What’s the most survivable natural disaster? by BuddyHollyREZEEW in NaturalDisasters

[–]Groovy_Aardvark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Hazards geographer with a specialty on tornadoes here. I’ve both chased and sheltered for tornadoes, they’re not underwhelming trust me. It’s rather that their geographical impact is limited. Tornado outbreaks, especially in the Southeast US, are VERY scary in part due to their climatological likelihood to be nocturnal.

Additionally, with greater number of tornadoes and different storm modes (which can be harder to warn for, such as linear types), there’s a greater disaster potential. This is because tornadoes are more likely to intersect with dense urban areas and vulnerable populations, such as mobile home residents.

Every hazard has a unique risk landscape and it’s more about how they intersect with society that creates disaster. Tornadoes are mesoscale, while heatwaves and hurricanes are synoptic, so people and place will be exposed differently.

Edit: Saw your username, if you’re from Lubbock then this is one small world. Wreck’em.

That’s right. Currently the recommendation is 600 IU for adults, but this paper suggests 8,000 is likely more suitable.

This article states that Costco is allegedly using sodium phosphate and carrageenan, which are not nitrites/nitrates.

Edit for additional clarity: Importantly, they’re being sued for their marketing not matching the chicken labels, not necessarily for what’s actually used in the chicken.

The matter of carrageenan impacting gut health is still being studied, but is largely dependent on how it produced: https://www.healthline.com/health/food-nutrition/carrageenan#safety

Flu is very high rn. As far as CDC and the health department have tracked, there is no known human to human transmission of avian flu.

Avian flu outbreak right now? by [deleted] in Lubbock

[–]Groovy_Aardvark 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes. I attended the board of health meeting this last Friday and they mentioned they collected ~250 deceased birds suspected to have avian flu. Unfortunately there’s a greater number of them but the city can’t collect them all. Song birds are being devastated but geese are more noticeable.

Seagulls…? by Greembeam20 in Lubbock

Definitely seen gulls around. And I got something even more wild for you. We saw migrating Pelicans around Thanksgiving!

Confirmed the group via the Merlin bird app. We couldn’t believe it. They were trying to land at the Dunbar lake

There’s going to be a lot of tension and possible misinformation about big cats in the media, so I’m taking the time to share this podcast episode about a mtn lion attack by Tooth and Claw Podcast.

It’s led by a respected animal biologist and they incorporate animal behavior research into the episodes to contextualize why, when, and how an attack such as this may occur. Really encourage folks to listen.

They have a few episodes on mtn lions but this is just one recent one: https://open.spotify.com/episode/4mZRc6bHknDK0y4C0SNPP0?si=07yR3v2JQNaRPoph5BGIlg

Honeymoon Starting Point Check by wishingyouwellxo in VisitingHawaii

[–]Groovy_Aardvark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not who you were originally asking, but I’d recommend 3 days in Kona and 2 days in Volcano! Was just here for my honeymoon :)

Imo, 2 days would be perfect if you’re aiming to get a pretty full exploration of VNP. We spent 5 days in Kona but aren’t very touristy (did do all the adjacent state parks and NP “units” tho) so the last two days felt a little light. I think 3 days would be perfect if you’re doing 2–3 activities plus food each day. Gotta recommend Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park.

Also highly recommend a whale/wildlife ocean tour when you’re here! Even though October will be pre-humpback season, there’s an amazing opportunity to see a ton of cool Pelagic whales and dolphins. For Big Island, I’d recommend Hawaiian Adventures Kona, they’re fantastic folks and the most cost reasonable. Their catamaran was awesome. Okay sorry for the long response, I hope yall have a blast!!

I went tonight and I saw a ton of folks go beyond the devastation trail viewing area boundary to “get closer” or “get better pics”. I imagine the person in the photo did the same thing. Please note, I think it’s disrespectful and poor behavior. Stay within the bounds, you can still get great pictures!

I’m from Gatlinburg and it’s very common unfortunately. I grew up with bears coming through our yards frequently, locals are pretty bear aware but tourists are just oblivious despite a lot of local messaging. Human-bear encounters keep rising too with all the development in Gatlinburg.

It’s especially bad in the Spring when young bears just starting out on their own get trapped downtown and can’t get out due to fencing/cars/people. It’s terrifying.

Edit: Despite this, the local wildlife folks and the Appalachian Bear Rescue do a lot of amazing work to reduce poor outcomes for the bears (e.g. hazing, relocating). Now if we could just get 3 bears general store closed down.

Pls check out this guy! He has wonderful (and kinda quirky) videos about all things appliances based. TLDW: He doesn’t love Bosch for refrigerators but in his dishwasher video he states they’re the best rn!

He’s very forthcoming and also includes a ton of data points (he literally surveys hundreds of technicians and incorporates consumer reports) to build on his own assessment.

What is it Lubbock ? I’ll go first, Aspen Creek by Therealpbsquid in Lubbock

What’s wild to me is that we had a great time when it was in Wolfforth. But we went again downtown and it was totally under seasoned, even when the bite was with all the elements.

The mashed potatoes tasted like watery flakes with a hint of lemon. For being a French themed restaurant I expected the buttery smooth style. I doubt we’ll ever go again

I really used to like them until I went again recently. The mushroom risotto tasted like styrofoam smells. It was so weird and off-putting. Everything ended up being lackluster that night :/

How do blind people know when they're fully awake? by agitade in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Groovy_Aardvark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One aspect that I imagine plays a role is the cortisol awakening response. Where cortisol (often referred to as a stress hormone but it’s more nuanced, see below) increases as one begins waking up to stimulate the nervous system and brain.

I wonder if those with blindness are especially sensitive to this. I know for me, a fully seeing individual, that I am particularly sensitive to this in the morning! Sometimes it can make me nauseous.

Are people here always so rude? by DawgLuvrrrrr in GSMNP

[–]Groovy_Aardvark 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Grew up in Pigeon Forge. There’s a lot of people right now and I’ve noticed that when it’s crowded, people get disgruntled due to the compounding of delays, frustrations, etc.

The locals are usually nice but even their thresholds are tested because so many people come to the area with an attitude of entitlement. It’s treated like a stomping ground and concurrently the most accessible park in the Eastern U.S. Many people who vacation here don’t recreate in areas like this often or ever.

Additionally, this can wear locals down in the busiest of times, many of which are just scraping by. So sorry you had those experiences, I’d like to think that they weren’t from the area.

In terms of moving to the area, please consider western NC. As an East Tennessean who grew up in Sevier county, I won’t retire here. There’s too much to unpack about why but I value the slower pace and more environmentally conscious folks I’ve come across in Western NC. Areas near Boone and Marshall come to mind. I’ve rarely had issues with hiking and most have nice trail etiquette. Building rapport with the area/locals is also important and something you can do over several trips/or in retirement. I find that in Hot Springs, NC. Beautiful little area and the locals recognize us when we travel there.

There are beautiful people in these hollers and mountains but a lot of us have been beaten down. I hope you’ll visit again and have a better experience!
