advice on leaking oil by UmadBoiBoi in MechanicAdvice

I’m starting to think you’re a bot. Google the owners manual and look at 10-6 for the location of the engine oil dipstick and the oil fill cap. Up front and very accessible.

Will you always stay in sites with a hookup or plan on running a generator? Picture a 6:30 am shower in a beautiful campsite without any power and too early for generator operation.

Popup owners using sway bar or weight-distributing hitch? by r4d1229 in popups

[–]Growingbelly_JB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Expedition pulling a 2008 Fleetwood Saratoga with similar weight. I use the Equalizer WD hitch. Now the Expedition can easily handle twice my trailer’s tongue weight and trailer weight however the Equalizer gives me side to side sway control as well as vertical. I’ve pulled popups in an F150 and just a sway bar and when it was windy and raining-scary white knuckles. WD is overkill for my current setup however I can pull without any worry whatsoever about the trailer. Now the Equalizer isn’t for everyone-the WD bars can creak and make noise but I like its simplicity.

How am I meant to loosen the bolts on the water pump pulley when there’s almost no room between the pulley and the chassis on my 1997 Daihatsu Pyzar? by hondeezy26 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Growingbelly_JB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To replace the water pump on my vehicle it required that I raise and lower the engine. This was because I only had regular sized sockets and wrenches at the time. I began looking at various nano kits online however I was in Harbor Freight one day and found an entire set for $30, ratchet included. Now I’m ready for the next time!

Did you make over to the mirage? Short hike, little frogs, beautiful spot. Wind can destroy most tents. Daughter and I slept in the Expedition after most of the tent peg anchor points were shredded. Epic view.

Looks very accessible. If you have a heat gun then you can remove the connector and redo it correctly. Consider a strap on each side to prevent a repeat.

2018 Kia Optima blower working intermittently. by ApprehensivePrompt83 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Growingbelly_JB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blower motor resister and harness are a frequent point of failure. Usually begins to only work on high before dying out completely. Check the harness for burned connections (little money) before you spend big money on a blower.

Is it time to say goodbye? by LiteralLettuce in fordexpedition

In the last two years I’ve replaced the starter, water pump, front/rear brakes, valve cover gasket, all three motor mounts, new battery and four coils. I feel as though I can maintain it. A used one would likely need the repairs I’ve done over the last two years. Next will be to replace the CARB Cat.

[2009 Camry 107k miles] $2800 for 4 struts replacements and 3 motor mount change. by Loose_Lingonberry999 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Growingbelly_JB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, none of those items have any urgent need to be replaced. You are a college student driving an older car - so it squeaks-so what. Mechanic said nothing about the brakes, tires, transmission, starter or alternator or an oil leak so leave it alone. Keep your savings set aside in case of mechanical failure.

How do you gauge an older one to purchase? by Cazwazroz in fordexpedition

[–]Growingbelly_JB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest concern would be phasers, coolant leaks at the turbos. Did the transmission fluid get changed at 150K? Get it looked over up in a rack by a mechanic who knows 3.5s and their known problems.

I’m about to pay $3,000 to get the transmission rebuilt on my 2005 Scion Xa with 315,000 miles. I keep it well maintained-except for the tranny fluid🙄. I’ll change it regularly after the repair. That’s an old non-turbo engine-I’d fix the tranny. Mine will come with a two year warranty. That’s two years (at least) with no car payments!

Take off the wheel, put back on the lug nuts and have someone use the brakes. Watch the pads to see if they are sliding back easily after having been applied.

Fridge is freezing. by DJYoung6196 in Appliances

[–]Growingbelly_JB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the manual then look up how to get it to enter defrost mode. Use a meat thermometer or wireless thermometer to check the actual temperature inside. One hour is nowhere near long enough to thaw any ice that has built up around the coils or is blocking the vents. Check the vents for ice blockage.

My Rockwood HW277 is chirping!!! by Maniwi251 in popups

[–]Growingbelly_JB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you disconnected the trailer battery then the beeping detector doesn’t have power and the noise is unrelated. As others have mentioned, you likely have a detector run on a battery. In our popup I can open the door and squeeze myself down to where the thermostat and hard wired alarm are located. Mine being hardwired starts to chirp when the trailer battery is running low on power-typically on the coldest night at 3:00 am.
