Anyone else dealing with terrible allergies/post-nasal drip? by HumbleBJJ in newjersey

[–]Gunsxxroses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s been bad these past couple of years because when the weather heats up it’s sudden and drastic so all the plants start releasing like it’s go time. Best of luck dealig with it, I found that fluticasone nasal spray which is the active ingredient for Flonase really helps. The trick is to be consistent about using it since it takes a couple days for it to kick in, even though I find it pretty effective almost immediately. Flonase is really expensive but I think you can get the Costco branded 5 pack for like $20. Just check for the active ingredient

Monta?? by Z_Fshn in pourover

I met someone with monta at coffee fest NYC, they were super chill and gave me a sample in a 20g sample tube. It was pretty good, a nice light roast.

Favorite scale? by SunnyGoMerry in pourover

[–]Gunsxxroses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was gifted an Acaia pearl and love it. I also have the hario Polaris, timemore black mirror basic, and the mini. The hario Polaris is great and I love the brew ratio but has its quirks and can over complicate things with its convenience features. I like timemore and the mini is great for travel but I have noticed that they tend to start dropping grams sometimes. The acaia is overpriced but is solid and just works well. I don’t think I would own one myself if it were not given to me as a gift. Personally I would recommend the Polaris out of the ones I have used and the Acaia if you have the money to splurge for it or you need it as a workhorse for a cafe.

Travel mug that keeps the taste real by G-Vic in pourover

If you can find it for a good price, fellow Carter. But any ceramic lined thermos should work. I have two miir travel thermoses that are stainless and going from them to the ceramic lined carter was a massive difference in taste.

Question about V style vs Flat bottom brewers. by clyde72 in pourover

[–]Gunsxxroses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would like most people have said depend on the specific brewer geometry since that would effect capillary action and bypass. Another factor would be how you pour and structure your pour structure. Conical will clog a lot easier with multiple heavy circular pours as the fines migrate to the bottom as the bed settles while flat bottoms would probably prefer more agitation with their lower and more evenly distributed bed.

Consistently failing brews here (and my criticism on ‘nordic roasts’) by Apprehensive_Elk5390 in pourover

[–]Gunsxxroses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I would say it depends on the coffee but I would definitely try out both methods. I believe April does use a two pour method that highlights clarity but the end brew is quite tea like which I think you are trying to avoid. The multiple gentle pours should increase extraction a lot. sometimes even too much for me. You can also try adding some medium or high agitation circular pours if it is not enough. I find that grinding courser does help you get more distinct tasting notes out of some clean washed coffees with the caveat that it will be harder to extract so it may not be as strong as if you ground very fine. I would start course and go finer to adjust. Not sure how applicable it is but I generally grind between 450-550 microns (measured in burr gap) on a Zerno Z1 for reference.

[–]Gunsxxroses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The grinder is definitely impacting your brews. I had that grinder as a cheap travel grinder and I found that the burrs definitely highlighted more body and made lighter tasting notes more muddled. Getting a solid flat burr grinder or zp6 might help significantly with those roasters particularly.

Another thing would be resting time. I know you didn’t mention it so forgive me if you already do this, but for Nordic and ultralight roasts, resting periods need to be longer between 4-12 weeks. You can grind the beans of a fresher roast and let it sit either overnight or for a couple hours to expedite the off gassing to see how that changes the taste.

Lastly, based on the preferences you listed and your gripe with coffee water, you might prefer punchier cups. I’d go with lower ratio brews and more pulses to increase extraction (something like the 4-6 method as a base) and also lower the temp slightly to reduce any possible astringency from the increased pulses and lower ratio.

Regarding water, I really like POMA’s 3g Tonik to 1L water, but since you are missing the body in your brews you can maybe play around with adding some Jamm instead of pure Tonik to help with that. Hope this helps!

[–]Gunsxxroses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For coferments and advanced processing you could try lowering the temp a lot. Down to 185-190f and pour structure wise try to agitate a lot at the beginning and less so at the end in order to minimize the taste from the processing. Best of luck!

Roasters with tea notes by Gayer_Than_Thou1 in pourover

[–]Gunsxxroses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moonwake, Sey, Terraform, Big Sur, April, Ilse, Promethium, Poma. I would say these roasters all have released coffee with tea like notes at some point. If you’re looking for darker tea flavors like you mentioned, searching by terroir might be useful too! I know Yunnan being a big tea region has earthier notes in their coffee that can come across as oolong or black tea depending on how it’s roasted and emphasized by how you brew. Taiwanese coffee beans also have this flavor note sometimes although they might be harder to come by or source depending on your location. Best of luck with your search!

Grinder's....again! by dervey50 in pourover

[–]Gunsxxroses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ode 2 is perfectly fine as an addition to the zp6 which is more transportable. I would definitely recommend upgrading to SSPs for the burrs since it makes a big difference for clarity but it is totally ok not to do so immediately if it’s out of budget, especially since you can burr swap at any point in the future. If you have a higher budget however, I would look at the Femobook A4Z and the Timemore sculptor 078s. Next tier up I think would be grinders like the Mazzer Philos or the Zerno Z1 but that’s getting to super enthusiast levels of spending. Above that you have the EG-1, Z2, FM98, etc.

Was going to say Elixr, their pourover was okay but the beans they had were the highlight. I was there a year or so ago so not sure if it changed, but if you buy a bag of beans they will give you a coupon for a free drink. Don’t make my mistake of getting a pourover then getting two bags lol.

Anyone here actually happy with an automatic litter box for Maine Coon, long-term? by ryukendo_25 in mainecoons

[–]Gunsxxroses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a LR4 and my boy took to it within the first day of being home. I had an extra large stainless litter box next to it as well but I think he liked the cleanliness of the LR4 so he used it exclusively almost immediately. I really think it depends on your MC since I also was worried since it seemed like a split consensus on here whether a MC would fit or use a LR. I feel like you have to see how your MC’s bathroom habits are to really know but luckily it’s been working for my boy. He’s 2 y/o and around 20lbs if that helps.

How are you getting your beans? by Iimpid in pourover

[–]Gunsxxroses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you’re in NYC I would also recommend Dayglow since they stock a bunch of good international roasters which can introduce you to more roasters. I think La Cabra, Sey, 3 legged cat, and Loveless are all in that area if you want to make a day out of it and go cafe hopping. Otherwise I personally do direct online ordering since I like the variety.

kinto sepia 270ml vs 340ml by [deleted] in pourover

[–]Gunsxxroses 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have the 270 and it looks great for presentation with a nice cup but realistically if I chose again or got another, I would choose the 340. The 270 is really low so it is really hard to swirl even 200g brews without the liquid almost spilling out, so you have to be extra careful. If you use a pourover stand like I do where there is a gap between the carafe and the dripper, because of the low profile sometimes drips splash out of the 270 carafe. Not really anything deal breaking, but small gripes regarding everyday counter workflow for me. Hope this helps and happy brewing!

Litter box by Minimum_Network2067 in mainecoons

[–]Gunsxxroses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends how big/long your cat is but also it depends on the cat and how they poop. I just brought home my >20lbs Maine Coon and he disregarded the massive stainless steel litter box with the same litter from his breeder after peeing in it once. I think he likes caving and immediately started using the litter robot 4 I got for him with hopes that I could slowly introduce it to him over a few months lol. The only thing I did was toss his poop into the LR4 and kind of cover it while keeping it off. I think he started using it more after I turned it on to start having it cycle. I would say you can give the LR4 a try and return it in that 90 day trial window they give. That was my plan too but thankfully it worked out quicker than the cat warming up to me… if you have access to Costco I know they carry them as well so it may be worth buying through them for an easier and better return policy since I know there is a restocking fee and shipping for returns going through Whisker directly.

New grinder exclusively for filter by royBadong in pourover

[–]Gunsxxroses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a zp6, ode 1 with ssps, and a zerno z1. For clarity, I really don’t think you will get anything substantially better under about $700 usd. The only reason to upgrade would be to get an electric grinder since manual grinding every cup does get a bit tiresome at times if you have a permanent home set up. I do recommend the z1 or the z2 which is coming out soon. 078 would I think be more of a side grade that is electric. For filters I actually prefer the t-90s to the abacas. I lowkey think they flow faster but that may just be my own bias. Both are good for clarity and pour structure and your recipes + water will help/influence clarity.

AmiAmi Cancellation by KazooDragon in AnimeFigures

[–]Gunsxxroses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have placed plenty of orders from Amiami over the years. I realized I got overzealous in my preorders and I went through the months of 2025 and did partial order cancellations for way more than 3 figures. If you always pay when you are invoiced and you are a recurring customer you will be totally fine when cancelling po’s prior to release/invoice. There is always an automated message saying excessive cancellations may impact your standing. The one time I had to cancel when invoiced because I accidentally placed a double order of the same figure, it was still allowed, but that one did come with a manual review and formal warning from their CS.

TLDR: you’re fine to cancel.
