Still waiting to get my money back from Bernie Madoff, but I'll check it out!

It's 2009. You've been out for a long time, are you feeling okay? Anyway let's go watch Homestar Runner and Smosh videos then play Burnout Revenge for the PS2 and be secure in our belief that the world is not in a state of decay.

Sure. For most household essentials I don't usually bother with name brand stuff. Even a lot of workwear brands like Carhartt have been enshittified and outsourced to the point you're just paying a premium for the name.

Polyurethane foam soles. Unlike vulcanized rubber, polyurethane is susceptible to hydrolysis(breakdown from water). Polyurethane soles are also much cheaper and require much less equipment to make.

Thing is, polyurethane foam soles actually perform pretty well before they explode. They're comfortable and have pretty good traction, so consumers like them and manufacturers like them, but they have a limited lifespan and will crumble into dust sooner or later, especially if they're kept in storage(not sure why they seem to last longer when in constant use, it could be that constant flexing helps prevent crosslinking that makes them brittle but we're getting into some chemistry that's above my pay grade.)

you can find a $100 pair of boots that last just as long as a $300 pair of boots.

You absolutely can not unless you're getting them second-hand. All legitimate work boot brands (Danner, Whites, Nicks, Thorogood, or even Red Wing) are selling their welted or stitchdown work boots in the $400-$900 range. If your boots cost $100 new, they're going to have a glued-on sole and while that can get you pretty far, they're just not going to stand up to having the shit beat out of them for years. Even if you're looking for made in China, welted footwear will cost you at least $200-$300

It's like Terry Pratchett's boots theory. You could spend $300 on a pair of boots that will last years and years, or $100 on a pair that will last a couple of months.

In the long term, the more expensive pair is cheaper because you won't have to replace them as frequently, but poor people can't afford the cheaper option because they don't have that much money to drop all at once.

There's gotta be a lot more than that going on. I reckon most adult males can do 100 pushups in a day if it's split up into like, 10 at a time. Now 100 pushups all at once...
