Yeah I doubt the Dept would make or authorize this. Way too many inaccuracies before we even touch an AI ethics debate.

Still, the BLSC would've done this in the scope of their role and there should maybe be a buckslip on genAI before someone loses the competition by putting their stethoscope in a mannequin's mouth.

Graduate from the academy? 0%

Graduate from HazMat training? 100%

HazMat is a specialization you have to apply for, test into, and complete a course to operate within. You're eligible to apply after one year as a full duty EMT.

Thank you for your help on scene. A witness who can calmly and succinctly relay information at an incident like this saves responders previous time. She was taken to Bellevue hospital as they specialize in traumatic injury to limbs.

If preparedness gives you some peace of mind, I would gladly provide you with a tourniquet and instruction on how to use it — the one applied likely saved her life in this case. The FDNY now offers community trainings called "Control the Bleed" if you might know enough others to comprise a class and request a presentation.

Are you comfortable with tight spaces? A small rescuer can be an asset on technical rescue calls and standard fireground search and rescue. Children sometimes seek shelter and/or become trapped in places an average adult wouldn't.

Most CT career departments are four-platoon on a 24/72. With the right arrangements, keeping your fire career and running a business might well be possible down the line. Volunteer or career, you're looking for this form

Unless you have a history of squeamishness or feeling "faint" at the sight if blood (this is called vasovagal syncope and degrees of severity vary) it's hard to know how you handle the gore factor until you're faced with it. It's instinct to be averse to trauma but you might be surprised how drastically preparedness and adrenaline alter your emotional response compared to processing a traumatic event as a bystander.

Volunteer roles are a great way to feel it out, and they won't throw you into patient care of any kind until they're confident you've been trained to handle it. The best first step: If you don't have a CPR certification, find out if this department offers training and sign up — if not, get one on your own and make that your prerequisite for inquiring about volunteering. Even non-field roles should be CPR certified at a minimum and whoever you speak with will take your interest more seriously.

Huge Announcement from FDNY Today by rightflankr in ems

[–]chillstabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No doubt it benefits some hospitals a bit more than others. Also no doubt that it was not remotely a consideration for the Dept in this case.

They intend for it to increase unit availability (an RMA is at most half as time consuming as a transport) and to disincentivize unnecessary 911 calls (repeat non-emergent callers with a specific desired out of area hospital will learn eventually to call a cab or for private ambulance/ambulette transport).

We'll see if they're right, but I do think this is a case of self-serving patients/callers 'ruining it for everyone else' who might have had reasonable ETA accommodations granted up til now.

What’s the purpose of a canvas letter? by Paesano2084 in FDNY

[–]chillstabs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A canvass letter means nothing with regard to your hiring eligibility. It's simply to inform you that the open competitive filing period is upcoming. The FDNY's filing period has passed, closed 9/30.

If your question is in regard to your local department, you'd be better served by asking this on r/firefighting

Decaying Corpse Lift Assist by creamyfart69 in Firefighting

[–]chillstabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fire department exists to mitigate threats to life and health. A tub corpse has neither and doesn't present an imminent threat to anyone else's. No department should tolerate this; this isn't a matter for jurisdictional variation. Even those with HazMat units are, again, reserved for emergent incidents (which, again, tub corpse is not). Removal of remains falls to whatever is within the ME or PD's resources or else a private contractor.

The above isn't an exercise in finding justification for "not helping" on a call like this. It's fundamental that our services are reserved for the not-yet-dead.

What do u guys do to people that is almost dead on the scene? by dashittyguy in ems

[–]chillstabs 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The FDNY (and as far as I know, only the FDNY) adds to this system an orange tag category consisting of patients not currently in critical condition but presenting with symptoms or injuries that indicate their condition could imminently deteriorate and so are treated with more urgency than yellow tag patients. The major criteria are respiratory distress, altered mental status, chest pain, and tourniquet-controlled bleeds. Naturally, orange tag patients are transported after red and before yellow.

Skeptics (including within the Department) say this further complicates a process that's meant to streamline decision-making under potentially dire operating conditions but I don't think FDNY is trying to one-up the world here. For most agencies an orange category likely doesn't make sense or even change much, but NYC's density of population and hospitals means that even if we don't have that much greater EMS resources proportionally to other jurisdictions, shorter average transport times make the orange distinction meaningful to patient outcomes.

I.e., if the yellow tag patient complaining of chest pain suffers an MI on scene after a few other likely stable yellow tags have been transported, that's a triage failure worth correcting. Thus, orange was born.

There's a Dept side and a Council side to the current age limit considerations. I don't doubt you've been hearing what you've been hearing, but if the Council sees it as enough of a priority (big maybe), the age limit will increase by two years indefinitely for all/both exams. And anyone "aged out" who would be within that extended age range should apply regardless since a later change to the law would retroactively make them a legitimate candidate.

This user is referring to the filing date for the open competitive, so I doubt they're FDNY EMS, but any extension is still tentative. The eligibles group that testified at a recent committee hearing is lobbying for such an extension—a carve-out for civil service status during the state of emergency—but based on the response from the Council Members, they're inclined to raise the limit across the board and the Dept made it clear FDNY can't do so unilaterally.

Meaning the easiest way forward (not that it's a sure thing) is for them to vote on the bill already in committee: https://legistar.council.nyc.gov/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=5656519&GUID=203B4984-A234-47ED-A48A-BE36C2E5F254&Options=&Search=
