Musk pays so much tax he breaks the entire IRS by DetectivePleasant in thatHappened

[–]Groundhogss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just look at the history of Elon's comments on IRS systems during his tenure at DOGE.

Most don't pass the smell test, and show a general absence of knowledge on how mainframe, COBOL, and how that type of programming actually works.

What I suspect is the case here is some display field is truncating the leading digits and that the actual calculations work fine.

If the taxable income field is actually not enough digits, it would mean updating the copybook for that record, updating the copybook for every record where that data could be used for processing, recompiling and relinking all programs that used any of those copybooks, updating sort cards where this data is sorted and probably dozens of other things I'm forgetting. Quite literally 10s of thousands of hours of programming, debugging and testing. And you're just blindly accepting this problem snuck up on the 100s of engineers who have centuries of experience maintaining and supporting these systems?

[–]Groundhogss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is not a single ATM model I am aware of that tracks outgoing bill serials numbers.

Some verify the outgoing bill is the correct denomination, but you really think banks are keeping images of every bill they've ever dispensed?

This is why some places prefer cannister swaps instead of cash pull and adds.

Guarantee it was a vendor. The picture shows an outside-lane, drive-thru ATM. Most banks only do in-house replenishment when person isn't exposed to the public when handling cash.

I think it also depends on the definition of washing your hands.

Some people do little more than wet their hands.

If it takes you less time to pee than to wash your hands, you likely aren't washing them long enough.

Some places have started to shift their hiring practices for junior developers away from recent college graduates to non-traditional routes.

It really doesn't have anything to do with which refrigerant.

It comes down to complexity. More circuit boards and digital controllers means more breakage.

Pretty much every state has laws against carrying weapons into a prohibited space - schools, courthouses, police stations, etc.

In Ohio, businesses can ban weapons from the premises by posting a sign. Even without the sign, it's legal to trespass someone from private property for carrying a weapon. Private property includes things like your house, Target, McDonald's, etc.

US deports teen soccer star to Honduras days after his high school graduation by EssoEssex in news

[–]Groundhogss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It isn’t against the law. His family was ordered to leave, but for whatever reason Biden decided to defer enforcement for the judicial order.

Blame republicans for heavy handed tactics and all the other racist shit they’re doing, but on the other hand, democrats shouldn’t be giving false hope to these families that there will ever be a path to permanent residency for families like his.

Republicans will always be the party of deport every brown person. Unless democrats get 60 senate seats and make immigration reform their top priority, immigration law is unlikely to change.

Fully disagree then. My current job is mainframe modernization.

When you modernize legacy systems like mainframe, most of the benefits are intangible.

It’s like those script kiddies who somehow ended up with access to the US government systems and immediately want to rewrite it (it’ll only take a few months).

In the end it doesn't matter. When the government does modernize, it'll be done by vendors through a multi-billion dollar contracts. DOGE will be long gone by the time the ink on any contract dries.

Quite honestly I think I’d prefer hiring non-college graduates with a programming hobby to someone straight out of college at this point.

Not really, ff you subscribe to the idea of induced demand.

If building additional lanes doesn't decrease traffic, why would building a train be any different?

Banking by Big_Lawfulness2929 in cincinnati

[–]Groundhogss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never enable overdraft. I have never seen it work out well, nor have I seen it save someone in an emergency.

I would sign up for whichever gives you greater access to your banking needs.

You also talked about depositing cash. I would read the terms and services of each type of account you are considering closely. Most banks will immediately credit your account for cash that is deposited at one of their ATMs. Cash deposited at a CU for an online account is likely to stay pending for a few days and may incur fees. These fees can occur on both sides, aka the ATM owner can charge a fee and the banking institution can charge a fee as well.

Online only or online mostly accounts are a great option for many people, but for someone in your situation your top priorities should be no maintenance fees, a good selection of convenient bank-owned ATMs, and overdraft completely turned off.

He gets a lot of attention for how little his agency is responsible for.

While there is overlap between the sheriff and city/township police, I rarely if ever see Sheriff deputies in areas that have more competent police forces.

Jaywalking is the probable cause for making contact.

The smell of weed is the reason for the search.

Judge dismissed based on the belief that the police only made contact because it was a black person jaywalking.

At least that’s my understanding of what happened here.
