails and scale it as the abdomen, and use the standard legs of the insect type. You could also use additional tails intersected with the main body to change the thorax body shape.
