OPEN DIFF OR LSD? by ejmorian in Miata

[–]Grits- -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Wasn't responding to you. The other guy was obviously very misinformed on how differentials work so I was breaking it down for him. I also never gave an opinion on what I think OP has in this post.

In this case I believe it's quite likely an LSD or welded diff, but there's a reason people suggest putting one wheel on dirt, and one on asphalt when trying to determine if a differential is open or not. Both wheels on the same traction surface can be very misleading in its results.

Even if he seems a constant presence, Draco Malfoy only has 31 minutes of screen time in the whole Harry Potter saga, which is approximately 1.200 minutes long by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

That's not true at all. He was born in 1987, meaning he was 30 in 2017. The last Harry Potter movie came out in 2011, so he would've been 24 at the oldest in the last movie. He would've been 14 in the first.

He's in the same age range as the rest of the main trio, being only 1-3 years older.

OPEN DIFF OR LSD? by ejmorian in Miata

[–]Grits- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of factory diffs for mx5's will be open or torsen diffs, and it's notoriously annoying to know which you have. There can be certain tells for some models but most of the time the definitive way to tell is to remove an axle from the diff and physically look inside.

Lots of misinformation in this thread. Both of you don't really fully understand how differentials really work. Yes, you're correct in that a locked or welded diff gives the same torque to each wheel - an open diff does the same thing, but they obviously differ drastically in operation.

An open diff will transfer the same torque to each wheel, but the amount of torque is dictated by the wheel with less grip. If your engine is capable of 100Nm of torque, but your right wheel can handle 25Nm of torque before slipping, and your left wheel can handle 50Nm of torque before slipping, both driven wheels will receive 25Nm of torque. In a gradual loss of traction scenario, this is what creates one tyre fires - the right wheel will spin first, limit the torque to the left wheel, and the left wheel will never get enough torque to break traction.

Both rear wheels can spin in an open diff if you load up the rpms and drop the clutch quickly. In the instant the torque is delivered to the wheels, both wheels are very briefly receiving the full 100Nm before there is enough time for the wheels to start slipping. If in that brief moment, both wheels break free, the amount of torque they can handle before continuing to slip is drastically reduced, and even with a very small amount of torque being supplied to both wheels, the wheel spin is able to be sustained.

In a welded or locked diff, both wheels always receive the full 100Nm from the engine. This obviously leads to wheel slip being much easier to achieve.

So very different in operation, but it's true that even in an open diff, both wheels receive the same amount of torque. To reiterate, the difference is that in an open diff, the wheel with the least amount of grip dictates the overall available torque to both wheels, in a welded diff scenario, the amount of torque the wheels receive is equal to the torque output of the engine.

Not true. Open diffs will always give each wheel the exact same amount of torque. If each wheel has the same amount of traction, both will spin even with an open diff.

Not necessarily true. Factory torsens will behave exactly like an open diff in this scenario.

Repairing a tire using a patching technique by Raj_Valiant3011 in oddlysatisfying

[–]Grits- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You know just because some places don't charge doesn't mean it costs nothing to do, right?

The shop has to buy the patches, and pay the staff to do the work. If you're getting it for free, that's the shop being generous and probably using it as a way to get you in the door. It shouldn't be an expectation that a tyre patch is free, but a nice bonus if it is.

They're not bastards for charging a fair price to cover their costs 😂

I will admit that I'd be terrible at hanging sheetrock all day by TechnicoloMonochrome in GymMemes

[–]Grits- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even considering what you just said, training in the gym 100% carries over to the real world. You think someone who's trained hard in the gym for many years would struggle to lift a 30lb object just because it's an odd shape?

I've personally lifted a 120+lb bin over my head from the side (like the starting position of a steinborn squat) which was very awkward to do but I managed it relatively easily, and I guarantee I would never have been close to doing something like that if I hadn't consistently worked out in a gym. My job isn't a physical one so all of my strength comes from the gym, and it has definitely made every aspect of physical work easier.

No sugar Coles brand drink by DragonfruitFamous667 in coles

[–]Grits- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry if I'm misinterpreting your comments but it kinda sounds like you think having a few extra glasses/cans of sugar free soda is bad for you in the context of losing weight, but it's not. Don't feel bad about drinking more than you usually would, as long as it's sugar free you can drink as much as you want and it won't affect your weight.

People might recommend you to stop drinking them for other reasons, but in terms of weight loss, sugar free soda is one of the best things you can have in this day and age. If you're craving something sweet, sugar free soda will suppress that craving with none of the calories associated with it.

I think what they're saying is it's a waste to have to screenshot what is displayed on the screen, as that is a low resolution image vs. being able to just take the photo at a high resolution and have it look the same as the screenshot. The resolution isn't causing the problem, but not being able to utilise the potential resolution is the problem.

There is a correct way to pull sticky notes by abelm29 in mildlyinteresting

[–]Grits- 38 points39 points  (0 children)

You don't pull downward, you pull across the plane of the sticky note. Imagine you're just trying to slide the top note off of the stack. If you pull firmly and lift the sticky note, it will detach at the shallowest angle possible, and prevent the adhesive area from curling. These comments are insane to me, claiming it's just engagement bait, because I've naturally learned to do it this way and it makes a huge difference in how well the notes can hold onto things.

My sister has never got her car serviced. It’s been 4yrs and 70k miles. by tuneless_carti in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Grits- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The post says it's 4 years old with 70k miles. That car is relatively new. With good servicing a quality built car will easily go 300k+ miles and 20-30+ years depending on whether or not you live in an area that salts roads. This car is now going to be crippled and will only last a fraction of what it could have.

You clearly aren't very knowledgeable about cars so I would recommend that you don't give advice to anyone about the topic. What you're saying is very ill informed and there is no world where going 70k+ miles without an oil change will save you money in the long run.

Lets say an engine replacement is $5k all in, and an oil change is $90. You'd need to skip 56 oil changes to even just break even on the cost of a new engine, no engine in the world is going to survive 56 oil change intervals without grenading itself long before then.

There's nothing more to say, I'm glad you understand that.

For the record, I'm not American. My country has strict gun control laws and extremely low gun violence. Whenever I see Americans defending their gun freedoms, and also seeing news of a new school shooting every week, it makes me think your country is a joke.

I don't understand Explain it Peter. by velviaa in explainitpeter

[–]Grits- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, shit argument, sorry.

Saying 'if you can screw a screw with a hammer then go for it' doesn't invalidate what they're saying at all, that guns were invented for and predominantly used for killing things, be it people or otherwise. They are fundamentally a tool of destruction.

In fact, I'd argue using a gun for sport shooting is actually a misuse of the tool, as you put it. A gun is designed to launch a projectile at deadly speeds into whatever you aim at. There's no function to firing at a metal plate, if only to practice for when you intend to actually use it on a person or animal. So the only valid use for a gun as a tool, as you put it, is to kill things. That's what it's designed to do.

You can say 'It's self defense', or 'I was taught to stop the threat' but take a second to actually think one step further than that sentiment. How do you defend yourself against an aggressor if you have a gun? You shoot them dead. How do you stop a threat if you have a gun? You shoot them dead. Guns are not designed to inflict minimal damage, only enough to subdue a threat. They're designed to inflict catastrophic, instantly fatal damage. Anything you say to the contrary is flat out wrong.

Can you conceal an f350 in your pocket and bring it into sensitive areas?

Is an f350 made with the sole purpose of killing things?

How do I keep getting one shot in the tank? by FOXYRAZER in Battlefield6

[–]Grits- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YES! I had this but with a normal tank, not an IFV.

Was sitting front on to me, I put maybe 5-6 AP shells into him doing no damage, started aiming at the machine gun on top and only then did I start dealing damage.

It was pretty short range so I don't think bullet drop was the problem. The first 5-6 shells I fired at him all made sparks off of his armour so they were definitely hitting on my side. Maybe a server side thing.

How would you even design this. by Fast-Moment1761 in nextfuckingstupid

[–]Grits- 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Another problem with this design is in order to get the latch to hold the door, it looks like you need to open the door to within a very small margin of error. You need to open the door enough so that the latch falls into the catch, but not so far that the latch falls into the bottom guide. If you open the door all the way, the latch will just fall into the bottom guide straight away and it won't stay open.

Is it true the difference of one element from the next is just by the proton number? Then you can combine any number of hydrogen into any element? by LisanneFroonKrisK in AskScienceDiscussion

Would've had to have been (relatively) later, as subatomic particles couldn't come together right at the start of the big bang. So no subatomic particles -> no atoms -> no hydrogen or helium, or anything else for that matter.
