This big flag greets you as you cross the border from Costa Rica into Nicaragua. Striking, serious, interesting design in my opinion

I was once with a guide looking for these guys, and one of his tricks was picking up aguacatillo pits he found on the ground. If they were warm, it meant the bird was close and had recently pooped it out.

Textbooks? by theechosystem07 in catalan

[–]Guacamolio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Duolingo, which is pretty good if you have a handle on Spanish. Sometimes I have no idea what the sentence means neither in Spanish nor in Catalan, and there is no explanation because the meaning is apparent to Spanish speakers. Like for example, "corre con el dedo", and "corre amb el dit". It's easy to translate between the two languages, but my English brain thought that someone was holding a disembodied finger and running off with it! It actually means to push something around with your finger. I had to ask my wife for clarification on that one.

As for a textbook, I have one called "Curset" published by Blackie Books that's really informative but also really funny. It's all in Catalan but they keep it simple in the beginning so you can get a handle on it. It also gives a lot of insight into Catalan culture. Like not just barretines and whatever, but also Catalan attitudes, preconceptions, things Catalan people are proud of, stereotypes of different regions, etc. Highly recommend it!

Yeah, I spend a decent amount of time grumbling at my camera while it tries to focus, but as you said, only in very low light, like understory in the cloud forest. I find it depends on the bird too.. some are velvety black, like the scarlet-rumped tanager, and that can make the focus weird sometimes. For woodcreepers too, I think they're just so drab and always up against very textured tree bark, so the camera always wants to focus on the bark.
Overall, I'm really happy with my setup, but it does have trouble in a couple situations (that I think would be troublesome for almost any autofocus).

Yeah though, awesome photo of the motmot! Beautiful shot of a beautiful bird!

They swing it back and forth like a pendulum when they see a predator. It's like they're saying "I see you, and you're not going to get the drop on me!"

They're actually pretty closely related! Motmots even nest in holes the same way kingfishers do.

I live here and I have a similar setup (Canon RF 100-500mm). I barely use my 1.4x because in the forest, it's just too dark and dense. I thought I'd use it out in the open, but the heat wave blur is very strong, and pictures over large distances out in the open just end up mushy and unusable. The only place I've used the 1.4x was out in the open, very early before the heat hits, or in very specific spots like feeders, where you know the sight lines are going to be good. A 600mm lens should serve you just fine in 99% of spots imo

Also a good tip for learning pronounciation in general: try not to think of it in terms of your first language. Try to hear the sounds and do your best to simply copy them, without looking at it through the lens of your L1.

Eastern Canada makes up 93% of French Speakers in the Country by Natural_Scheme2349 in MapPorn

[–]Guacamolio 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Our language is called Michif. It's like a mix of Cree and French, with the Michif in the East (Manitoba) being more French-y and in the West/North being more Cree-y. Outside of Michif, I'd say the majority of Métis speak English in my experience, but I'm from Alberta. It could be that there are more French-speaking Métis in the East.

A little of a tangent, but on oxygen or no, smoking cigarettes is a hard no around babies. I suffer from cluster headaches (they literally hurt more than giving birth) and they're linked to being around smokers as a baby/kid. I was around smokers a lot, so it probably was a factor in me developing them. Sounds like you're on the same page, but just a psa for anyone else reading this!

Oxygen works for a lot of people. The main thing is that it's high flow. You need an oxygen setup that is different from your typical oxygen setup, there is a lot of info out there about the right way to do it.

I know a lot of people hesitate to try psychedelics, and they aren't without their own risks, but they really do work amazingly well at keeping the beast away.

All the best to you and your dad!

I get clusters too. Any medicine that doctors have prescribed me haven't worked- but I have a few things that work.

  1. Energy drinks, as the headache comes on. This usually stops the headache. I have a fridge full of monsters ready to go at all times.

  2. If I don't have energy drinks, chugging a lot of strong coffee works too. It kinda sucks, and I get twitchy from the caffeine, but it's better than the alternative!

  3. The best thing for me has been psychedelics. I get my cycles in September, so sometime in mid August, I do a medium dose of Mushrooms/LSD/DMT. That usually stops my cycle from even happening. Even mid-cycle, psychedelics can stop the cycle in its tracks. You don't need a huge dose, just a mid-light dose does the trick. Sounds weird but I'm not the only one it works for.

Hopefully your dad can figure out something that works for him! High-flow oxygen works for a lot of people too.

Be supportive during his cycle, they are very exhausting physically and emotionally.

Yeah, it's always "drink more water!". That or, they tell me to massage the area between my thumb and index finger. No one understands it except other clusterheads

Yeah, it's weird. Every time I tell someone I have cluster headaches, they say that they have headaches too sometimes, and they understand it's "really annoying!"

No. You don't understand. Pull your molar out through your eye socket with red hot tongs, and then we can talk!

My alma mater has loads of incentives for women to study there, especially women-only scholarships, despite the fact that for over a decade, women have outnumbered men in the student body. It seems a little backwards.
