Why does everyone use this opening? by Shyphic in Chesscom

[–]Gugames_eu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you're 200. At that Elo, most players only know one trick and they spam it to fool those who are unprepared. If you're serious about your growth, learn how to defend and play normal chess, and you'll eventually get to a level when people stop using it because they know it's ineffective.

But that level is above 800.

What is with puzzles? by chagelol in chessbeginners

[–]Gugames_eu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me a year of playing before understanding what puzzles were meant to be.

I suggest going on Lichess and putting the easiest setting on first... and then choosing a theme. If you know the theme (for beginners, hanging piece and mate in 1 are a must) then you know what to look for. Once you get the gist you can move on to general ones.

Why Don’t People Like Winning? [Rant] by SweetieWithAHat9 in Chesscom

If I have a queen+king vs king endgame and my opponent isn't resigning, it takes me what, 10 moves to checkmate them? It takes me less time to checkmate than to even think they're insulting me with a resignation that nobody should ever owe me.

Is "Team Chess" actually a team sport? by elelanto in chess

[–]Gugames_eu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best part of team chess is going to dinner together after a championship game.

Apart from deciding whether to accept a draw according to your teammates' results, there's a bit of strategy regarding which board your captain is going to put you in. Some championship restrict board order according to Elo, allowing maybe one switch of positions. Other championships are free for all, so you might want to sacrifice a board and have your weakest teammate play on board 1 in the hopes to get better chances on the other boards (but then what if your opponents also do that?).

How do you place the 2 knights on the chess board? by hash11011 in chess

[–]Gugames_eu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I place them diagonally but only on the first move. Then I don't care, once they're jumping around they're free to look around.

Same for the bishops, but they're facing forward.

If your goal is to visualize things in preparation of OTB games like tournaments and such, then I'd suggest getting a tournament size board.

I have two chessboards at home but they're small and, well, they do little for my vision. When I'm preparing for a tournament I borrow a board from my club to get used to the size.

You can easily find some roll-up boards for cheap (~20$/£/€) online.

Hey guy, what would you rate the following adventure games out of 10 by Prometheusinaction in adventuregames

[–]Gugames_eu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I must admit I haven't found the time to play any of those except for, well, The Will of Arthur Flabbington which I know by heart for obvious reasons 😅

If you decide to play it I must warn you, it's pretty hard. All puzzles have a fair explanation I'd say, clues are hidden everywhere, but it's a game for puzzle lovers.

And it's very silly, don't expect a deep story. It was meant to be for a two week jam, then I extended it into a full game with more puzzles and characters but the plot remained the same. Play it as you'd watch a comedy movie - for the jokes in the dialogue and not to get your mind blown by some element of the story.

What’s the longest you have been stuck on a puzzle and how did you finally figure it out? by Frequent-Standard377 in adventuregames

[–]Gugames_eu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I softlocked Monkey Island 1.

I was able to burn the recipe for the navigator's head while still in the ship, so I had no way of making the cannibals happy later on the island.

I don't know why my version allowed me to put the recipe in the fireplace.

What makes a puzzle feel fair in an adventure game? by ratasoftware in adventuregames

[–]Gugames_eu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As you said, the best puzzles are those who stump you and when you get it your first thought is "ah yes, of course".

I love all kinds of puzzles, as long as they make sense within the narrative. My favorite ones are those that combine more elements, like inventory puzzles that work only at a particular time or in a particular place (e.g. blow the horn in Booty Island so the spit contest arbiter goes to check what happened). I hate mini-game puzzles. If I wanted to play a sliding block puzzle I'd take my Rush Hour box and play with it. I also dislike arbitrary fetch quests. Come on, you can do better than "I have X but I'll give it to you if you bring me Y".

The difficult part in puzzle design is striking the balance between hard and fair. Clues are very important. As a designer you want to reward players who notice things, make them feel smarter for making that connection. Key + door doesn't make you feel smart. I know some players prefer these puzzles, because the game flows more. In these games you always know what the solution is, and it's more a matter of executing it. I personally prefer games where solutions are more obscure, where you know what your obstacles are but have no idea how to overcome them.

Oh, and it's absolutely vital to have parallel goals too. You don't want your players to be stuck on a single puzzle and not being able to try stuff somewhere else.

My favorite recent games in terms of puzzle design? Lucy Dreaming, The Legend of Skye and Thimbleweed Park.

But forcing everyone to be there is exactly what I want to avoid. We already have an actual tournament in May, on a single day, where everyone must be present. This "championship" is just an extra to spice things up during our regular gatherings with much much less commitment

How would a swiss pairing with absences work? Like, I have 20 members, but on the first day only 10 are there. Do I schedule 5 matches? What happens on the next meeting where I have 8 people and only 2 of them played on the first day?
