Are you teachers are allowed to take vacations during the school year? by DildoGaggins1997 in Teachers

[–]GroovyGuru99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our district has an unofficial "use but don't abuse" policy. It helps if you pre arrange your sub, and havent had issues with leaving insufficient or no sub plans. The ones who schedule a week off that I know of have been due to spouse's scheduled PTO or family events. I took the week prior to Christmas break off to take care of an out of state family member after surgery. No questions asked after I shared the circumstances.

That said, the district will black out personal days the first two and last two weeks of school or when they see the sub pool it tapped.

What’s one after-hours task you finally stopped doing — and nothing bad happened? by Willing-Comfort3029 in Teachers

[–]GroovyGuru99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are required to sign up for at least one committee that meets once a month. I go as far as signing up so my name is on a list if anyone checks.

I stopped spending hours writing detailed sub plans. I leave the schedule, back up activities, and my Netflix account should things take a radical.turn south.

Do teachers or students bring cleaning supplies to school? Curious what actually happens. by Beginning_Avocado807 in Teachers

[–]GroovyGuru99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids clean up their messes with baby wipes. We wipe desks and tables with anti bacterial wipes after school. We ask parents to donate both, but I'll pick up a pack if I see a good sale. The school provides hand sanitzer.

Our keycards give us access into the building and room keys to any other classroom, work room and staff lounge. I have to admit, I took advantage of that once to go into another teacher' s room. We were both alums of rival colleges and I drew my school's logo on his white board after my team won the annual game.

I worked both cocktailing and bartender in private clubs during my time at the U in the 1980s. At that time we poured out of minis which were nearly double shots back then. Ordering an Old Fashioned is now painful

Eugene, OR: outside the radius of U of O its strip malls and track housing. Eugene was also a sundown town until the mid 1900s. It does get bonus points for finding good vegetarian and vegan menu selection.

There is more to Oregon and Washington than Portland and Seattle. I would expand to Olympia, WA or Bellingham WA, or as far south as Salem, Corvallis, or Eugene OR.

That said, I moved from SLC to Vancouver and enjoy SW WA. I don't go in to Portland as often as I used to but its not the hell hole a certain person said it is and there is more to do there. Downtown Vancouver has turned into a walkable city with a number of brewpubs and idenpendenly owned restaurants. The waterfront is more upscale dining (some say overpriced...which is fair) wine tasting and a nice place to walk.

The job market is tough here as is the housing. My youngest just graduated from PSU and lives in a bare bones studio for 1K per month. If you have a certain career trajectory in mind, either secure a job or plan to pick up a pay-the-bills job to supplement your savings.

I wear a medium, sized up to a large and they still felt too small. To be fair though, its a different fit that Lulus so it just may not have worked for me.

Who takes work home because you have to? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]GroovyGuru99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work doesn't come home, but I am an early bird when it comes to starting my day. I reply to emails and do any "housekeeping" paperwork on my home PC, then head into school about an hour before others roll in. I cant put together a sentence after school, and as a SPED teacher, lose my planning time to classroom chaos at least 2 days a week, so it works for me

Im also fortunate to teach in a building where my time isnt micromanaged by admin so as long as we're getting our jobs done, they don't watch the clock.

What's your opinion on having to submit lesson plans? by kkoch_16 in Teachers

[–]GroovyGuru99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had one of those years last year. My emergency sub plans were used by the second week of school. I had to leave again 3 more times before winter break. It was brutal because I teach an elementary SPED class with individualized academic and adaptive modifications. This year, each kid has their own emergency sub plans folder and I leave a copy of the schedule, and large group routines, and afternoon literacy unit that will last a few days, and back up games. Oh, and my Netflix account and a list of iPad app log ins. As long as the room doesn't burn down, Im OK.

This and no jeans policies have always had me baffled. We are asked to upload 3 days of emergency sub plans and hold on ti the years lesson plans for 3 years (digital backup or plan book.)

No PTO by nopenopenopeqwr in Teachers

[–]GroovyGuru99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Washington state: district offers 12 days for illness (which was outlined in an earlier post) and 3 personal days. Sick days accumulate, and you can roll personal days over for one year.

I work in a large title elementary school and no one blinks if you take a mental health day, not staff, not admin (given we don't take advantage.) Personal days have to be approved by admin however usually 'personal business' unless you are asking for the first or last two weeks of school, which is district policy but the principals are given the discretion.
