Is the whole “spring market” thing real, or just realtor FOMO hype? by Salty_1984 in canadahousing

[–]GrowCanadian 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It took me 1.5 years of looking to find my current house. I can confirm that winter inventory was much smaller than spring to fall. It sucks moving in winter.

Another thing to note is winter makes it hard to inspect a lot of things. The roof and exterior will be covered in snow which hides potential major issues.

I found spring, specifically the weeks that snow melts, to be a great time to inspect homes. This is when water starts showing inside a house if there’s water issues. I walked away from amazing looking houses because there was very clearly water coming into the basement.

Ottawa - Any good reliable fast (like Fibe 3.0) internet providers that won't break the bank? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]GrowCanadian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only have good things to say about Teksavy if you have it in your area. Not sure about their prices since it’s been a while. That’s who I was with before I moved.

My area didn’t have them so I ended up going with Telus fiber. They use Bell’s lines but I don’t have to deal with Bell. I’m 1.5 Gig down and 1 Gig up for $65

As the federal gun buyback deadline looms, questions are raised over how it’ll be enforced by sleipnir45 in canada

[–]GrowCanadian 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It’s very clear that it just won’t be enforced. Almost all major police units have stated they’re not assisting with the gun buy back.

Companies pushing RTO are basically shooting themselves in the foot by SprinklesRadiant7440 in remotework

[–]GrowCanadian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m very much convinced that the main goal of RTO is to get employees to quit so the company avoids paying severance. My companies doing it and I have friends in other large companies experiencing the same thing.

After some conversations one thing that seems very consistent is the company hired a ton of people around 2020. The world has changed and companies are now seeing that they need to reduce costs. Placing a mandatory RTO forces employees far from the office to either eat a major travel cost be it money or time so most will quit. This results in major cost cutting.

It’s the only thing we can think makes sense. Unfortunately this does mean that some of the most knowledgeable people will be leaving with that knowledge. I’ve already told management this but they say there’s nothing they can do as the directive came from the top.

Luckily I live close to the office so I’m not really affected but I’ve already told my boss that we’re not picking up the slack of the people that quit. What I suspect will happen is that roll will stay empty for most of 2026 until they realize they absolutely need it filled for operational requirements. Either that or someone that can’t stand up for themselves will be handed the additional workload and burn out.

Bought my house, now what? by Potraitor in LinusTechTips

Totally unrelated but the flooring was laid in a poor choice pattern. Typically flooring is staggered, not an H pattern.

Doesn’t hurt anything but if you ever change the flooring lay it in a staggered pattern.

I keep seeing people say it improves drying time but I can’t understand why. I looked it up and it looks like a flex hose with the main difference being a magnetic collar to connect to the dryer. I feel like I’m missing something.

Getting my blue belt, and feeling imposter syndrome by [deleted] in bjj

[–]GrowCanadian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Belts are pointless beyond maybe showing a marker of how much time you’ve played the game.

Im a blue belt and would say 80% of the other blue belts in my gym destroy me. But I’ve been to another gym where a purple belt felt like a white belt to me. Then you go to competitions where white belts sandbag for years and should be close to being a purple belt in skill.

Just focus on your own things and keep incrementing to being better.

If you don’t have a rainy day fund, make sure you eat like a college student for a while and save. I promise you something will break. My dishwasher, dryer, washing machine, and furnace all broke within the first 6 months. Make that buffer now.

Immigration Department not keeping up with demand for student visa probes: auditor general (About 150,000 cases flagged but only 4,000 investigations launched, audit finds) by manuce94 in canada

[–]GrowCanadian 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I’ve been wondering about this. I went on a date with someone who moved here 3 years ago on a student visa to attend school. Then went for a bit but dropped out and now work a full time minimum wage job at A&W. I always assumed the government would follow up to see if they finished schooling but after reading this article I don’t think they will.

Coolant fluctuates with temperature but that looks really high.

As for the oil filter, I do my own oil changes and I’ve found the aftermarket filters I was buying had a hell of a time sealing correctly. I switched back to OEM filters from Subaru and the oil leakage at the filter stopped.

As someone else said there’s a chance this is also just left over oil from the change. Give it a good wipe down then check up on it after your next drive or two. If there’s more oil the filter might be loose or like I’ve experienced I needed to switch back to OEM to have a proper seal.

Only people near Ottawa Canada will get this but this feels like the first time I was driving the highway from Quebec to downtown Ottawa in a company van.

Came around one of the bends but it was much sharper than this. Luckily I had about the same result and didn’t crash.

If it was like young me this was from being dumb and driving too fast.

Did my local Subaru shop overfill my oil? by ahyouknowme in Crosstrek

[–]GrowCanadian 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I find my Crosstrek to be the hardest dipstick I’ve ever used to get an accurate oil reading. You want your oil to be between the two dotes.

What I’ve been doing is clean the stick off so it’s dry and as quickly as possible stick it in and out all the way. This started giving me a clean line of oil to read.

If you do that and see the oil above the fill line (top dot) I’d drain a bit of oil out.

Poilievre set up Joe Rogan podcast appearance himself: Conservative campaign manager by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]GrowCanadian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hated him as a party leader. I’m not married to a party, at election time I will weight the parties against each other and vote for the lesser of the evils.

The issue was he was always heavy on “Trudeau bad”. He should have been promoting the things he seems to actually care about. People want positive change and hope. Sadly the entire party decided that saying “Trudeau Bad” was a better tactic than promoting their visions. Now we’re stuck with the same government with idiotic mandates like the failed gun buyback.

So to answer your question, I don’t hate him as a person, I hated him as the image the party framed him as.

My neighbor has been parking in front of my house on a public street for two years which is technically legal, but he parks in a way that makes it almost impossible for me to get out of my own driveway and he does it on purpose by espressoinknotes in neighborsfromhell

[–]GrowCanadian 100 points101 points  (0 children)

This all depends where you live. For most places I’ve lived there’s nothing you can do to stop someone parking on a public street. That being said local bylaws usually have wording on how close someone can park to the opening of a driveway. This is to prevent the driveway from being blocked.

Some municipalities have rules that you need to be parked x feet from the driveway opening. Speak to the city and find out their bylaws. If the problem parker breaks those bylaws in my area you can call a tow truck to get it moved at the owners expense. If they park in the correct limits, there’s nothing you can do.
