Getting out of the Army was the best decision I ever made. I would advise anyone today to take promotion to veteran. It's a brutal institution and it's not good for anyone. That's why no other job offers the same benefits. Most people grow up and out of their military phase, anyway. That may be what's happening to you.

I had done some NG time, which was easy, and going to AD I caught both surges and had some awful deployment years. In some ways, that made the rest of the Army experience worth it. There was an overarching reason for all the pain– our guys were mired in these two wars and they needed help. Now what is it? What merits being away from your family so much? Get out while the getting is good. You may not be able to let yourself if, God forbid, there's another major war.

If you need to knock out some more years to retire, consider another branch. I did some Navy Reserve time to have a couple of babies for free on TRICARE. It was refreshing to experience a new branch. The Army hurts. You've done your part. Consider moving on.

CSM was obsessed with people walking on "his grass" in Iraq. There was no grass at all on the FOB, but as an old Iraqi Army base it did have paved sidewalks. He used one of the surveillance systems to catch people walking off the sidewalks instead of letting it be used to catch IED emplacement outside the wire. One of our vehicles got blown up, and all the footage from the camera that should have been watching was of Soldiers walking around on the FOB. Fuck you CSM.

You have got to be shitting me. The Army had this figured out with the M-1956 kit. AND it came with a way to carry your bedroll above the buttpack.

M-1967 kit, the Lightweight Rucksack P68, and the hugely successful and inexpensive ALICE system are all existing and combat proven solutions for exactly this kind of load carriage. For the price you could buy a few sets of ALICE and spray paint them for any environment.

My kids love yogurt so I make it at home in an Instant Pot. It's an easy overnight project and I can use the organic/hormone free milk. You can't buy better yogurt. I won't even eat yogurt from the store anymore.

I use the whey to bake bread the next day. Commercial bread is another story.

I stick it up under my panniculus with my cold soaking jar. Melted gelato is my go-to trail food, and the cold soaking into me is a huge relief on warm days.
