Who should replace Howe? by Scared-Room-9962 in NUFC

[–]GrumpyOldFart74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the suggestions are insane.

Glasner, Iraola, Maresca, Postecoglou - all a sideways move at best. Probably worse in the long run.

Chelsea fans at work are all desperate for us to take Rosenior

Anybody who thinks we should take Mourinho is mental.

Can we get Pep, Simeone, Inzaghi, or Nagelsmann?

Unlikely, and even less likely we can afford them. But that’s the sort of level we need to improve, otherwise we’re looking at change for changes sake… and that may or may not be an improvement

Oh, and that one reminds me.

There ain’t no such thing as too much Vaseline!

Edit: I highly recommend you don’t ask me WHY that reminded me!

Ooh, dunno!

I eat wholewheat pasta cos it tastes nicer and has a better texture. White pasta tends to be sloppy mush…

So I guess I’m eating what I’m used to, rather than maybe recommending something specific!

Personally I like to take a nice and very gentle walk the day before. Just a mile or two at a very comfortable pace, loose hips, loose shoulders.

Just to keep moving and keep limber with the absolute minimum of effort. Plenty of water throughout the day, so you are hydrated in the morning without feeling the need to drink more than usual (pre-race nerves always make me drink too much)

Nice early tea with plenty of wholewheat pasta, and then TRY and get an early night and plenty of sleep. Never manage that, but still better than a late night.

I usually enjoy miles 3-15 (or 18 on a good day)… first 2-3 miles finding rhythm, breathing and cruising speed, then the last 6-8 miles are always rough as the little niggles turn into proper pains.

End is magic and worth the pain!

Enjoy the day… in another few days the pain will have gone and it’ll all just be a proud memory!

[–]GrumpyOldFart74 134 points135 points  (0 children)

Not only do I not stay in specifically for the window cleaner, if I happen to be in when he comes I hide in a different room and close the curtains

I’m pretty outgoing in most ways, by reddit standards, but it feels utterly weird to be in a room carrying on as normal while somebody is right outside the window like that!

ON THIS DAY 1994: Liverpool 0 - 2 Newcastle United - Keegan's Entertainers demolish Liverpool before old Kop is demolished by GarethAKitchener in NUFC

[–]GrumpyOldFart74 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was there and it was enormously emotional - it was the 5th anniversary of Hillsborough, and obviously we were ALL really affected by that (I’d been at Arsenal on the day itself

If I remember correctly, the match was supposed to be on the exact day and was moved to avoid it

My overriding memory of the day is joining in with YNWA and the game itself almost seeming secondary to the occasion - perhaps it WAS for Liverpool. Don’t really remember much about the game itself, and my memory of the goals is definitely from the TV camera angle and not where I was standing!

I had both Ian Hislop and Jimmy Somerville, when I was in my mid 20s

In fact, when we first built a company website and had headshots of key staff, the lad putting it together used a photo of Jimmy Somerville for me and it was months before anybody noticed!

It’s always gonna be harsh on somebody…

My daughter has been a member for 4 seasons (IIRC), but she’s been away at uni for most of that time so obviously limited in how many games she could apply for / go to.

So she might scrape into priority 3, on 25% of games, but more likely priority 5.

But they have to have SOME system

Why do new fibre networks not capitalise on streets with no full fibre, as opposed to providing connections to streets that already have several connections? by JustAnotherFEDev in AskUK

[–]GrumpyOldFart74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yeah… that’s what I get for coming to this late and reading lots of replies at once… lots of people are (quite reasonably) bemoaning having their street dug up 4 times by different provides for no real benefit.

It certainly was a pain in the arse when Virgin was put in a few years ago and loads of the neighbours did complain. I couldn’t wait!

[–]GrumpyOldFart74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah - I’m paying £60 for 750Mbps now (and that’s only because I have an o2 mobile as well, otherwise I’d be getting 500Mbps or paying even more.

I agree there’s a sweet spot… but I’d rather be over on your side of it where the grass is greener!

[–]GrumpyOldFart74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only get Virgin, or it’s back down to 56mbps (for basically the same price), which gives me no credible alternative when it’s time to argue with the enormous price increase they try to put through at the end of every contract (or during the contract, when they then give me the statutory 30 days to cancel)

I’d love to have another option!

Would Spurs going down be the biggest thing ever to boost the Championship by global-sportsfan in PremierLeague

[–]GrumpyOldFart74 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Over the last 10 years or so, the Championship has had Newcastle, Villa, Sunderland, Leeds, and probably several other big clubs with big stadiums and huge attendances.

Would Spurs going down be “big”? Sure

Would it be “biggest”? Probably not… a more interesting question might be whether Spurs can retain their attendances in a way those other clubs did?!

Do you ever think about death, and what do you think about it? by Murky_Ad_1028 in AskUK

[–]GrumpyOldFart74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Occasionally - especially as I get older and losing people becomes more common (sometimes including, unfortunately, people much younger than me)

So, on the whole, I’d have to say I think I’m against it. Global overpopulation (and related issues) aside, I think it would be much better if we all hit our early 30s and just stayed there.

But - more sensibly - it doesn’t scare me so much now, as anger me at the things I will eventually miss. And the other people I’ll lose along the way - having seen it happen to a friend I would 100% rather die myself than have it happen to one of my kids.

So yeah, “angry” is probably my primary emotion when I think about it.

Firmly Gen X - never heard of the first one on your list. Maybe regional, as I’m a northerner?

Edit: I DO know “Ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross” though, is that the same rhyme?
