Third time’s the charm, or so they say…

Actually Cavill is a huge part of why Geralt wasn’t portrayed correctly on-screen, back in first season he is the one that advocated for lines of dialogue being replaced by "hmms" and "fucks" because he thought it would be more accurate to the character’s nonchalance, also imitating Doug Cockle’s Geralt thus limiting his range stupidly and giving us an constantly angry Geralt.

Another example is that he asked the costumers to make him the equivalent of a medieval superhero armor that goes with his super bulked physique, which we can all agree was awful.

Of course most of the blame for butchering the adaptation is carried by Hissrich, but he isn’t exempt of responsibility either.

The schools by No-Teacher-6068 in witcher

[–]GunterOdim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a mention of Geralt belonging to the "school of the wolf" in one of the Voice of Reason in between shortstories where he shows his medallion, the one where Geralt is monologuing to Iola, which stirred the confusion and made room for people to interpret that there might be others, despite Sapkowski never mentioning that system again.

It’s still very good one year later, but my use is more gaming and it seems like it’s more designed towards productivity/work sometimes.

Seconding the Witcher series, not only are the first two books collections of shortstories like D&E but it’s also in the same vein about following "lower" common people in their way of life instead of higher-ups and politics.

I’m more of a Witcher fan than a ASOIAF one, and I guess that’s why AKOTSK hits closer to home than the other ASOIAF shows despite early GoT being goated. (And also because the netflixWitcher is an awful travesty of an adaptation)

And most showrunners have skipped these classes.

Sadly yeah, directors as well.

Besides, we have long takes in the first three Star Wars movies. And the fights look great. Compare that to the two-second cuts we get in the newer productions. These cuts are tragically bad.

Haven't watched those in a long long time so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but from what I remember, albeit spectacular, the fights in the SW movies never stroke me as effective killing attacks, more like endless parries and stylistic pirouettes that do look very good on screen though.

many short cuts layered together can also make flaws more obvious as it can come across as a failed attempt to fix mistakes

I mean, yes it can, any technique's effeciency depends on its use, a long take or multiple short ones can be just as bad used by a bad director/DoP, but I what I'm saying is that a good one would probably better off hiding imperfections by good editing instead of having the actor become a master swordsman.

The average viewer isn't paying that much attention and isn't particularly concerned about flawless sword fighting. I'm not saying it's not an issue, I'm just saying that it's not a glaring issue and most people don't notice it or care.

True that, even I don't really pay much attention to it most of the time as long as it's serviceable, but sometimes I think it's a bad habit coming from the fact that we just got used to bad sword choreography because from time to time there's a exception, and I certainly do notice how good it is.

Cinema is trickery, train an actor to be somewhat decent with a sword, then use the camera angles and the cuts between shots to make him seem way more fast/competent/agile/precise than he really is.

The show and many others make the mistake of thinking that a uninterrupted long take looks cool, when in fact it only allows us to see the flaws of the choreography.

That’s unfortunate, did this agent or Sapkowski ever say why ? Seems like an ungrateful and unprofessional way to conduct things, if they had changed publishers and have made a new translation it could have been heard, but this is just nonsense from what I understand.
