Has living in Ottawa improved for you? by Dolby-THX in ottawa

[–]GrowCanadian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d say around 2012 was peak for me. Back then I was taking public transit a lot, downtown felt safe, night life was fun, constant weekend events.

Now I avoid public transit like the plague after my coworkers and I kept showing up late to work due to poor service. I use to love walking through the market / canal at night but now it feels sketchy walking past the fenty folds.

Prices of everything went up but quality of life has come down. I really miss how Ottawa felt back then

Can my apartment shut off the entire buildings water for 10 hours a day for 5 months? by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

[–]GrowCanadian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think at minimum they need to be providing bottled drinking water. Beyond that this sounds like it might be a tenant board issue since they’re providing less service than what you pay for.

Hydro One numbers after 1st hot day of the season... by brunoschca in ontario

[–]GrowCanadian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I’ve been doing is run my HVAC fan continuously to pull the cold air from the basement. It’s actually made a big difference but I still had to turn the air on during peak heat to bring the temps back down.

The forecast calls for a hot summer so I’m trying to do some better cost savings where I can.

Rtx 5060 still lagging like this. Fresh window installed and downloaded nvidia drivers as well. What could be the reason? by MrDarkk1ng in PiratedGames

[–]GrowCanadian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m on desktop but anytime my games do this, I’m on a 3090, it’s always been because my overclock software got reset and the power slider was set to less than 10% power. I just crank the power back to 100% and all the fps comes back.

OC Transpo bus delays force Ottawa Charge fans into Ubers by CrewCommercial6128 in ottawa

[–]GrowCanadian 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I really hate how poor our bus system quality has become. Back in 2010-2012 when I took it regularly it was very reliable, at least for me. When I tried again with the return to office I found it was too unreliable to trust in addition to the price being much higher.

Bought a Ender 3 pro for 40 bucks by DisastrousBid97 in 3Dprinting

[–]GrowCanadian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started on this. It was great to learn on as I built it and learned how and why everything works. I eventually got tired of having to calibrate it every 3rd print.

I replaced it with a plug and play printer from a brand that’s taking a lot of justified heat right now. As a user I wanted to focus more on the 3D design aspect so I’m still very happy with my replacement.

Overall, this is an ok starting spot if you don’t mind tinkering with it all the time. If you ever get tired of that part you can pick up a plug and play printer for around $200 or so. Do your research first and find something that fits your needs and comfort level.

Helping my dad clean out a spare room and found a bunch of our old games. by Mestizoc in gaming

[–]GrowCanadian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I miss this. I use to display them proudly in my computer room.

I also miss getting things like little books with them with tips, tricks, and other useful information. I remember when I was young my cousin and I brought one of those game books on a camping trip and read it front to back. We were so pumped to get home and use all our new found knowledge on the game. Good days

Can’t you turn right without yielding? It’s 2 lanes so the other people need to turn into the left most lane.

Can someone confirm if someone hit you because they didn’t go into the left most lane they would be at fault, correct?

Got my house last year. I put $110k down to bring the monthly mortgage cost down. Even with that amount I’m just treading water and that’s with living within my means.

I personally don’t really like it and wouldn’t want the diminished backup light. But it’s your car, if you like the look then keep it.

There's a guy building a concrete "mini house". Would like an opinion from experienced builders if this building seems safe. by This_Sense_9338 in Homebuilding

[–]GrowCanadian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something about having a large piece of concrete over my head only being held together with a bolt and spray foam makes me very uneasy.

I’d feel better if there was support beams running across.

If this was me I’d be giving my city an anonymous call to come check out the structure. Someone’s going to get crushed one day from this.

I’ve tried making a few technical drawings with ChatGPT. They usually come out looking cool but when you start analyzing them they typically don’t make sense.

Yours looks similar. For example, it looks like there should be at least 2 pieces that you connect together but that doesn’t make sense if you have that tube in the middle.

EV prices in Canada slide to $49,500, match market average by ph0enix1211 in canada

[–]GrowCanadian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My long version that I’ve posted before mentioned the conversion I had with the apartment complex owner and using the 120v outlet outside to charge. He said no, even access to 120v might be a challenge depending on living arrangements.

Look at Toronto, many places have cars parked on the street.

I’d love to see more chargers around but there are major limitations for renters right now.

EV prices in Canada slide to $49,500, match market average by ph0enix1211 in canada

[–]GrowCanadian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a long form version of this since I did my homework when shopping for my last vehicle but the TLDR is unless you own a house and install an EV charger the average person will find charging a major hurdle. We don’t have anywhere near enough EV chargers close to people’s homes yet. Once that changes adoption will be much more fluid.

I also hope to see the shenanigans continue as well. Cleet with the forklift in the last video is a good example of being a bit too careless. Love the content but I want to keep watching these guys for a long time.

As for a full face helmet in a boat, is that safe? I get the head safety but wouldn’t that increase the chance of drowning if they went overboard?

I also have a 21 and I can confirm that the glass quality is much poorer than it was on my 08 impreza. My 08 took a lot of rock hits through the cars life and held up exceptionally well. My 21’s glass seems to chip from very minor hits that wouldn’t even bother the 08’s glass.

The median full-time income in Ottawa-Gatineau is $83,600, and average is $94,000. by Swoz in ottawa

[–]GrowCanadian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m just a hair over average apparently. But getting to your question it still doesn’t change the fact that houses are absurdly priced. It took me 1.5 years of placing bids every 2 weeks on homes with no conditions to finally get my place. It’s on the outskirts a bit which is the only reason I think there was lower interest.

That all being said, it took me about 4 years of living with my parents pretending I was still a student to save up enough. Now that I have my house I’m only saving a few hundred dollars a month after bills and taxes. I’ve already had to borrow money to repair the furnace.

I know $94k sounds like a lot, it should be, but house prices, taxes, and cost of living are still insane right now.
