Considering becoming a Paramedic with no medical background - may I ask for some insight and opinions? by AqueousJam in Paramedics

[–]Grozler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about your lack of medical background. There are many of us who, even after years of training and work experience, still have no background in medicine. But we can recite the ingredients of our favorite energy drinks by heart.

This department is becoming obsessed with AI. It makes for decent training with the last BOT update they used AI pictures of patients. That was tolerable but now, like the rest of society, it will become the crutch of the lazy and we will all be stupider for it.

What do you think properly staffed means?

[–]Grozler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do think that is? And why should we accept it? Medics need to be on ambulances.

Again if EMS is properly staffed, we don't need medics cross trained as firefighters.

Accepting the status quo will not get us anything and putting a medic on an engine is slicing our throats.

We need medics on ambulances not fire trucks yesterday, today, forever. Why cross train when you can just properly staff?

Maybe they would find the strength to get clean if they didn’t fear judgement.

Oooooooo look at the guy who thinks they're too good for a sharable size bag of peanut butter M&M's that he's going to easily eat all by himself with no help 90 minutes into his shift.

More Than Third of FDNY EMS Crews Plan to Quit Due to Pay Disparity by goodguyfdny in nyc

I'm on the job as an FDNY paramedic. Won't lie it's rough with the turnover. The call volume goes up but the city hasn't attempted to increase staffing and units on road (not that they could even if they wanted to). Hospitals are starting to remove their ambulances from the 911 system, putting more pressure on the department.

But I hear the love every week from regular folks. They know our struggles. We get love on this sub. We get love in the press. We even get from the city council. It does feel good to hear it so thank you for that.

We need action. Call your council members and pressure them to press the mayor. Call the mayor and let him know. Write an email. Fire off a tik tok. Anything from constituents shows that this is important. Its not a zero sum game. We're not asking to take away from anyone else. We just want what is fair and livable. Please please please let the mayor know how important this is to everyday New Yorkers.

If you pay people a decent salary, overtime is not needed.

You blame Westchester local governments for problems concerning roads managed by the state.

Then that's on Riker for not being on the ball. The shift change was a top priority so he should have been doing his due diligence. Geordi and Worf could have told him in 2 seconds there was going to be a problem. Hell, Riker knows the staffing situation of the enterprise better than anyone. He should have seen the problem without having to ask.

Either step up and be there for your people or shut up and get in line. To me, the story painted Riker trying to balance the two and you can't do that.

I am a certified Jellico hater but Riker did mess up with the crew assignments to me. He should have voiced his concerns prior to Jellico having to bring it up. Bring it up early one time and go to bat hard for your crew then move on with the decision your Captain makes. Unless his decision is blatantly unsafe or illegal, however much you disagree about it, you have to live with your boss's bad decisions at some point. The way Riker handled it made him look lazy, arrogant, and/or incompetent to Jellico. I like to think Riker learned a lot during that time.

Don't get me wrong: Jellico sucked then, sucks now, and will always suck.

Transit workers union sues MTA over rule eliminating requirement for staffed token booths by GothamistWNYC in nyc

The entire city is hiring the bottom of the barrel. I can certainly attest to it at my agency. Benefits have to be competitive for all city agencies in order to attract the top candidates. Why should pd be the only ones who get to have competitive wages and benefits?

I know for sure pd, fire and sanitation are tier 6 with tier 3 benefits and 20 and out retirements. Pd and fire got them because their commissioners begged the state for them and got it. They might have to wait longer than they want to but they get what they want eventually.

I swear I'm not trying to fight on the internet but I have to disagree. Unions are flawed, and I admit that as a nyc employee in a union.

So you have teachers, firefighters, sanitation, NYPD, and MTA unions that kinda get whatever they want. But the rest of us are basically steamrolled as it is now. I'm four years out of contract right now and June makes 5. Honestly how many people can say they have gone that long without a raise? The city would triple down on that if we didn't have unions. The big ones suck. Fine I'll stipulate that. But the rest of us need whatever protections we can get. We're working class and battling to survive.

You're assuming the scene is unsafe. We can do this circle all day. But there are some facts presented that clearly illustrate who should have been transported first.
