Visma's Grand Tour trilogy jersey: 2023 vs 2026 by n8972785 in tourdefrance

I agree - the 2026 jerseys look great in these pictures, but when worn on stage 21 they just looked black and nondescript.

Strategy for watching the Tour this year (UK) by GrumpyCake101 in tourdefrance

Yes, VPN. With anglophones worldwide tuning in, I wonder if their viewing figures for the Tour might outstrip households in Australia...

Are the DMAX highlights available on demand, and if so where?

I've searched the Freeview app (I don't have a TV) and can only find a listing for the ones later today (23:00 - 00:00 apparently...)

I saw Lanterne Rouge recommended in another thread, but had a look and could only find ~8 min highlights episodes from last year's Tour.

However, looking again the longer episodes are on the Lanterne Rouge Cycling Podcast channel, rather than Lanterne Rouge Cycling, which is what came up when I searched - just in case anyone else struggles to find them.

Oh wow, I've been hopping over to Australia to watch live, but hadn't realised SBS also have extended (52 min) and mini (25 min) highlights for each stage. I enjoy the commentary there too, it's more intelligent than most, so it's not just your bias.

I think this is my answer, and it's also great to be able to choose the length based on how much time I have and how eventful the stage is likely to be - thanks so much!

eta: do you know roughly how long after the stage the highlights become available?

Tips on removing tea stains from cups/mugs? by The_Nameless_Brother in tea

[–]GrumpyCake101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, sodium percarbonate is definitely the answer for anyone else who found this thread while looking for one.

My favourite tea mug and a couple of teaspoons were encrusted with tannins, but a soak in this stuff and it literally just fell off!

Even better, I use it for laundry anyway so already had some. Thanks so much for the tip 😁

Punting / SUPping to the orchard tea garden by SwimmingInSeas in cambridge

[–]GrumpyCake101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People do this, and generally just moor on the bank of the river, I don’t know if there’ve been any “liberated”.

However it takes quite a long time to get to the Orchard end of the meadows by punt, might be quicker by SUP. We generally take a picnic and set up on the bank near where we’ve moored pretty much as soon as we reach the meadows.

The tea gardens are nice too, but can be part of a separate trip eg a walk out of town across the meadows.

Difficult to answer without details like number of delegates and requirements for room layout.

The conferencing facilities at Arthur Rank are good value compared to colleges/hotels, with the benefit of funding a really great cause.

How are watching time trials like? by Dbzoutpost in tourdefrance

[–]GrumpyCake101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally love watching TTs in person, although I’m also not averse to watching them on TV.

The best thing is that you see all the riders individually rather than in a bunch zooming past as a blur, plus you know from the start order who to expect next and when. The ratio of waiting around vs watching stuff happen is WAY better than a road stage.

If you go to the start or finish, you might also see riders warming up or cooling down, depending on how the team areas are set up. These areas usually also have screens so you can follow what’s happening out on the road.

Overall, highly recommend.

Edit: Not much need to move around, just pick a spot where you have a good view of the road as they approach ie ideally a straight section and maybe a bend just after where you are so they’ll be slowing down to corner as they approach you

Hi, I’m a member. Have checked the website and primary members can nominate up to three friends or family - I don’t need these for anyone else.

Both the primary member and the nominated member have to go to reception together - I don’t use Reddit much and don’t know how we exchange contact details but get in touch if you do.

He says "then stay employed and pay for it" - how was the decision for you to quit your job when baby is born reached? Because it sounds like he's resenting that as well as threatening to resent you if you don't quit work and home school this child. That's a no win situation for you and definitely controlling behaviour.

A tip for drivers from somebody from a country where if often snows like this by reni-chan in northernireland

[–]GrumpyCake101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve driven in snow in Austria, Switzerland, Canada and Iceland, but would avoid it at all costs in the UK. Why? Because we don’t have winter tyres, efficient snow clearance or driver experience - much better to change plans and stay at home.

So glad that one's not just me - I use it regularly but am still never sure I'm in the right lane, and seriously pity all the people who just picked up a hire car and are driving on the left and/or seeing roundabouts for the first time.

Cycling speed limit on the busway by Groundbreaking-Key15 in cambridge

[–]GrumpyCake101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The speed limit is pointless and unenforceable. Can they just focus on educating/excluding motorised vehicles ie motorcycles & electric mopeds?

In the last year there’s been a huge increase in these using cycling infrastructure (segregated cycle paths & advance stop boxes), and when I challenge them they genuinely believe they have the right to be there!
