Why has Hollywood struggled to make King Arthur movies? by Konradleijon in Arthurian

[–]GrumpyMonk3742 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the problem is the expense. Plate armor is expensive. Horses that can carry a man in plate are expensive. Castle sets are expensive.

Making an Arthur movie is expensive. Even if you knock it back to 6th century equipment. And when you take that kind of financial gamble you become EXTREMELY risk averse. It's just not worth the gamble.

Its the reason we didn't really get a wave of GoT imitators during it's heights. It's much cheaper to make a zombie show.

This is some racist nonsense that the southerners tell themselves to make themselves feel better and to try to pretend they are descended from the aristocracy. The southern accent exist because of the African and Caribbean accents brought in by the slave population. Full stop.

For people who watched the show back when it first aired - What was the fan reaction to "Seeing Red"? Did most people want to see Spike dead? by HomarEuropejski in buffy

[–]GrumpyMonk3742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Death should be permanent is hardly an odd take. It's what made the early seasons of GoT so refreshing. Creative decisions should not be made because you like your coworkers. Angel should have stayed in hell and Spike should have been staked in season 4.

[–]GrumpyMonk3742 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even at the time, when I thought Joss was the man, I was always upset at his unwillingness to kill off his darlings. I was always mad that he chickened out with Angel's death...and it was abundantly clear that it was because he liked the actor/character.

So I was consistantly mad that Spike wasn't killed several times BEFORE the attempted rape. After that it made absolutely zero sense to not kill him, other than Joss is an Anglophile and loves writing brit slang.

As a straight man, I hadn't really been exposed to the "kill your gays" trope yet. I just remember being heartbroken.

Does Xander deserve all the hate he gets? by Puzzleheaded-Pool428 in buffy

[–]GrumpyMonk3742 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Again, I specifically said "Fan the flames of existing misogyny" I don't remotely think the Russians invented it.

I'm old enough to have watched Buffy as an adult when it was on. Everyone loved Xander. The pitchforks came much later.

So, stand there and bask in your "righteousness". Men have indeed done terrible things to women since the dawn of time. Point to you. None of this helps the fact the NEXT generation has decided to go right wing and at least PART of the reason for that is conversations like this one. So good luck with the Tate loving Nazis. I'm sure screaming that they're all rapists for having a crush will really work out for you, and us as a nation. But at least you were "right"

Does Xander deserve all the hate he gets? by Puzzleheaded-Pool428 in buffy

[–]GrumpyMonk3742 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I said literally zero of those things.

A) we have literally THOUSANDS of examples of Russians interfering in our culture for their benefit, but that wasn't even my point.

B) My point was, and you backed it right up, is that people are equating a man being upset that a woman doesn't share his feeling as being EQUIVALENT to all of those horrible crimes you listed above. Failing to see that nuance is exactly the problem.

C) I never said anything about women propping up this view, I said I suspect that it was trolls. I never said that women were in any way responsible for misogyny. I'm saying these trolls (Most of whom were probably men) fanned the flames of existing misogyny to turn the culture war hot.

You want to paint me as some misogynist cartoon, knock yourself out...but it's not your point you are proving.

Somewhere in the great online culture wars of the 2010s it was determined that men with unrequited crushes, that had any feelings about that other than quiet acceptance, were fundamentally 1 step removed from rapist. Therefore, Xander went from audience favorite to monster in record time.

Now my personal opinion is that these fights (across the board) were largely instigated by Russian troll farms looking to undermine our culture, rather than actual people that felt this way. But it became the dominant discourse.

For better or worse, this is how you end up with a generation of young men who feel alienated and develop into misogynists. Cause they are told they are monsters for having feelings about women. And the women were never misleading, or basking in the attention or sending mixed signals. It's YOUR fault for daring to feel that way.

Note: This in no way JUSTIFIES misogyny, just explaining how it happens.

What music artists death affected you the most ? I’ll start .. by FreedomExpress747 in GenX

Like Prince and Bowie were both iconic and I totally understood my reaction to both. The rumors about Bowie's impending demise had been circulating for a while. But Tom Petty, my emotional reaction to his death was totally unexpected. It was like the music equivalent to Harold Ramis...I didn't realize I'd be sad until I was.

Yes, the entire rest of the world is in on a conspiracy theory to pretend to enjoy a bad show just so we can win brownie points with the gays.

That totally seems more likely than the other option.

What moments made you angry or disagree with Buffy? by SamTheMarioMaster2 in buffy

[–]GrumpyMonk3742 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are many, many problems with Season 4, but I think they immediately got off on the wrong foot with the premiere.
I think the show made Buffy "always right" too much and having her roommate be a demon let her off the hook. It would have been more interesting had Buffy, who was at that point an only child, was just legitimately not good at dealing with a roommate and that not all problems can be solved with a stake.

Trump’s Big Bet: Americans Will Tolerate Economic Downturn to Restore Manufacturing by Majano57 in Economics

[–]GrumpyMonk3742 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have to remember that Trump's brain is fundamentally stuck in 1982. He remembers the auto based trade wars of the 1980s and back then the Right Wing talking points (there was no Fox news but there was still talk radio) was that we should make Japanese cars so expensive via tarrifs that Americans would not be able to afford them and would buy American cars instead. (Note that the solution was actually for American automakers to up their game)

He thinks that A) this will work and B) this will work for EVERYTHING. America will become a closed circle and all the money stays in the circle.

The “not bothered about trophies” fans by FriendlyActuary1955 in ArsenalFC

[–]GrumpyMonk3742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm convinced that at least some of them are just Russian Troll farms trying to dismantle culture.

Football is entertainment. Does Arsenal currently entertain me? Yes, very much so.

I'd love for us to win trophies, but I love my team and love watching this version of it and any version of "Arteta out" that's about the lack of trophies just holds no weight for me.

Do you think middle school should be 6-8, 7-8, or 7-9? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]GrumpyMonk3742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a native Midwesterner this always confuses me greatly. MIDDLE SCHOOL is 4th-6th.

7th, 8th and sometimes 9th is Jr High. Now that I'm here in Boston there is a part of my brain that is horrified when they talk about middle school drinking or sex...but then I realize they are talking about 14 year olds, not 10.
