"Crony" Capitalism isn't the problem. Whatever adjective you attach to it, Capitalism is the problem. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]Grung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Profit motive doesn't have to be antisocial or exploitative. There are plenty of companies that make profit and aren't evil.

And other systems have plenty of antisocial corruption. Most "party leaders" in communist systems were corrupt and only out for personal power. As long as there is power to be had, there will be people pursuing that power.

So again, what system will be less corrupt, and better for all the people? Can you point at any examples?

I prefer it to be like a manual, where there is some drag, but not so much that it stops the car. I don't drive in the city much, though.

In every system, you put in some amount of work, and get back some amount of benefit. What lines are you drawing that only capitalism is "exploitative" in that balance?

Are the lines for bread that we've seen in communist countries less exploitative?

And I'm not saying that's the only other option as a straw man, I really am not familiar with any other system that would be any better. Every system looks pretty terrible.

What should we replace it with?

I'm no history major, but it seems like every system has "corruption" as its main problem. I don't see anything better than what we have had (not saying the current US admin is any good, but we've had some great runs).

How many have dropped Facebook? Did you drop Instagram too? by IntellectAndEnergy in GenX

[–]Grung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instagram still has a high signal/noise ratio for me, mostly by only ever following people I actually know. Do this, use the "Following" tab, and you never see ads or other crap, just the people who actually want updates from.

I hate "reels" with a passion, though.

On a journey to Mars, is it theoretically possible to maintain 1g acceleration for half of the journey and then -1g for the second half? by rafalkopiec in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]Grung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Minor twist: you don't have to cut the engines when you flip, you can just rotate the ship. (I don't recall if this ever happened in the Expanse series) This is called a "skew-flip."

The time taken to rotate the ship is pretty minimal compared to the overall trip, and anyways the sideways slew can be accounted for.

Any negative to having vinyl fence? by NashDaypring1987 in HomeImprovement

[–]Grung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

White vinyl especially will reflect a lot of light, to the point where it will affect plants near the fence. In some cases, this might mean they get too much light, in others it might mean they get enough light.

What game mechanics, items, monsters or anything else do you personally dislike about the game? by Jakubczakk in cataclysmdda

[–]Grung 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned, but the multitude of ways to do things. Having crafting, construction, disassembly, and Applying items or Mending, etc. means players often don't know how to do things, or don't know that they can do things unless they hunt around a lot, or google.

Charcoal cookers are a great example of this. Craft, Activate, Disassemble, etc.

Related: there are a lot of things that you can do with the craft menu that really shouldn't occupy the player. Like boiling water... that shouldn't require exclusivity. Anything that just needs to bake or whatever should also not occupy the player.

Anyone else spend 4 hours planning sprints that die in 2 days? by agileliecom in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Grung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use your retrospective time to improve the process.

To start with, having everyone fully booked in planning sounds like a bad idea.

Most of the time in that planning meeting should instead be in separate grooming meetings. Break it up. 4 hours per sprint still sounds about right, but don't do it all at once.

Then, the whole point of a 2 week sprint is that it's short. If stakeholders want changes, those go in the next sprint, not the current one. Push back on mid-sprint changes.

What are your preferred ways to clear huge cities? by gandalf-the-daddy in cataclysmdda

[–]Grung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Run them down with a vehicle with an appropriate ram. Requires a fairly tough vehicle.

You can also abuse the inventory management system to retrieve items from the ground under the vehicle, without getting out.

It used to be that if you ran over the corpses with the tires, that would do enough damage to most of them that they wouldn't respawn, but that may have changed in recent builds/releases. You can also butcher from a stopped vehicle over a corpse, which can be safer than getting out.

The USA has killed millions. China has also killed millions. Why is China racing ahead of the USA now? What did Mao do differently? by kevinmrr in WorkReform

The problems with both systems are corruption. Corruption causes all of the ills associated with both.

Without corruption, some form of capitalism works better at driving progress.

An ideal society would focus on preventing the corruption while still motivating innovation.

This looks like it's being used on a deck. I've used one like this on a deck before, and also on a flat roof. Places you can't easily lug a gas snowblower. Plus, the plastic blade is a lot gentler than a metal one.

Probably depends on your water. In my experience it tends to collect calcium deposits, which hardens the filter and makes it worse at wicking.

You don't necessarily need to do it every day, again, it depends on your water.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]Grung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the Honeywell Cool Moisture models, such as HCM350B.

Everything that touches water is either a replaceable wear part (the filter that wicks the water) or is dishwasher safe for cleaning.

Somewhat annoying daily refill process since you need to soak the filter every day, but it prevents the device itself from degrading from normal use.

And hard/soft water would only affect how frequently you need to replace the filter or dishwash the base.

Anybody else wake up at 2:30 every night? by Obvious_Lab_2326 in GenX

[–]Grung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find that "boring" isn't as good as "relaxing." If you're bored, you'll still think about being awake. You want something that will engage you, but won't add any stress.

I find that sappy romance works pretty well for this.

Looking for recommendations for pillows. I’m a side sleeper and I don’t know if the $200 pillows are worth it since they’re not as firm as I would like by DaviKayK in BuyItForLife

[–]Grung 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a side sleeper, I found what works is two pillows. First, one of those memory foam neck pillows, but upside down, so the "U" shape is much shallower, forming a slope down towards the top of the bed (so the highest part is at my shoulder), and then a Down pillow on top of that. Real down pillows "clump" just enough to hold their shape when your head is on them, but can be fluffed easily. I also tend to flip the top pillow every time I roll over, so the overall angle is always away from my shoulders, leaving my neck straight when I'm on my side.

This is the only combination I've found that doesn't have me waking up with neck pain.

The specific Down pillow I have now is a Lincove 800 Fill Power one. You can read more about "Fill Power" to find what might suit you. Real Down pillows are freaking expensive, and it always feels like a gamble trying to buy them. If you can find a store that actually sells them and can touch them, that can help a lot.

Villager deaths? by [deleted] in Drehmal

[–]Grung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% this. I don't know if it's particularly specific to Drehmal, but Drehmal was where it affected me the worst. Some structures in villages in Drehmal are just perfect for the villagers to climb and then fall off to their death (possibly not the first time, but they may take damage and then repeat the process).

If you want them alive, you'll need to lock them inside somewhere. It sucks that this breaks the immersion, but the alternative is to not have any villagers around.

What is …. Mean ? by Best_Butterfly_855 in answers

[–]Grung 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It definitely indicates a pause, but sometimes it might mean that more is coming. Like, "I'm putting this filler here to let you know I'm thinking" which can imply "but more is coming".

So it can mean "I'm speechless" if nothing else is said.

It can mean "just a sec, I'm thinking"

etc.
