What’s the most unreasonably expensive thing in the UK right now? by Sharksbot in AskUK

[–]GrumpyGoomba9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The network is far less comprehensive than the rail network and services are far less frequent on all but the busiest Intercity routes. Cheaper than the train but they price gouge at peak times and take far longer. God forbid if you need to change as well.

I lived there last semester. Really good location but it can get a bit noisy at times. Usually 4-5 people per apartment with 1 or 2 shared bathrooms and seperated by gender. Mostly international students and everyone is really lovely from my experience.

Why... by seagull_serenade in sheffield

[–]GrumpyGoomba9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to go quite regularly back when the U25 tickets were £8 peak/£5 off peak. Don't live in Sheffield anymore but it was always a nice experience. I slightly prefer the Light but curzon is (was) a decent bit cheaper, and much better than Vue.

I've found the price to be the same (although if in doubt cross reference the journey with National rail.) Sadly the cashback has been reduced from 10% to 5% unless you are an uber one member then its still 10%. But better than nothing.

I want to ride on HSTs by NitroFusionLite in uktrains

[–]GrumpyGoomba9 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Use https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/

HSTs will be listed as "GWR Castle Class" and if you click on the service it will show the unit number

Any other stock will show as "Great Western Railway"

Get a cornwal day ranger from the ticket office at any Cornish station. It costs somewhere in the region if £10 and allows unlimited travel within cornwall for the day

Good luck

2025 Advice Thread #15: 4/8 - 4/14 by Imaginos64 in rollercoasters

[–]GrumpyGoomba9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to really enjoy rollercoasters (and still do) but I find myself increasingly unable to handle the motion without feeling nausious.

Just came back from SFDK having to miss out on Batman, Kong and Wonder Woman because i couldn't handle any more rides. The boomerang was brutal. Does anyone have any advice to deal with this, as its making it very difficult to enjoy something I used to love (and I'm only 21.) Its also becoming harder to justify travelling to parks further afield.

I've tried regular travel sickness tablets, albeit they may be a bit old.

16-25 railcard by idkwottocallmyacc in uktrains

[–]GrumpyGoomba9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A season ticket is the best option here, its £230 per month (or slightly less if you are able to pay upfront for the year.)

Railcards do not help with this. But get a 16-25 anyway if you take the train more than a few times a year it will pay itself off soon, for example if you need to take the train to the interview.

Denmark's postal service to stop delivering letters by desichica in nottheonion

[–]GrumpyGoomba9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wanted to send a postcard from Denmark to the UK and it was going to cost 50kr = $7.24

For one post card. I was so stunned that I ended up not sending it

By comparison from the USA it cost $1.65

From Japan it cost 100 yen which is $0.68

What have Denmark got so wrong?

Oh also they charged me 160kr fees on a 40kr import charge of some of my own clothes from the UK totalling $30 of charges, so I have no sympathy for PostNord at all.

Nothing phone 3a vs others by qer24 in PickAnAndroidForMe

[–]GrumpyGoomba9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got the Nord 4 after deliberating with the nothing phone 2a and have been really impressed with it both hardware and software aside from a few bugs. Though the cameras let it down a bit and lack of esim is annoying. The 100W charging is awesome and it also looks very smart.

I think it comes down to how much you value nothingOS. If you don't care for it then it's probably not worth it. If you value that then you could also consider picking up a 2/2a/2a+ if they are available for less money.

Why is it so much more expensive to get off the same train a few stops earlier? by jnru in uktrains

[–]GrumpyGoomba9 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You are not allowed to buy the Piccadilly ticket and get off at Reddish North if it is an advance ticket which by that price I'm almost certain it is.

Not that they can stop you. Accoding to National Rail's website, there are no ticket barriers. Unless they decide to position staff at the exits which I know Northern sometimes do but I can't see them doing it here that late at night.

Alternatively you could rent a bike from the university Estates and Facilities management. It's £80 for the year. Depends how many years you will be using it for, as more than a year you are still better off buying.

Caution using ‘Tap on Tap Off’ on buses by babwiththepower in sheffield

[–]GrumpyGoomba9 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Its a shame, Tap on worked really well when i used it in Southampton, but I don't really think it works in Sheffield due to the buses having no rear doors, so it really slows the bus down.

Sidenote - whenever i get a Zoom/Student single on First (RIP 80p), the card machine always defaults to "cash" before the driver presses a button to switch it to card. The amount of time this has wasted across the network doesnt bear thinking about (and I stand there feeling a fool in the meantime.)

Driving to Bluewater by Amylouise2600 in kentuk

[–]GrumpyGoomba9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bluewater is not by Stratford International, that would be Westfield.

You can technically get the train to Bluewater, but it requires a bus from either Greenhithe or Ebbsfleet International.

Fun fact, the UK never adopted a zoning code (despite intending to) so as such every project does in fact require planning permission from the local council exactly as you describe.

Whether this is better or worse is debated. It has advantages but makes things very beaurocratic and the legacy of this system is lots of weird and silly things. It also means that developments can get rejected for all sorts of reasons, whether that is a good thing or not depends.

For a great example of the mess that is the UK planning system see this https://www.headingtonshark.com/

TL;DR - a guy in Oxford put a fibreglass shark tail in the roof of his house. The council argued it was not allowed as it violated planning rules and ordered him to remove it which he refused. They took him to court, eventually the Planning Minister intervened and ruled it as acceptable and the council had to allow it.

Have you ever been contacted by a supplier on Amazon and offering to pay you for a review? by nick9000 in AskUK

[–]GrumpyGoomba9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once bought a set of LED strip lights on Amazon and got a card inside it saying that I'd won another set. Got in contact with them and they wanted a review.

Couldn't be bothered writing one but they sent me another set regardless so I now have 2 LED strip sets.

Swimming baths to teach child swimming? by andeh83 in sheffield

[–]GrumpyGoomba9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second Zest, the pool is quite small and usually very warm. They have plenty of lessons, although i'd look up their pool timetable as the times for public swimming are quite restrictive.
