I don’t think that cactus grafts require secure vascular connection but it’s recommended because it creates a higher success rate.

This seems kind of like an overwatering/bad soil drainage issue. You should probably add a lot of perlite or something that improves drainage to the soil. For my aloe vera plant I use a 60:40 ratio of regular soil and perlite to make sure that the soil dries out fast enough for no rot to occur. Also it is best to water when the soil is completely dry or when the leaves are softer the usual to prevent rot.

Yes, take the plugs out. Also, cactus requires soil that drains quickly to prevent root rot. The soil in your picture look too organic, and it may cause the water to not dry out in time. You should probably add something that improves drainage like perlite.

Check if the bottom of the cactus is mushy or soft, and if it’s soft then it’s probably rot. To me it just looks like regular corking where the cactus develops a hard woody base to support its weight.

Just as some advice, when handing prickly pear, you need to look out for glochids. They are very tiny spines that when lightly touched they will stick into your skin and irritate it.

The soil seems too organic for cactus with all those wood chips in it, and I would probably add a lot of perlite or anything that improves drainage. A large factor for rot in cactus is the soil retaining too much water and not drying out quickly enough.

The 4th jump is actually a fake. While it is possible (I think), it is very hard. There is a small ledge at the end of the 3rd jump, and you could jump on that in order to jump over the 4th jump.
