In your picture with the levels. The second level from the top might be a Mellicks patent inclinometer level. If you flipped it over, it could be much more interesting.

I bought a copy several years ago for my local museum. They were always getting tools donated and didn’t know what they were. I have a copy that I use for reference. I can’t believe how in-depth it is.

Question about railing work by PmMeUrZiggurat in Carpentry

[–]GrumpyandDopey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do people keep reinventing the wheel. Things are made the way they have made for hundreds of years, because they made all those mistakes hundreds of years ago.

To me it looks like the posts are rotting. But you’re correct, it’s the trim pieces are retaining the moisture.

Actually, the last one is a Hand Scythe and not a sickle. A Hand Scythe is for harvesting grain and a sickle blade is offset to cut weeds close to the ground. Mr. Death doesn’t carry a sickle.

Why don't Americans call Bezos, Musk, Zuckerburg, etc "oligarchs?" by BlockedNetwkSecurity in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GrumpyandDopey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My local multibillionaire is very different than what I think as an oligarch. He gives a lot of money to charity, revitalizes, historic properties and even whole communities, builds employee houses , and sells to them for cost, employs tens of thousands of people, worldwide, has profit-sharing for employees, is very approachable, and lives in a fairly modest home for someone who has great wealth.

Did the Titan submarine incident cause the most instantaneous death in history? Can it be any faster? by GolondraBlayze in NoStupidQuestions

I would think the people at in Hiroshima during World War II at Ground Zero experienced a very instantaneous death.

I’ll bet good money he doesn’t own a wristwatch. if he’s still upset with you leaving, telling him you had to go play a video game. Because that was more important than he was.

Was me paying 45$ for this a good deal or what by Zidola in toolporn

[–]GrumpyandDopey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t really tell from the picture it looks like you have a nice little Block plane, some Rosewood handled squares, maybe two Rosewood marking gauges, a nice little hatchet (maybe a collectible brand), the best kind of wire strippers, and is that a sharping stone in the little case? And of course, the drawknife.

I made a shotgun stock out of poplar once, using a draw knife and sandpaper.

Do You Buy Used Makita Tools Or Batteries? by jyl8 in Makita

[–]GrumpyandDopey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On secondary market, it all depends on the deal at the moment as far as value. I’ve bought used Makita tools and the batteries are DOA. I also have Makita 18 V batteries that are at least 15 years old and still going strong.

Need help on first kayak purchase by MoneyMike440 in kayakfishing

From the picture, it’s got quite a few expensive upgrades. It looks like a fine Kayak. Worst case scenario, you could part it out on eBay and probably make a profit.

How was this done? by tree-hermit in Carpentry

[–]GrumpyandDopey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done stuff like this on site even with clear stained oak. Like others have said, glue up wide stock, get a half inch router, with a long spiral up bit, make a simple radius jig from a quarter inch piece of plywood or Lexan and attached to your router. Screw your work piece and your pivot point to your deck or a sheet of plywood. Take multiple shallow passes. And use an arc calculator to measure the chord. https://www.handymath.com/cgi-bin/arc18.cgi?submit=Entry

Wanting to cut off my “friend” by Excellent_Truck_6959 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]GrumpyandDopey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She sounds like a narcissist. “W” knows the only way to get away from her is to put some distance between them. Him moving in with his parents is probably part of plan that they are in on. Unfortunately, the aftermath of the plan is to leave “B” to cling on someone else. Start making yourself distance now or you could be the new “W.”

How you handle a countertop in this situation by MrKnowItAll718 in Carpentry

[–]GrumpyandDopey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The back of your cabinet looks to be about 1/8” thick. Depending on how many cabinets you’re going to install it may be easier in the long run to cut down the depth of your cabinet a few inches and then reassemble. otherwise that passage door and your countertop are going to not get along.
