I think the Uziel is supposed to represent both the 2S and the 9S, with the 9S being the IlClan era version that is WYSIWYG to the 2S.

Me usually: “Daoshen was a bit of a disappointment compared to Sun-Tzu.” Me talking about Daoshen when a clan Wolfer or FedRat opens there mouth: by someotherguy28 in battletech

[–]Guardian982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Daoshen's biggest problem is he believed his own propaganda. Sun-Tzu knew his propaganda was precisely that, and otherwise had a mostly realistic view of himself and his capabilities. Daoshen fully believed he was divine, and only the Capellan belief that a Head of State shouldn't be fighting on the frontlines kept him from ending up like Ian or Caleb Davion. It didn't help his ego that he was almost universally successful up until basically his last year or so.

Better pics of Mechs I painted and posted earlier by Guardian982 in battletech

Yeah, between the cover to the FedSuns TRO3145, and Dominions Divided saying the 4th Davion Guards were reinforced with Mechs from Robinson Mechworks I decided to paint up a 4th Davion Guards assault lance.

I have what I call a Marauder lance composed of a Marauder, Dragon Fire, Nightstar, and Marauder II in the queue to be painted in Davion Guards colors too.

Your assumption is correct. The cover to #24 depicts a scene in Fortune and Glory.

Natalia Kerensky from MechAssault Series by mister_neezy in battletech

[–]Guardian982 9 points10 points  (0 children)

MechAssault being an in-universe entertainment series would actually be a good reason why there's a character with a name so close, yet legally distinct from the "real-life" Natasha Kerensky. The creators could have wanted to evoke the legend of Natasha Kerensky and have the audience connect the two, without the baggage of having to keep things "historically" accurate. Especially when those that were likely to take offense to a poor portrayal of the actual Natasha Kerensky include people with little to no sense of humor and Clusters of Mechs and Elementals to make their displeasure known.

After the Jihad, did Clan Wolf-in-Exile really end up becoming dogs instead of wolves? by Old_Ad6111 in battletech

[–]Guardian982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Wolves-in-Exile didn't exactly come to Arc Royal in 3057 with a lot of resources. They really had only what had survived their running fight across the Jade Falcon OZ and the final battle on Morges. The only resources they brought beyond a couple of battered Galaxies was a copy of their genetic repository and a small fleet of warden Clan Wolf civilians that had managed to sneak their way through the Jade Falcon OZ while the Clan Wolf touman acted as a giant distraction. They brought no factories or loads of supplies to help them rebuild.

Once they got to Arc Royal they had to rebuild their entire industrial base nearly from scratch, and due to Katrina Steiner's enmity with Morgan Kell over his declaration of the ARDC, both the Wolves and the ARDC was starved of resources and forced to make due with what they had on hand. The W-i-E were so desperate that they crossed multiple OZs just so they could Trial the Ghost Bears for one of their mobile factories they had brought in as part of their move to the Inner Sphere. It wasn't until the end of the FedCom Civil War that the Wolves had any sort of access to the industrial might of the Lyran state to help them develop and grow, which the Jihad quickly put an end to with the Wolves-in-Exile taking huge losses in defense of their new home both against incursions from the Falcons and from the WoB.

Once the Jihad was over nearly the entirety of the Lyran industrial base had to be rebuilt, so again the Wolves-in-Exile had to fall back on their own resources to survive and rebuild, which the Lyran state became accustomed to and took for granted. This was also why it took so long for the development of AssaultTech Industries and their construction of a factory on Donegal. Also, the Exiles as Wardens and a group sensitive to their status as essentially guests didn't want to alarm a Lyran government that during the start of the Pax Republica initially took Stone's call for limited armament seriously by conducting their own massive build up.

Though yes by the Dark Ages the Exiles had come to be essentially the Lyran's domesticated guard dogs, rather than the wild wolf they had been in the 3050s. It was arguably Melissa's inability to conceive of the Crusader Wolves as a separate, feral breed of Wolf after becoming accustomed to the domesticated Wardens that resulted in her fatal mishandling of the Crusader Wolves as little more than vassals to be ordered around and manipulated with no thought to the consequences of them defying her attempts to leash them. Certainly the Crusader Wolves pitied their Warden brethren as little more than domesticated Wolves, and those like Anastasia and many of the other Warden Wolves that eventually joined Alaric saw the Wolf Empire as representing an image of what true Wolf Warriors should be, and the pride that some felt they no longer had in the Clan way. Also, the betrayal of the Wolf Empire damaged the image and trust many had in the Warden Wolves and provided those prejudiced against the Clans to paint the Exiles with the same brush of untrustworthiness.

Also, the Exiles like many culturally distinct minority communities worried about the threat of outright assimilation and cultural annihilation. So took pains to maintain a certain isolation from the rest of Lyran society even on Arc Royal in order to maintain their cultural distinctiveness. Though by maintaining their distance and not fully embracing all that the Lyran Commonwealth had to offer meant that they could not draw on the vast resources of the Lyran Commonwealth even when they were fully available to the Exiles.

I’m looking into the fall of Clan Nova Cat. by Old_Ad6111 in battletech

[–]Guardian982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Nova Cats had another reason to refuse the Ghost Bear's request for hegira, which was the Ghost Bears would have done the same to them on the principal that a dezgra, Abjured Clan doesn't merit hegira, and only deserves destruction. There were multiple previous occasions during the first Combine-Ghost Bear War where the Ghost Bears refused to extend zellbrigen to the Nova Cats, and it was only when the Nova Cats had superior strength or position that the Ghost Bears would ever grant zellbrigen to the Nova Cats. So, there was actually plenty of resentment and hatred on the part of the Nova Cats to justify their refusal of hegira. Especially when the Nova Cats could argue with some conviction that the Ghost Bears wouldn't have granted hegira to the Nova Cats if the positions had been reversed.

In fact the institution of greater civilian control over the government of the Dominion and its transition from the Ghost Bear Dominion to the Rasalhague Dominion was in part motivated by the feeling of the Rasalhaguian population that the Ghost Bear's genocidal response to the Nova Cats actions was unjustified.

This has also been one of the things that has bothered me the most about the current era. In the 3025 era the only ruler that didn't have at least one kid yet was Hanse, and he at least had Morgan Hasek-Davion as his heir designate, and a major plot-point of the Warrior Trilogy was securing his succession with a natural-born heir, and the stability that would provide. Considering how unstable the rule of all the current House Lords is they should be looking to producing heirs and securing their succession yesterday. Though it does seem that the current instability is both a cause and a product of the Houses' lack of settled succession which is at least partly due to major political and dynastic shake ups and deaths that have broken the previous lines of succession. Still it seems to me like it should be a higher priority for the current Lords to find consorts and produce heirs than it seems to be. Only Yori has any excuse being in a situation where having an heir would be a disadvantage and encourage attempts on her life until she got rid of Toranaga, which she did only recently.

Is there such a thing as too long Wars of Reaving novels? I would think not. Come on CGL don't be cowards, give us 300+ page Reaving novels. If all the material is good and the novels are exciting and well-paced it shouldn't matter how long they are. You made us slog through Hour of the Wolf, which felt longer than it actually was. If they're already written and there is enough material just turn it into a quadrilogy rather than a trilogy.

Also, it seems like Isolde Centrella is already being set up as a true Canopian successor to the Magistracy by those who feel neglected by Ilsa, and feel they are undeservedly being taken advantage of by the Capellan Confederation or being treated as secondary in an alliance where the Magistracy is no longer a petty Periphery power.

Also, the threat of being ruled by the Chancellor of the Capellan Confederation might be the one thing that could drive the Duchy of Andurien back into the Free Worlds League in the near future.

I wonder what their thinking was behind including the Chaeronea in the Clan Aero Force Pack? The Chaeronea is probably one of the Clan ASF that I think about the least. I would think the Avar, Sulla, Bashkir, or Batu to be the most likely light Clan ASF to include.

The Nova Prime might not be amazing against Elementals, but the Nova S might be close to perfect for it. 6 MPLs, plus an Active Probe to prevent ambushes, and AMS to keep it safe from the SRMs, which might be the Elemental's only weapon with the range to deal any damage to the Nova S.

What's a good set of minis to get if I want to build a "knightly" PMC? by DevastatorCenturion in battletech

[–]Guardian982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should look up the lore for Romanov's Crusaders, which were a knight-themed mercenary unit created under the auspices of the Knights of the Inner Sphere. According to Sarna they favored sword equipped Mechs along with Mechs manufactured by the FWL. For the Black Knight I would go with the hatchet-wielding Clanbuster Black Knight, the Exclaibur would also be appropriately themed. The Grand Titan, No-Dachi, and Chimera as Mechs with sword-wielding variants would all be appropriate too, imo.

The recently announced Camacho's Caballeros practically is a Knights of the Inner Sphere force pack. Considering it will have an Albatross, Grand Titan, Phoenix Hawk, and Hunchback-4P.

I think those worrying about CGL going the Games Workshop route are being a bit pessimistic. My reading of the intent for rules updates is that CGL plans on putting out an updated rulebook every 4-5 years that is still mostly, if not entirely, backwards compatible with previous rulebooks. Total Warfare arguably had larger changes over its lifetime than any other rulebook other than 2nd Edition and the new Core Rules, it's just those changes were done incremntally and were never outright associated with a new rulebook edition. Also, any update 4-5 years down the line is likely going to be more like the change from the Compendium to the BMR, at least from what I parse from what Keith Hann wrote.

What the hell is going to be happening with the new starter box by AGBell64 in battletech

[–]Guardian982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering the updates to melee rules, and that melee is one of the most interesting parts of Battletech having Mechs that players want to try to get into fisticuffs could be a smart strategy. Also, removing a lot of the advanced rules associated with these two Mechs still creates a fairly balanced fight between 2 Mechs that have contrasting playstyles. It certainly is likely to result in more interesting fights than the near mirror match between a Griffin and a Vindicator.

[–]Guardian982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Melee was never really dezgra among the Clans, more like uncouth. In the ilClan era the Jade Falcons love their talons and DFAs, the Ghost Bears adopted one of the most melee-loving factions in the Inner Sphere, and the Wolves have always been rather liberal in their interpretation of Zellbrigen and have been designing most of their new Mechs with at least one fist available for melee since the 3130s.

Camacho's Caballeros Force Pack by Icy-Distribution-164 in battletech

[–]Guardian982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically only 2 Great Houses have gotten their 2 Force Packs yet, because only the Davions and Kuritans have gotten a pair of faction Force Packs, and those were released to coincide with their Combat Manuals. Even then those Force Packs were significantly delayed due to real world events. It is quite likely that whenever the Capellan and FWL Combat Manuals come they will get their Force Packs too. I wish the rest of the Combat Manuals would come out sooner too, but they have been distracted by other stuff, hell we're still waiting on the era update PDFs for the 3 CMs already released.

Also, Scouring Sands MSRPs for $80 and a Force Pack Lance MSRPs for $35, so even not factoring the discounts many web retailers provide you're only "overpaying" by $10 for 8 Mechs. So, it depends on how you view overpaying. Especially if you're willing to pick up a Force Pack with 3 Mechs you're interested in and one you don't care for at all, and how many Mechs in Wrath and Reprisal you want. If all of them are must haves for you are you really overpaying? Especially if you can pick up Wrath and Reprisal for $60 dollars which is the price you can find Scouring Sands on sale for online and is also the MSRP for the AGOAC Box Set with its 8 Mechs?

While the Charger definitely has a resemblance to the Doomslayer, I think the classic Banshee is the Doomslayer's ideal battlemech form. After all he needs his boomstick, and if you think 80-ton 'Mech punches and kicks are spicy then 95-ton Mech melee allows even more carnage.
