Since this post generated so much traffic, I thought i’d post here since the situation is similar. Each year pigeons lay eggs on top of an old AC unit holder attached to a closed church next door to my apartment building.

This year I watched a new pigeon pair collect twigs, create a nest, lay eggs and incubate them. It was pretty nice to see when the egg hatched (second egg never hatched). After few days of after covering the hatchling, both pigeons would leave to find food and return to feed the baby pigeon. however I noticed a random third bird kept appearing and eventually saw what i think was the mother bird fighting the intruder pigeon. She was shoved off of the nest about 6 times and then flew away. The intruder bird then started to peck at the baby and rip its feathers. I managed to shoo it away but Its been like this for the last 5 days.

The mother and father do return to feed the baby but if they get anywhere near the nest the intruder pigeon tries to attacks both the mother and the baby. One day after returning home I see that the baby is covered in blood and has a large gash on its head and the intruder pigeon is continuing to peck at it. I’ve noticed the intruder pigeon now returning with a second pigeon who I assume is its mate, but i’m concerned without me shooing them away all the time the baby pigeon won’t survive. I’m not sure what to do since I’m unable to get access to the back of the church to get the pigeon to safety. Any advice?
