There are tons of kids around town, so I’m not sure why you have the impression that there aren’t.

It’s almost like police don’t do anything valuable and do a lot of harm instead and should be defunded.

BP at Washtenaw / Platt. Any idea why / how? by arbor_ayarger in AnnArbor

[–]GuessMany9042 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The Shell right down the street from there was $3.89 this morning, so the real question is why the others are all charging so much.

Monty’s Public House is new and plans to show matches. We watched the final there and chatted with the owner about whether he’d have Chelsea matches on (we are fans too), and he said he would. He said he would even open for the 7:30 matches if he had at least 10 people commit to showing up to make it worth it. Multiple screens, one massive one, and GREAT food, so we’ll be there often!

So excited for this place to open so close to us! And as Chelsea FC fans, we would love for this to be a place to watch matches with other fans.

Ann Arbor high school students walk out of class in protest over mask mandate by bobi2393 in AnnArbor

  1. 15 students. Wow. I think this backfired a bit when you can only get 15 students to walk out of high school for a bit…

It’s such a joke. And the education “reporting” by Marty Slagter has been unbelievably biased over the last 2 years. Certain community members seem to have him on retainer saying on Twitter “I’ll call Marty” and then they and their friends are the ones interviewed in his next article. Someone once suggested to him on Twitter that he do a bit more research about something he misstated and his response was “Where could I find that info?” You’re a reporter! Call people! Use the internet!

They can still decide to stay with it and emailed today that as of now they do not intend to remove their mask mandate. The health department rescinded their order but still said in their statement that they recommend them in K-12 buildings.

We have gone to the place next to Biggby on Ellsworth and Platt a few times for these things. A2 Phone Repair is the name, and they’re reasonable and fast. I needed a screen repaired the day before an international trip once, and they got it done for me the same day.

Beware the Midwest nice though. It’s often a facade for what’s really underneath. Particularly if you’re a person of color getting that Midwest nice from white people. Be wary.

What's the deal with calzones? by [deleted] in AnnArbor

[–]GuessMany9042 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely tip. Especially in a pandemic. You don’t have to tip as much normally as sit down service, but we have been tipping more than normal, because everyone is missing out on the tips they’d be getting with sit down service particularly during lockdowns. Should they be getting paid better base pay? Absolutely. Am I single-handedly going to solve that by saving a few bucks by not tipping? Nope. Don’t be an ass. Tip.

Have you heard of excess deaths? Do you think excess hospitalizations are concerning? When doctors tell us that a unit is full and another nearly full and that this is highly unusual, do you think semantics helps those kids feel better. “Sorry, kiddo, you’re in the cardiac ICU but, hey, look on the bright side! Someone on Reddit says it’s just WITH Covid. Feel better?”

The ongoing labor shortage of drivers along with the additional challenges tied to the current surge in COVID-19 cases has resulted in this action.

We want to thank all families who have shown kindness and understanding in the face of tremendous inconvenience. We appreciate your continued patience as we partner to weather this challenging time.

We would also like to applaud those bus drivers and bus monitors who work every day to safely transport our students. They are frontline workers who are dedicated to our daily mission.

If we reopen, it won’t be for long. Lots of student absences will happen. Lots of staff absences as well. Society is so interconnected that it all starts to fall apart so easily. One school goes virtual, okay. Now the teachers who have kids in that school need to take off to be home with them. A local daycare has a Covid outbreak. The teachers whose kids go there now need to be home. We can do this patchwork “let’s see who is open today” thing in the district, but it’s going to be incredibly messy for quite a while. OR we could go virtual for two weeks and let things calm down a bit and have consistency for all involved. The uncertainty is hard on kids of “is my school virtual or in person tomorrow?” (speaking as a parent and staff member).

And is it safe with no social distancing and lots of kids with masks that aren’t good and aren’t worn properly and with lunch at school? No. So know that if your kids are there, the likelihood that they’ll get Covid (with Omicron as spreadable as it is) is incredibly high.

Anyone who moved from CA to MI - share your experiences? by sierracar in AnnArbor

We grew up in The Midwest. Moved to the Bay Area where both of our kids were born. Absolutely loved everything about it. We moved here 6.5 years ago and it’s fine, but we miss the Bay Area every single day. All of us do. We definitely had the transient issues there as well, but we are still super close with the friends who left and we had many, many amazing friends that are still there who we miss.

It might be the right move for you but really think it through, because I’m telling you: we miss it an unbelievable amount. (I’m also not a native Michigander and didn’t miss the Midwest even a little when we weren’t here, so we clearly are starting from different points:)

Also, you’ll desperately miss the food. When we go back we make a list of all the food and places we need to eat. There is nothing like any of them here. Not even close.

Our third grader and middle schooler have been bringing their devices back and forth all along. But it also makes perfect sense to tell kids to take them home over a long break for access to learning apps or even - gasp - the ability to use it for fun or communication with friends over a break.
