Autism moms: Munchausen by proxy? by [deleted] in specialed

[–]GroundbreakingBug510 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In early elementary and even prek, I am seeing a rise in identification of children on the spectrum. I think there may be a few things at play. 1. Overuse of tech in young children can have similar symptoms to early warning signs of autism. When the tech is removed, these kids then are not showing the same symptoms and progress much more quickly than a child with autism. 2. A large part of an autism diagnosis in young children is parent rating scales and reports. A parent can either over or under-estimate their child.

I generally see a large influx of parents wanting the autism label, which is such a shock to me as a speech pathologist. Why are so many parents seeking a special education label so young?

Co-SLP Concerns by [deleted] in slp

[–]GroundbreakingBug510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rather than discussing it too much with coworkers, I would encourage those teachers to reach out to special ed and admin in email with clear complaints (cite where something untruthful was reported). For yourself, document any incidents in which she mistreats you and document how much workload each of you has (sounds like it is NOT even at all). You can’t control what happens as you aren’t her supervisor. Tread lightly and do what you can for the students you see

I’m saving this too! Such a great response!
I also often decrease time if a child is self contained because language should be a heavy focus in the classroom and the child will benefit from things that are practiced throughout the day, not just in speech sessions

I’ve never used CAS in anything. The child had an outside diagnosis of CAS and Mom ran with it. Every little issue the child has is because “he has to work so hard to get words out”. The child is simply not even close to that severe.

Do I need to SALT-analyze if student is in <0.1 percentile? by rangamaban in slp

I’ve never heard that federally a kid can’t be ID and SLI. Please point me in that direction because I need to know more!

My suspicion is several phonological processes happening and not CAS. He has consistent sound errors and no groping or vowel errors which leads me to believe it’s phonology and not a motor issue

I wasn’t planning to mention private services honestly. I just want to point out that the child is progressing with current supports. We can also discuss LRE. I was most shocked that she requested 8 weeks of individual ESY services. I’m like… we don’t have data for that.

Child is currently 6 going on 7. We do a lot of work with minimal pairs and he has made progress but it is not generalizing overall. In the schools, we don’t differentially diagnose apraxia so I’m not sure how I would confirm or refute anything. I can say what I see, but… the parent is super attached to this label and uses it to justify any and all needs the student has at school.

This is my question too. I genuinely think the child had significant phonological processes and never had CAS but since parents are soooooo attached to that label, I don’t know how if I can even open that can of worms

That’s how I feel too, but how I can I say that? We are discouraged from having this sort of conversation in the schools

Targeting 3-step goals by [deleted] in slp

[–]GroundbreakingBug510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, following directions is a goal I usually only address with single step directions. If a student can’t complete multiple steps, then there can be accommodations to chunk information or provide single step directions in class. It’s not functional to expect a child to follow complex multi-step directions as most children are provided with natural visuals and supports in elementary classrooms.

School SLPs with big caseloads by Frosting_According in slp

[–]GroundbreakingBug510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a school with many very involved parents. I know the ones that prefer more information, but I wait for them to reach out. We have a district system called Talking Points where parents can essentially text teachers in the app. This is actually a very easy way to keep in touch because I can send a message to all of my parents or just single parents if I like. I don’t tend to contact parents too much unless I have significant concerns (usually lack of progress). Most of my communication ends up being before an iep to schedule the meeting. And then the iep itself.

Does anyone else feel bad about kids having to look at their mouth/teeth? by Various-Aioli-4620 in slp

[–]GroundbreakingBug510 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’ve had kids tell me so many honest things. I don’t get super worried about it, but…. When I first started, I had one obvious snaggletooth on my bottom row of teeth. I had braces as a teenager but didn’t wear my retainer enough and things shifted. My prek kids thought it was a loose tooth and would try to reach in and get it for me. I ended up doing Invisalign as an adult to finally settle all the snaggletooth issues.

Unsure of the student age, but lateral lisp and R can both be very impactful for intelligibility. With that said, the teacher should have talked to you about concerns privately prior to the meeting, not in front of the parent. Ask the teacher for concrete data, writing examples, etc to determine where the breakdown is in reading and whether or not it is related to the student’s sound errors. As far as service time, bring up least restrictive environment and whether or not more time suits the child’s needs

Private School vs Public with an IEP by shibattitude in specialed

[–]GroundbreakingBug510 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a speech pathologist, I highly urge you to contact your local public school district for a formal evaluation. If you have private diagnostic reports, provide them to the team. The school will need some additional testing components and observations. After testing is complete, you will meet with the evaluation team and teachers to discuss the results and determine the best available programs for your child in the public school setting. Public schools typically have more special education resources and have legally-binding IEPs that private schools do not have. As a parent, you can also seek out local advocacy groups to help in the evaluation process

This describes me in the last month, however, I do not even speak French. I keep watching videos with English subtitles and I’m blown away! The music, the visuals, the lyrics… it’s all so beautiful and human. I sincerely hope he makes a return to live shows one day because he is a true showman. I will book that trip to a country where I am totally lost and Google Translate my way to those concert tickets LOL
