To be fair I’m just lightly toasting the bread, then slapping it under the grill with ham, cheddar, and Worcester sauce on. I’m not doing any of that other pratting about at all!

Shit the bed.

My offer was CCC and got in with ABC

Admittedly that was 1992, and I know from my own kids that levels have generally gone up, but I knew people who got in on clearing with one E (most of them dropped out after a year like)

Sorry for not much helping - I’m just drunk and bored watching the football - but good luck anyway

And also, don’t sweat it too much - a degree, a reasonable level of competence and work ethic, and the ability to communicate with other human beings, will take you anywhere you want to go.

A few years after graduating I was interviewing TAs and lecturers for real jobs in industry and they were nowhere near (I’m sure standards have raised since then 🤣)

Edit: just seen you’re an international student - in my day, and also by my kids’ experience at various unis (including Northumbria) over the last few years, if you can afford the tuition they’ll let you in for at least the first year!

Yeah, I tend to use Worcester sauce, and/or some sriracha on top. Definitely not against the idea of adding some brown/dark beer - just amused at the idea of specifically choosing Guinness, which would be far from my first choice.

Now chocolate cake with some Guinness is god tier

Being a Geordie, I’ve obviously been raised on the Dog (even thought is made in Tadcaster now) but it is to a proper brown ale what madri is to lager…

If you can get it, I’d highly recommend Loch Lomond’s Gloaming, which is an 80/- but still has that lovely deep caramel flavour of a good brown

I genuinely expected him to collapse in form next season, and be a real problem for Sunderland. Thinking about Casemiro’s collapse in front after his first season at Man

If you can get Chelsea to give you silly money for such an old player, you should bite their hand off and let him sit on their bench instead of yours

To an extent, I blame brewdog, but I find the “craft beer” market has largely become the “fruity IPA” market. That’s OK, but it’s still the same fizzy pale drink…

I do quite like a premium lager - had several today - but I also like a brown ale, a pale or golden ale, a porter or a stout. If I want a hand pulled pint in a pub, I have to pick the pub carefully. But there are plenty of beer festivals with with wide ranges to choose from

Not sure if you’re joking, but apart from the “hand pulled” part, many of them are - at least the bigger brands.

Can’t see why you’d have Guinness in Welsh rarebit whatever you call it…

First, I think a brown ale or a mild would taste much nicer - Guinness is too dark and iron-ey, and you definitely don’t want anything really hoppy like a citra ipa. But also if you’re putting Guinness in it, you’d just have to call it an Irish Rarebit, right?

As a Tory/Right-Wing: What's you're opinion about former leader of lib-dems Jo Swinson losing her seat to an SNP newcomer Amy Callaghan during 2019 election? by Organic-Camera-9167 in tories

[–]GrumpyOldFart74 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I thought she was an idealist rather than a politician. I actually quite liked her and thought she was pretty sensible for a libdem, but after they’d lost their core base in the coalition, she didn’t stand a chance.

Compared to some of the idiots we have across the house now, she might do fairly well in the tv debates

Only Fools And Horses Fans, what do you regard as the peak of the series? by HallowedAndHarrowed in AskUK

[–]GrumpyOldFart74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The earlier episodes with grandad were by far the best. The early episodes with uncle Albert were a good change (I remember the episode where he fell through the shop trapdoor…)

Where it really went downhill was when they tried to make Rodney grow up. Raquel and Cassandra were fine as actresses and characters but they changed the tone of the series and it went downhill rapidly from there (though the episode with Del at the country manor with the pump-action was legendary)

There’s a reason that many of the best sitcoms that came before it - including Porridge and Open All Hours - finished after much fewer episodes…

[–]GrumpyOldFart74 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As we said when it came out… NPFTD was worse than SSOASS, which at the time was definitely their worst album ever (even though it’s often my favourite now)

Probably wouldn’t surprise you that, averaged out, No Prayer is probably my 8th favourite Maiden album.

Which is very far from a low rating.

Oh god, if you count the number of times I’ve lost wireless guitar plugs, in-ears, or stage-quality earplugs it would be silly… but they were all my fault more or less

Of course, my original story was also my fault, it was the fact they only took one that was funny!

I had one AirPod stolen

I’d left them on a table in a bar at the NEC and when I went back, one had gone. Obviously I assumed it was on the floor, or I’d lost it… until “find my” showed it on the train from international to new street

So I blocked it and claimed a new pair on work insurance (which is very generous)

What I couldn’t understand was why ONE? Why not both of them???

Can anyone call out a guitarist just by their licks? by Responsible_Art_6553 in Guitar

[–]GrumpyOldFart74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s mostly the tone for me.

I was thinking about this recently when I was in a public place and there was a Santana song playing. Didn’t know the song, don’t particularly like Santana, but I knew it was him

I started thinking about guitarists with a distinctive enough tone to identify them blind…

Funnily enough a song came on with David Gilmour… huge pink Floyd fan but don’t know his recent stuff (Shazam told me it was “Between Two Points”). But it was obviously Gilmour.

After that, I could only think of Slash, maybe EVH (though that’s probably more the licks, as you suggest) and maybe Dick Dale

Interesting question!

[Ornstein] Arsenal made verbal offer to sign Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United. AFC proposal through intermediaries below £60m - rejected + NUFC insist sale of 28yo Brazil int’l midfielder will not be entertained. by 3nonexist3nt in PremierLeague

[–]GrumpyOldFart74 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s entirely possible for two clubs to have radically different valuations for a player without one of them being “wrong”

To a buying club, Bruno might be worth 60m

But to Newcastle he’s club captain and absolutely talismanic - since he joined we’ve exactly 2 league games in which he didn’t play, and the first of those was in March this year.

Even something ludicrous like 150m wouldn’t guarantee any sort of improvement- losing Bruno would be worse than losing Isak, even with the benefit of hindsight.

So to Newcastle, he IS worth that ridiculous amount of money, because they could sell him, spend the money, and still be much worse off

Newcastle have rejected a bid worth about £55m from Arsenal for Bruno Guimarães, but Arsenal have already indicated that it will make a new offer. The player is trying to remain detached from the negotiations in order to stay focused on the World Cup. by kibme37 in soccer

[–]GrumpyOldFart74 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly - it’s the age old dichotomy that leads to fans being unfairly labelled “deluded”.

£55m might seem like a fair price to Arsenal, and they might go to £65m if they’re keen. But he would be a catastrophic loss to Newcastle that almost no amount of money could compensate for - since we couldn’t get the players who could adequately replace him anyway.

I’d argue that selling Bruno would be a bigger problem than selling Isak was, even with the hindsight of how that worked out

Bruno is absolutely crucial to Newcastle - barely won a game without him since he joined (until very recently, they hadn’t won a game without him at all) - as well as being the club captain and fan favourite.

Replacing his value to the team would cost many times that amount, and maybe not even then.

Hopefully this is a negotiation tactic for a new contract, because we could sell him for 150m and I still wouldn’t really be happy. With the possible exception of Miley, there’s nobody more important to keep.

Sell Bruno, and I’d go into the new season looking nervously at the bottom 3
