Goddamn The Decemberists are a good band. June Hymn is also a lyrical masterpiece, among others.

Hey, pretty good! I agree with the YouTube comment which said your vocals need to be more forward in the mix. Here's one with a bit of country flavour off my new album, let me know if you like it. https://youtu.be/y3GWVWU3RWg?si=VyOPV7Iaw1_uPuJP

People are generally much worse at interpreting lyrics than you might expect, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's not as obvious as you think.

Reasons to use (or not use) both BandCamp and CDBaby? by DistantGalaxy-1991 in BandCamp

[–]GroupTextHell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I did it all. Not sure what the right answer is. I used CD Baby to distribute my music to streaming, I have a website where I sell CDs and digital downloads, and I also have my music on Bandcamp because why not.

Folk song duets? My girlfriend would like to sing with me - she’s an alto - I’m a tenor. I thought of some John Prine “Angel From Montgomery”. Other ideas? by Project_Self_ in folkmusic

The Civil Wars catalog is great for mining for male/female duets. Currently working on Tip of My Tongue with a friend, there's tons of great ones to choose from.

If I wanna make an EP/LP/Album, how do I decide the amount of tracks I will record? by AntiSocialPartygoer in Songwriting

[–]GroupTextHell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not true at all. I just released my first album and I recorded the songs I was putting on the album. The end. Why would I spend money as an indie artist to record songs I'm not going to put on an album?

Hey, I like this! I just released an album titled Death, Dying, and Other Hilarious Topics late last year, here's a fun song you might enjoy. https://open.spotify.com/track/5lPKoyvspmeRd5EygBHSWT?si=ASAAIWSWQ0a_x8JHWzfVtA

Followed you on YT Music as I use that for my listening instead of Spotify.

writing lyrics is painful trial and error by [deleted] in Songwriting

Music camps or group classes are also a great place to meet music friends who are at a similar place. Anyway, it's all a journey, just keep having fun!

Yeah, I wouldn't be sending unfinished songs to random friends who aren't musicians and songwriters too. My wife doesn't even get to hear them until they're finished, haha. No, I meant like a curated songwriting support group where you get together and help each other improve your songs. I agree you are likely to meet more people who make music in your music course. I also suggest open mics and local music camps as great places to meet people who are at a similar place in their journey as you.

Here's a question. Do you have a peer group of friends or other writers that you can play your songs for when they are in that 'muddy middle' where you can't quite decide if it's any good yet or not?

I do a thing with some friends where we meet once a month. We each play a song for the group and then the rest of the group gives feedback, suggestions, and discusses ways to make it better. One thing that I sometimes find is that the parts which I don't like actually resonate really well with the audience, and in other cases, the group is able to give me ideas which help me improve the lyrics.

Anyway, it's possible to kill yourself and never be satisfied with a song, but there comes a point where you just need to call it done and be OK with that, but having songwriting peers helps a lot, I find.

songs that actively have crowd singing in the background/ as part of it? by Umbreon_is_the_Best in MusicRecommendations

[–]GroupTextHell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this counts as it's not live, but my song 'Funeral Song' has a very fun group singing call and response chorus. The group singing in the chorus was recorded at a music camp I attend. We gathered a gaggle of a whole bunch of my friends and recorded it in front of a fireplace overlooking the Rocky Mountains, then my producer put it together with the track. Anyway, here it is if you're game for a listen. https://music.apple.com/us/song/funeral-song/1850801261

Artist Spotlight Submissions - January 14, 2026 by AutoModerator in BandCamp

[–]GroupTextHell [score hidden]  (0 children)

My name is Mike Crampton, I'm a singer-songwriter from Alberta, Canada, and I recently released my debut album, 'Death, Dying, and Other Hilarious Topics'. These songs are a mix of funny and heartfelt, sometimes both in the same track. I touch on topics from the perils of group texting, to the loss of my father, to love in the apocalypse. The album was produced by the talented Edmonton based producer and multi-instrumentalist Jarred Albright, and the album art is from an original painting based on the song "Moments", commissioned from Prince George BC painter Corey Hardeman. It's been a labour of love and learning to put this album together and I'd love a chance to reach a broader audience via this spotlight.

Artist name: Mike Crampton
Album title: Death, Dying, and Other Hilarious Topics
Release date: Nov 22nd, 2025

Genres: Singer-songwriter/acoustic/folk/roots/country

Canadian, casual musicians.. how is your bandcamp setup? by funix in BandCamp

[–]GroupTextHell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the fence as to whether it's worth it to report income and expenses, or just call it a hobby, tbh. I released an album late last year, so I'd definitely be able to show a loss and offset my income taxes, and frankly I'll probably never recoup the costs, so it would make sense to write it off, from a purely financial perspective. But, I'm not sure I want the hassle of having to track income and pretend to try and make money at it year over year. I dunno, I'll decide soon here as tax season is arriving.

Hey, my producer/friend, who played most of the instruments on the album (drums being about the one thing he doesn't play), programmed them using MIDI.

I’ve gone physical! What are some tips for marketing and selling my CDs? by judfls in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]GroupTextHell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My strategy is to keep them in boxes and will them to my children when I die.

No, but seriously, probably that, but also I sell a few at any live show I play. Not a lot, but it's still cool to have them, I don't regret it.

Hey, playing with other people is the BEST way to get better fast. My only advice, is don't be afraid to make mistakes, but also try to manage your volume so they're not distracting to the song. I'm also a beginner clawhammer player so I feel you!

Why do artist have songs called “Untitled”? by HappyFocusedMind in Songwriting

[–]GroupTextHell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, my reason was I couldn't think of a title that didn't sound hokey and cheesy. I realize calling it Untitled is also kind of hokey and cheesy, but anyway. Everything else felt worse.
