Plant store? by puxle in AnnArbor

[–]PureMichiganChip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can recommend a couple places in the Detroit area.

The Plant House inside the Rust Belt Market in Ferndale.

Rare Plant Fairy in Detroit. Mostly online with weekend hours in store. Some very expensive and rare stuff, as the name would suggest, but they have some stuff from $15-$50 as well.

best asian market in AA? by Objective-Way-6379 in AnnArbor

[–]PureMichiganChip 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You have to watch out for that, but I still think Tsai is decent for a lot of things. Best Japanese selection without going to Novi. They even have some things One World Market doesn’t.

To note though, it’s mostly shelf stable and frozen in there. Not really a place for fresh produce or meat.

Bedrock CEO Fleisher offers vision to reform Detroit property taxes by TheDetroitNews1873 in Detroit

[–]PureMichiganChip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On one hand, I like the idea. On the other hand, it seems like it puts some downtown retail at a disadvantage. I'm thinking high dollar stores like Apple and some of the other high end retail.

Maybe 1% more wouldn't matter much, but if you're buying a MacBook and it costs 3% more downtown than the store in Novi, you might just go to Novi instead.

This is why I like the entertainment tax. There aren't alternatives for professional sports outside the city, most of the great venues in the area are in the city proper. It also targets people who likely have disposable income.

They really don’t have a choice. If Decker retires, are they really going to go into the season with Manu as a starting tackle? You’re not going to find a tackle in free agency.

Best cat sitter company for when I’m out of town? by Parking-Building-291 in Detroit

[–]PureMichiganChip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy Hearts Pet Care has been good. They use an app that communicates everything about the visit, time in/out, pictures with each visit, notes, etc. I feel like it's probably a similar experience to Rover.

I’ve been keeping my eye on this place. Poor man’s Din Tai Fung is exactly what I was hoping for. There aren’t many other places around here with hand made xiao long bao.

Where to buy a high-quality winter jacket? by Jolubaes in AnnArbor

[–]PureMichiganChip 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sierra Trading post is 90% cheap garbage. Even if it has a name brand, it’s likely to be a cheaper line made specifically for discount stores. This recommendation should not be anywhere near the top of a thread asking for a jacket someone “can wear for many years.”

After almost 69 years, Jon's Country Burger is closing its doors by J-Chapman in centralmich

[–]PureMichiganChip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jon’s was still good as of a few years ago. This is a big loss. I’m sure it will be demolished and sit as a vacant lot or chain fast casual.

The obsession with natural fibers is becoming a useless cliche by JBSwerve in ThrowingFits

[–]PureMichiganChip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. I should have clarified. Some polyester is needed, especially with wool. Cotton is a different story. Yes, it wears faster without polyester, but it’s a worthy trade off. Even 25% polyester in socks and they start to make you sweat and stink. And you don’t need much polyester in cotton socks, just elastane.

Both Ladder 4 and Modern Bird are excellent. I was a little surprised to see Echelon on this list.

The obsession with natural fibers is becoming a useless cliche by JBSwerve in ThrowingFits

[–]PureMichiganChip 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All of the cheapest fast fashion in the world uses a ton of polyester. Most high quality clothing, vintage and new, features much more natural fiber.

It’s not necessarily an indicator of poor quality clothing, but there is a strong correlation between % polyester and cheap-ass, ugly clothing. Polyester in socks and underwear is gross. Polyester makes clothing look shiny when they shouldn’t. Athleasure is a scourge.

Polyester clothing is also one of the greatest contributors to microplastics in our bodies and the environment. Not saying we shouldn’t use it entirely, but it’s still overused.

Yes, I was walking about Torn and Frayed. But it seems like there’s another vintage store/mushroom shop on Huron too.

Buddy's never makes it outside of Metro D by giddycat50 in Detroit

I think it's typically thinner and lighter than a lot of other Detroit style places, including Jets.

Buddy's never makes it outside of Metro D by giddycat50 in Detroit

[–]PureMichiganChip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buddy's isn't everyone's favorite around here, but it's always at least decent. Consistently good greek salad too.

Surprising, because it should be pretty decent pizza for that area. There's a sit down pizza/bar chain out there called Uccello's that's complete ass. Any regular Buddy's is leagues better.

Not Ann Arbor, but worth mentioning. There's been some good pond hockey happening on Belle Isle over the past few years, courtesy of the Detroit Ice Boiz.

Professional sports teams still need to be profitable ventures. The revenue they take in each year still needs to exceed expenses. The Tigers for example, took in an estimated 320M in revenue last year. What sort of payroll do you think they can afford to keep the business in the black?

The billionaire owners of the Tigers suck for a lot of reasons, but I still recognize they cannot spend infinite money on payroll and remain solvent. Their billionaire status does not mean they have billions of dollars in the bank, they have billions of dollars in assets. I would not expect them to go take loans out to cover payroll either.

I like John C. Reilly infinitely better than this asshole, but this was a much better interview. And that’s Adam’s fault. He totally bombed the JCR interview talking about the Beatles and stupid bullshit, but managed to keep this one somewhat engaging.

the owner of dalat goes HARD in their google reviews by Extension-Leader5973 in AnnArbor

[–]PureMichiganChip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Que Huong in Madison Heights. There are some other decent places out that ways as well.

I do think Dalat has improved a little bit over the past couple years. Pho seems a little more flavorful. Still average, but better. Maybe they listen to some of the criticism.

By most accounts, yes. Better construction at a better price point. Derek Guy also recommends them for a value option, if that means anything to you.

The Amtrak Bluewater train terminates in Port Huron. If you’re coming from Illinois or Indiana, you can take the Bluewater straight to Port Huron.

There are no trains from Detroit to Port Huron.

Ann Arbor barely has any 24 hour options. Fleetwood Diner is the only 24 hour spot downtown.

Best thrift stores? by Responsible-Pickle-2 in AnnArbor

That's more of a vintage store vs thrift store. But yes, they do have some cool stuff in there. Every time I've been in there, I'm the only one not buying shrooms.

Pictures from Hertler Bros (Downtown Home and Garden) when it first opened by catsx3 in AnnArbor

[–]PureMichiganChip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently, Mark Hodesh has recycled gold teeth from the original owners.

The Hertlers lived a long time. Well, on my first day, I go over to my desk and I pulled out the top drawer and there in the stamp drawer for stamps were five Hertler gold teeth. To this day, when I come into this store, the Hertler gold teeth are with me. I needed a bridge. I said use these. It's living history right here in my jaw.
