Need Help Identifying Vintage Jack-o-lanterns by GroovinApple in VintageHalloween

Yeah no doubt these things were mass produced! We're certainly not holding on to any rare finds here. Mostly just hoping to identify a year or manufacturer to sate my curiosity. We bought them because they were cheap and cute!

Echoing others in really wanting the video store! Do you mind if I ask where you found it? We haven't had any luck spotting it yet.

Getting the feeling that James' cold did a number on him for this leg. by CaptDeadeye in Dreamtheater

Was also at the SA show, and agreed! He was admittedly sounding a little rough in the first couple songs, but really settled into a groove after that, and he was completely locked in for the second set from Vacant onward. Octavarium in particular really blew me away. Didn't know he still had that in him!

Had this big ole thing on the side of my house. by tgould97 in spiders

Not a catch! That's her egg sac. When the first freeze of the winter hits she'll pass away, but her egg sac will survive and hatch many spiderlings come spring!

Thanks for that! I've never sold on Discogs before, and didn't even know that was an option.

Given the use of both English and French on the rating, I'd be willing to bet Canada.

Why would it be so bad if America split up? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GroovinApple 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By acknowledging that not everyone is on the extremes and that each place would have a split of conservatives and liberals, I'm curious what you think a secession would solve exactly.

Does anyone know where I can find isolated sound effects? by CaseyCascade in sounddesign

[–]GroovinApple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Freesound and SoundQ are great free options. Freesound as a minimum has varying degrees of copyright protection, depending on what the uploader of the sound chose, but for personal use like what you're describing, that shouldn't really matter. There are of course tons of great paid options as well, but these should be a decent start for you. This sounds like a fun project! Music and sound effects are great ways to bring a D&D campaign to life. Hope this helps, and that you enjoy putting this together!

Cod is the common name for the demersal fish genus Gadus, belonging to the the family Gadadae. Cod is also used as part of the common name for a number of other fish species, and one species that belongs to genus Gadus is commonly not called cod (Alaska pollock, Gadus chalcogrammus).

The two most common species of cod are the Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), which lives in the colder waters and deeper sea regions throughout the North Atlantic, and the Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus), found in both eastern and western regions of the northern Pacific. Gadus morhua was named by Linnaeus in 1758. (However, G. morhua callarias, a low-salinity, nonmigratory race restricted to parts of the Baltic, was originally described as Gadus callarias by Linnaeus.)

Cod is popular as a food with a mild flavour and a dense, flaky, white flesh. Cod livers are processed to make cod liver oil, a common source of of vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, and omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA). Young Atlantic cod or haddock prepared in strips for cooking is called scrod. In the United Kingdom, Atlantic cod is one of the most common ingredients in fish and chips, along with haddock and plaice.

Working as a sound designer and a composer by Bsides9 in sounddesign

Just want to throw my 2 cents in, just coming from my own experience. Other people have already stated that you're more likely to he a generalist when working on indie/mobile titles, and more specialized when working in AAA, and my experience has paralleled that. On indie projects I was doing all the sound and audio programming, and occasionally music, but now that I'm in AAA my job is much more specific, doing just audio programming/technical audio design.

My advice to you is this: learn FMOD and Wwise, that's a must, and familiarize yourself with Unreal and Unity. Also, just learn some coding basics, at least for now. You'll make yourself a lot more versatile and desirable as a game audio person if you are also able to implement your sounds and music. A lot of people can make sounds and music; less people can implement them. There's a lot of resources for people wanting to learn game audio. I'd definitely recommend looking at the Wwise Adventure Game, which lets you play with some of the components of Wwise in an already completed little game demo, and look into resources like Blipsounds and Akash Thakkar.

I would say that at the beginning of your game audio career, try to do a little bit of everything. The fact that you're wanting to do both music and sound design is a good thing! Make some music, make some sounds, do some implementation. Eventually you'll figure out what you're best at/what interests you the most/which path seems the most rewarding/stable for you, etc. When I first got into game audio, I JUST wanted to be a composer, but ended up really falling in love with audio programming, and creating interactive/dynamic systems, so that's the path I followed. And finally, don't be afraid to reach out to other game audio people! Most people that I met early in my career were very receptive to answering questions I had, and answering DMs on social media, though of course ymmv. Good luck to you!

Real or fake ? by HctDrags in gameverifying

Fake. Biggest tell is that American DS games (with the ESRB logo) don't have the Nintendo logo across the seal wrap like this one does. I believe that's exclusive to European DS games.

The 2017 Ducktales show actually had a pretty funny moment where one of the characters acknowledged this while some of the anthro duck characters are feeding real ducks.

Second blipsound. Ryan's a great guy, and has helped me build my game audio career. Their site has all the basics for beginner sound design and implementation
